The paper discuses views on Bosnian language in Mehmed-beg Kapetanovic’s brochures. In literature, these brochures are determined differently by genre, primarily with its historical and literal, as well as political and social significance. Today we look at them as a testimony of one’s period breaking point in which shift between two states and its cultural-civilization forms had occurred, which has been reflected in a special way in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving the far reaching consequences on Bosniak’s overall social and cultural life. Within these brochures, Ljubušak talks about all current issues of that time, including the language name, which was one of the major challenges that faced new Austro-Hungarian administration in Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the other hand, other topics about which Ljubušak writes in these brochures will not be neglected, since some of them are actual in today’s historic moment.

This study explores the use of keywords in proverbs in Korean, English, Chinese, and Indonesian. The study applies the traditional corpus linguistic tools of frequency and ranking to the keywords found in proverbs in an attempt to characterize the proverbs of these languages. The frequency data show that English proverbs are dominated by abstract keywords like “love, God, age, foolishness, wisdom, poverty, good, evil, and truth.” On the other hand, Chinese proverbs are dominated by more “action oriented” and “pragmatic concern” keywords such as “heart, time, talk/say, act/do, words, method, and knowledge,” showing a clear divergence from the frequency structure of English proverb keywords. Surprisingly, Korean proverb keywords, just like the English keywords, are also found to share very little in common with Chinese, a longstanding neighbor which has strongly influenced the cultural life of Korea over the last two millennia. Instead, the data show that the proverb keyword structure most resembles that of Indonesian, both having material/physical terms dominating the keywords and both sharing three common top-ranking keywords: water, dog, and cow.

Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia-Herzegovina by the end of the 19th century, presided by Benjamin Kallay, the Empire’s Minister of Finance and governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina, strived to gain wider international justification for its years’ long project of “civilizing” Bosnia and Herzegovina, or particular “historizing” of this proximal colony. In the summer of 1894 the Austro-Hungarian government in Bosnia and Herzegovina organized the Congress of Archaeologists and Anthropologists in the Landesmuseum in Sarajevo. The aim of the Congress was to inform archaeologists and anthropologists about the results of archaeological investigations in the country, and to seek their advice in directing further work. The wider ideological, political, as well as theoretical context of this congress, however, was much more complex and layered, with the aim to present the constructed image of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a country of tamed and civilized European Orient of rich past and luxurious folklore. The participants of the Congress discussed the archaeological and anthropological data presented to them by the hosts, including the specially organized excavations at Butmir and Glasinac. It is interesting to analyze, from the point of view of the history of archaeological ideas, the endeavours of the participants to adapt the archaeological finds before them to the wishes of the hosts, and, on the other hand, to their favoured archaeological paradigms dominant at the time.

Developing the strategies for conserving and rendering the social experience, and hence the basis of group identity, was unchangeable corner stone for social outlook at all stages of social development. In the meantime, it is acquiring a special significance in recent years, primarily because the globalization substantially undermines the basics of national identity, thereby causing an increase of public attention to the problems of the collective, and above all, ethnocultural identity, the mechanisms of its reproduction and legitimation. These problems are especially topical for modern Ukrainian society, which, on the one hand, is the fruit of a civilizational split and, on the other hand, of the internal and external political elites manipulative policy and low living standards. To preserve its political boundaries, the society requires not only economic stability, but also new, more effective mechanisms and strategies for social consolidation. The latter, as shown by A. Bayburin and P. Conner, can effectively be provided by thoroughly developed or historically formed spectrum of typical behavior programs that regulate all spheres of human life in society, thus forming some socially significant norms. In other words, according to the above-mentioned researchers, it is stereotypical behavior that guarantees a community existence in time as some distinct ethnographic group.Оne of the most prominent examples of stereotyped behavior is ritual practice. Possessing the established set of behavior patterns, it is able to maintain the community’s accomplished image even when its proper values lose their social significance, but continue to exist as a habit. Thus, this work highlights the role of traditional ritual practice in the process of forming the modern Ukrainian identity. In particular, the idea is defended that ritual practice is not only an inseparable element of people’s collective memory, but also the means of forming the group identity, which is perfectly confirmed by Ukrainian family ritual practice’s pecularities. It is revealed that the timeless and expressive character of ceremonial actions has a decisive importance for preserving the group identity and the established social order. Despite of the irrecurring nature, which provides the connection to the past, it always means the beginning and the end at the same time. An illustrative example in this context may be wedding, maternity and economic ceremonies. All of them are permanent and repetitive transitions from one state to another. At the same time, ritual practice gives the sense to the whole spectrum of non-ritual actions, thus defining the future’s perspective. In general, the work considers ritual practice as a specific kind of the social one. It is characterized by the set of formalized and stylized symbolic actions of the community, usually aimed at preserving the established social or by means of forming certain ideas and feelings in a person. In the course of research work, it was emphasized that the formalized, stylized and, most importantly, the repeatable nature of the ritual practice, which manifests itself through commemoration of certain historical events, memorable days or heroes, ensures its clear intention to perpetuate the connection with the past. Thus, it plays an important role in the process of preserving the collective memory. On the other hand, the formation of the community’s value system is taking place, thus contributing to the preservation of its unity.Considering the consolidating significance of the ritual practice in terms of blurring the Ukrainian cultural identity, the studying and popularization of ritual practices seems to be important and promising, which would be accompanied by commemoration of their symbolic part. Such an activity could become a significant factor in the revival of the ethno-cultural identity of the Ukrainians and promote social consolidation

The basic presumption of establishing a valid system of protection and management of documents at registry offices and archives is professional and trained archival staff. This assumption is particularly important in Bosnian archives, since they all operate with significantly reduced personnel capacities. On the other hand, Bosnian archival service is, compared to countries in the region, most affected by the transition process, in which the archival service should act urgently, professionally and responsibly, in order to fulfil the basic function of protection of archives. In such circumstances, only trained personnel can be a guarantee of timely and adequate professional work on the challenges facing the archival service of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this paper, the author attempts through the experience of the Archives of Tuzla Canton to point out the importance of professional, educated staff in order to achieve the higher quality and better results in all fields of archives: of professional archival work to scientific research, publishing, cultural and educational activities.

The research material included about 300 episodes from 30 published sources. A targeted selection was made according to a combination of three criteria: a diversity of social positions among the authors, the biographies of the authors, and the detail of description. An analysis of the material was conducted in order to contribute to a better understanding of the social significance of hospitality. Theoretical assumptions about hospitality in conditions of stability and social crisis were advanced. The analysis showed that in times of relative stability, hospitality was biographically important when it allowed a person to transition between positions in the social structure (usually between close levels) and involved some form of promotion. On the other hand, in conditions of intensified change and crises, the order was disturbed: on the one hand, visits to the homes of persons occupying more distant positions in the hierarchy (both up and down the social ladder) became more common, but on the other hand, there could be a challenge to or rejection of traditional requirements of hospitality. The first situation occurs especially at the beginning of a crisis, and with the depletion of resources, the increase in the number of negative experiences, and socialization to a long-term threat, a survival strategy begins to take shape in which only the closest circles prevail. Such findings suggest that a more cautious look should be taken at both the theoretical concepts in which hospitality is considered a useful social invention especially in times of increased need and at the Polish self-stereotype as a nation with a culture based on hospitality, invariable generosity, and an inclination to selflessness.

This paper introduces key concepts of a preliminary project concerning houses of culture in former Czechoslovakia. Houses of culture used to be perceived as one of the signs, as well as a platform of establishing power during the communist era. The project will concentrate on various aspects of planning, building and managing houses of culture. In our research project we apply the “history from below” approach while viewing these Houses as a kind of “les Lieux de Mémoire” (places of memory). The chosen approach will require one to find historical witnesses and conduct a series of interviews with them in order to find out how houses of culture shaped their life during the communist era and, on the other hand, how people shaped the cultural life of these institutions.

The paper deals with the problem which the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina face with regard to foreign combatants who participated in the BH civil war between 1992 and 1995. Many of them stayed in the country after the war, and authorities intend to deport some of them, who represent a threat to national security. One of them is Imad Al Husin, whose case best reflects the abovementioned problem. Since he has a citizenship of Syria, which cannot be considered a safe country regarding the non-refoulement rule, process of deportation is facing difficulties. On the other hand, given the fact that he represents a threat to national security, he has been detained in an immigration centre for years. Since the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot find a third safe country, the question arises on the lawfulness of the duration of his detention in the immigration centre. In that context, we analyzed the decision of the European Court of Human Rights and decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding Imad Al Husin.

In this article the authors question how the EU’s enlistment of the post-Yugoslav states into the EU’s border regime has exacerbated local nationalisms. They also question how, on the other hand, migrant struggles to cross this territory have intersected with local movements against nationalism and silenced political alternatives. They use the notion of joint-agency, that is, the co-articulation of mobility struggles and antinationalist struggles, in ex-Yugoslavia to read the recent history of the route across the region generally and the current predicament in Bosnia and Herzegovina in particular. This alternative reading facilitates an understanding of the potential of struggles for freedom of movement to reanimate a critique of the coloniality of power in the EUropean borderlands such as the Balkans.

AbstractIn Bosnia and Herzegovina astronomy teaching is almost nonexistent. There are only several courses within universities and they are usually given by physicists who themselves have had only elementary courses in astrophysics. When educational outreach is in question, the situation is even more grim. On the other hand, there is a huge interest for astrophysics in the student population. There are several solutions and possibilities which I will present, together with a discussion of the main obstacles which need to be overcome.
