“We Can Change the Whole Narrative”: Crafting Play and Nostalgia in Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep and Mood Indigo

This chapter by Danica van de Welde focuses on a “craft aesthetic” of Gondry’s surrealist visual aesthetic. This craft aesthetic features handmade objects as a tool to construct a space of magical realism that complicates boundaries between dreams, nostalgia, fantasy, and real life in The Science of Sleep and Mood Indigo. The Science of Sleep is about the romance between dreamer Stéphane and his neighbor Stéphanie, while Mood Indigo, a surreal romantic tragedy in which a man tries to save his beloved from dying of a flower growing in her lung, is Gondry’s cinematic adaptation of French author Boris Vian’s novel L’Écume des jours (1947). This chapter considers how although craft is often treated as lowly within fine arts frameworks, in these two films, craft and handmade objects take on new value as vehicles of nostalgia and romance.

This article uses concepts of magical realism by Wendy B. Faris to analyze Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. We analyze elements of magical realism of the work in mapping discourses between the text and the real life. The chosen material object that published earlier than the theory we chose make this work contributes to describe the trace of the civilization development; event of in-betweeness of human consciousness. However, we have found that A Midsummer Night’s Dream is only a magical realism-like mode, since realism is dominant in the text as the trace of modernity. Meanwhile, the characteristics of Magical Realism that is postulated by Faris is in-between realism and fantasy as a trace of transition era; modern to postmodern. Abstrak: Artikel ini menggunakan konsep-konsep realism magis oleh Wendy B. Faris untuk menganalisis “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” karya Shakespeare.  Kami menganalisis elemen-elemen realism magis yang ada dalam karya untuk memetakan wacana-wacana yang ada antara teks dan kenyataan. Pemilihan objek materi yang telah dipublikasi lebih awal dari kelahiran teori yangkami pilih ini berkontribusi untuk menjelaskan jejak perkembanan peradaban Kebudayaan; peristiwa keberantaraan pada kesadaran manusia. Namun demikian, kami menemukan bahwa “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” hanyalah moda tulisan Serupa Realisme Magis, karena dominan teks lebih pada realisme yang merupakan jejak dari modernitas. Sementara syarat realism magis yang ditawarkan Faris adalah keberantaraan realisme dan fantasi sebagai jejak era transisi modern menuju postmodern.

<em>This article aims to read visual signs and verbal signs by utilizing the children's drawings during the pre-schematic stage. The reading of the signs will be used to describe the elements of fine arts in the children's drawing.  Four works of kindergarten children were chosen and observed. The four works are entitled "Mother", "Brother", "Zoo" and "Tree". These have been selected as the subjects of the study. These four works were chosen because these works were created by using different media, such as pencil on paper, watercolors on paper, and digital media. The object of this study is focused on visual analysis of the children's drawings on the elements of art, such as points, lines, shape, spaces, and colors. The pre-schematic stage is characterized by the appearance of circular images with lines that seem to indicate human or animal figures. During this stage, the scheme (the visual idea) is developed. The drawing shows what the child considers most important about the subject. There is a little understanding of space - objects are placed randomly throughout the image. The use of color is more emotional than logical. The elements of fine art are shown in the drawings can be described as the result of the observation 1) The lines have been controlled so has formed the image. 2) The shape of the object described has been identified as representing the object that the child wants to describe. 3) The colors used to fill the shapes are based on the child's imagination and desires except the color used to fill the shape of the tree.  The colors of nature are the same as in real life, such as green leaves, blue sky, and green grass. In general, the image or drawing presented by the child is an illustration</em>

Microbial communities drive diverse processes that impact nearly everything on this planet, from global biogeochemical cycles to human health. Harnessing the power of these microorganisms could provide solutions to many of the challenges that face society. However, naturally occurring microbial communities are not optimized for anthropogenic use. An emerging area of research is focusing on engineering synthetic microbial communities to carry out predefined functions. Microbial community engineers are applying design principles like top-down and bottom-up approaches to create synthetic microbial communities having a myriad of real-life applications in health care, disease prevention, and environmental remediation. Multiple genetic engineering tools and delivery approaches can be used to ‘knock-in' new gene functions into microbial communities. A systematic study of the microbial interactions, community assembling principles, and engineering tools are necessary for us to understand the microbial community and to better utilize them. Continued analysis and effort are required to further the current and potential applications of synthetic microbial communities.

Abstract The speech-language pathologist (SLP) working in the public schools has a wide variety of tasks. Educational preparation is not all that is needed to be an effective school-based SLP. As a SLP currently working in the capacity of a program coordinator, the author describes the skills required to fulfill the job requirements and responsibilities of the SLP in the school setting and advises the new graduate regarding the interview process and beginning a career in the public schools.

Current ambulatory technologies are highly relevant for neuropsychological assessment and treatment as they provide a gateway to real life data. Ambulatory assessment of cognitive complaints, skills and emotional states in natural contexts provides information that has a greater ecological validity than traditional assessment approaches. This issue presents an overview of current technological and methodological innovations, opportunities, problems and limitations of these methods designed for the context-sensitive measurement of cognitive, emotional and behavioral function. The usefulness of selected ambulatory approaches is demonstrated and their relevance for an ecologically valid neuropsychology is highlighted.
