Introduction: Egyptian Blogs between Fiction and Autobiography

This chapter presents the main topic of the study and the theoretical and methodological framework used in the book. First, it argues that, so far, the debate concerning blogs has tended to consider them as forms of diary, i.e. non-fiction while few scholars have looked at blogs as a new literary genre. In the Arab world, blogs have mainly been studied as tools for political activism, while some attention has been given to blogs turned into books. Therefore, the theory of ‘autofiction’ is introduced as a possible interpretative framework to understand the literary features of some blogs. Focusing on Arabic literature, the chapter shows that that although the term ‘autofiction’ was coined in France in 1970s, the practice of fictionalizing the self has a long tradition in Arabic literature. Finally, since Internet literature is a relatively new field of research, the chapter briefly illustrates the methodology and challenges adopted in this study, and in particular: the selection of primary sources; the benefits of combining close reading with interviews, and the researcher’s ethical stances concerning Internet material and interviews in time of a popular revolution and military censorship.

The article provides an account of the Author's participation in the 16th Sharjah conference on contemporary Arabic literature (Amman / Jordan, September 2019). It comprises information about the institutions and people who organized this meeting, as well as an outline of the academic problems regarded as its main topic: the specific features of Arabic novel delivered in the electronic form. The author, Professor D. Mikulsky also offers a brief report on his personal conversations with Arab writers and scholars of literature, as well as with people of Amman whom he met during his stay in the Capital of Jordan. These conversations were chiefly about these people's attitude towards Russia and its culture, and also about the academic and popular perception of the classical Arabic literary and cultural legacy of the Arabs and family and clannish roots of the Author's informants. The article, written in an elegant style offers a vivid picture of the present-day sociocultural situation in the Arab world, where the most recent cultural phenomena are amalgamated with traditional institutions. 


This book is devoted to the life and academic legacy of Mustafa Badawi who transformed the study of modern Arabic literature in the second half of the twentieth century. Prior to the 1960s the study of Arabic literature, both classical and modern, had barely been emancipated from the academic approaches of orientalism. The appointment of Badawi as Oxford University's first lecturer in modern Arabic literature changed the face of this subject as Badawi showed, through his teaching and research, that Arabic literature was making vibrant contributions to global culture and thought. Part biography, part collection of critical essays, this book celebrates Badawi's immense contribution to the field and explores his role as a public intellectual in the Arab world and the west.

Two studies were conducted to investigate gender differences in a sample of young South African readers from poor communities. In the first study, the self-reported reading preferences of 2 775 readers on a mobile phone platform supplied by the FunDza Literacy Trust were surveyed. Both male and female readers indicated that they liked four genres in particular: romance, drama, non- fiction, and stories with specific South African content. There were nevertheless some differences, such as that a higher percentage of males liked stories involving sport. The second study examined the unique FunDza site visits made by readers, as a proxy measure of what they actually were reading. Four genres stood out: romance, drama, biography, and action/adventure. Again the similarity between male and female readers was noticeable, although many more females than males read content on the site.

The notion of leadership competencies is a much-debated issue. In this article, we propose that how the leader makes sense of his or her competencies is key to leadership practice. Specifically, we look at how leaders reconcile discrepancies between the self-perceived proficiency of various competencies and their corresponding importance. Empirically, we study leaders within the music domain – how choral conductors make sense of their competencies in the shaping of their professional practice. We investigated how choral leaders in Scandinavia ( N = 638) made sense of their competencies in the face of demands in their working situations. A mixed methodology was used, comprising a quantitative survey with qualitative comments and in-depth interviews with a selection of the respondents. The results show that when choral leaders shape their practice, they frequently face competency gaps that compel them to act or adjust their identity. The key to this sensemaking process is how they move competency elements they master to the foreground and wanting elements to the background. The concept of ‘sensemaking affordance’ is introduced to account for how various leader competency categories are negotiated to safeguard overall efficacy.

The amount of ink spilled in consideration of the life, thought, accomplishments, and legacy of Christopher Columbus Langdell is eloquent testimony to the critical role he plays in the self-image of the American law teaching profession. It is both wonderful and astounding, therefore, to find that critical primary sources remained unread and unused at the very end of the twentieth century. Now that Bruce Kimball has brought them to light, we have a more complete view of the man and his thought, one that, not surprisingly, reveals to us someone quite different from the cruelly and crudely caricatured inventor of those twin devices for stifling young minds, the case and Socratic methods.

The article focuses on the selected examples of the blurring of a book’s genre status by means of specifi c editorial solutions, such as the use of a spatial layout of the text, the differentiation of fonts, the selection of printing paper, the cover design etc. This mechanism is discussed on the example of six experimental works of contemporary Polish non-fi ction literature. Books by Filip Springer and Jarosław Mikołajewski, bordering upon literary reportage, show how the use of typography enhances the formal hybridity or even amorphousness of the text. In turn, Mariusz Szczygieł and Wojciech Tochman, their documentary narratives, emphasize the mutual synergy between the physical components of the book, which undermines the standard genre classifi cation.

Zaynab, first published in 1913, is widely cited as the first Arabic novel, yet the previous eight decades saw hundreds of novels translated into Arabic from English and French. This vast literary corpus influenced generations of Arab writers but has, until now, been considered a curious footnote in the genre's history. Incorporating these works into the history of the Arabic novel, this book offers a transformative new account of modern Arabic literature, world literature, and the novel. This book rewrites the history of the global circulation of the novel by moving Arabic literature from the margins of comparative literature to its center. Considering the wide range of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century translation practices, the book argues that Arabic translators did far more than copy European works; they authored new versions of them, producing sophisticated theorizations of the genre. These translations and the reading practices they precipitated form the conceptual and practical foundations of Arab literary modernity, necessitating an overhaul of our notions of translation, cultural exchange, and the global. The book shows how translators theorized the Arab world not as Europe's periphery but as an alternative center in a globalized network. It affirms the central place of (mis)translation in both the history of the novel in Arabic and the novel as a transnational form itself.
