This descriptive study aims to assess the knowledge and awareness of road safety among university students. The study was conducted among students in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia by means of questionnaire disseminated online via social media with shareable link to a Google form. The respondents were self-selected to participate in this study where their responses were self-administrated. Questionnaire consisted of 3 sections included demographic information, knowledge on road signs and road safety law, and road safety awareness. 371 students participated in this study, 66% of them age 23 to 27 years old, 61% were female, 92.5% of respondents have at least one type of license with majority agreed that occurrence of accidents resulted in an increase in road safety awareness. The study found that more than half of the participants could not recognise road sign like parking totally prohibited and speed limit ends here. While, 38% of them correctly identified posted speed limit for expressway. Overall, participants have fair understanding on road safety. Therefore, road safety programmes and education are still relevant to university students as young drivers on the road which is important to increase safety awareness.

Road safety campaigns and programs have been extensively introduced and implemented in Malaysia. However, their effectiveness is still being debated. Children especially will become the unfortunate victims of road accidents if they are unaware of the danger and precaution actions to be safe on the road. In response to that, this paper introduces an application as an alternative that inculcates road safety awareness to further support existing related programs and campaigns. Particularly, an interactive web application incorporating interactive multimedia elements has been designed and evaluated. Results on the usability test indicate a promising success and highlight aspects and issues that can be further focused for improvement and enhancement.

Many visually impaired people worldwide are unable to travel safely and autonomously because they are physically unable to perceive effective visual information during their daily lives. In this research, we study how to extract the character information of the road sign and transmit it to the visually impaired effectively, so they can understand easier. Experimental method is to apply the Maximally Stable External Region and Stroke Width Transform method in Phase I so that the visually impaired person can recognize the letters on the road signs. It is to convey text information to the disabled. The result of Phase I using samples of simple road signs was to extract the sign information after dividing the exact character area, but the accuracy was not good for the Hangul (Korean characters) information. The initial experimental results in the Phase II succeeded in transmitting the text information on Phase I to the visually impaired. In the future, it will be required to develop a wearable character recognition system that can be attached to the visually impaired. In order to perform this task, we need to develop and verify a miniaturized and wearable character recognition system. In this paper, we examined the method of recognizing road sign characters on the road and presented a possibility that may be applicable to our final development.

This work presents the practical design of a system that faces the problem of identification and validation of private no-parking road signs. This issue is very important for the public city administrations since many people, after receiving a code that identifies the signal at the entrance of their private car garage as valid, forget to renew the code validity through the payment of a city tax, causing large money shortages to the public administration. The goal of the system is twice since, after recognition of the official road sign pattern, its validity must be controlled by extracting the code put in a specific sub-region inside it. Despite a lot of work on the road signs’ topic having been carried out, a complete benchmark dataset also considering the particular setting of the Italian law is today not available for comparison, thus the second goal of this work is to provide experimental results that exploit machine learning and deep learning techniques that can be satisfactorily used in industrial applications.

Road safety awareness is one of the many awareness programs that are often highlighted and discussed around the world. The road accident statistics are increased due to the lack of exposure and awareness among communities about traffic environments and rules. Children are one of the most vulnerable populations involved in traffic accidents. The children are unable to familiarize themselves with the surroundings, especially when crossing the road. This research attempts to improve road-safety awareness among children by using computer games as a learning tool. Specifically, it determines the progress of knowledge on the road rules and conditions after the children using the tool. The computer online game is suitable methods to use for teaching them on road safety due to interactive application always intimate the children. Besides the survey questions that related to road traffic rules, we also measures the attitude towards road safety in the participant (i.e., children and adult). Descriptive analysis in frequency, mean, and percentage are used to describe the respondent’s information. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) is used to analyze the findings. The overall findings show that all respondents have positive feedback on online games as a road safety tool. Interestingly, the significant output shows on the different knowledge about road safety when the children are analyzed for before and after they played the games. The future research is suggested to study the other group of participant as the respondent in this work is limited to the primary school children. It can be improved by involving the large sample size and wider location.

India is a country with a dense road network and has a complex system to maintain road safety. As we all know that we have a complex traffic system in which we have more than 100 types of traffic symbols in it. While driving, it is tough to take care of all the symbols placed at the road end. Sometimes the driver does not know what that symbol says. In this system sometimes the driver misses the road signs because the attention of the driver is overdriving the vehicle safe which leads to an accident or issuing Challan. Sometimes the traffic signs don't notice by the driver. So all the drivers or the vehicle need a system which is capable to read and recognize the traffic symbol placed at the road end and the system must be capable of giving simple instruction to the driver. So that system can automatically detect which type of symbol is this and can notify the driver. The system must have a good accuracy rate, as well as the system, must have a very good speed of working. This system can also be used in driverless cars to notify the system about the road signals and hence the system can tackle all the symbols carefully.

Abstract The paper presents the description of the decision system implemented for Intelligent Road Signs. It focuses on the implementation of the novel air transparency analysis system and its integration with the rule system and the speed control infrastructure. Moreover, there are presented issues of making decisions about the content displayed in the case of autonomous and cooperating signs. To reflect more closely on real-life situations, it is assumed that the content presented by the IRS changes dynamically, depending on the road traffic and weather parameters. The IRS system operation was presented using fog detection as an example.

Eye tracking technology is often used in road safety research. Eye tracker are used during real and simulated driving to investigate driver’s behaviour. It is also used for assessing influence of new elements, like experimental road signs or road signs from different country, on driver’s behaviour and performance. However it should be noted that, the probability that the signs will be noticed cannot be solely assessed by eye tracking data. Therefore there is a need to complete the results with additional sources of data, eg questionnaire study. In the paper results of research concerning road signs perception carried out with 33 volunteers are presented. Twelve boards with different road situations in the form of photos taken from the driver's perspective were prepared. After the exposure, the volunteer answered questions about the memorized information presented on the road signs.

In India there is road network of 33 lakh kilometres of which nearly 65% of the cargo activity and 80% of traveller movement is on the road networks. National Highways constitute around 1.7% of the road network but carry about 40% of the aggregate road traffic. Number of vehicles has been increasing at a normal pace of 10.16% for every annum in the course of the most recent five years. Road safety audit is the formal methodology for getting accident potential and safety potential in the development of new road schemes and the schemes for the improvement and maintenance of the existing road facilities. Accident prevention and accident reduction are the two main strategies in the road safety. In this case study we analyse the NH-65 which is the major highway connecting VIJAYAWADA and HYDERABAD from the 270thKM to 247th KM. The highway carries considerable amount of traffic throughout the day and it has number of conflict points such as villages, industries. Detailed analysis of NH-65 will be carried out from the point of view of safety and geometric design aspects will be performed. This paper aims to identify deficiencies, improving design aspects, enhancing credibility of the roads.

Traffic accident is an accident that occurs unexpectedly and unintentionally involving a vehicle which resulted in casualties and material damage. The problem of traffic accidents on the road Duduksampeyan Sta km 16 + 000 - Sta km 16 + 500 is the most significant. The purpose of this study was conducted to determine the level of traffic accidents that occurred in 2013-2018. This study uses a method that refers to the calculation of the number of accidents. The observations in the field of road safety facilities are still inadequate, lighting is in only one side of the road as much as ± 10 pieces, and the absence of traffic signs (speed limits, accident-prone areas, etc.). The volume of daily traffic averages on these roads as much as 3833 veh / hour. The results of the analysis carried accident rate by 158 the highest annual accident / km occurred in 2018. Meanwhile, based on the fatality index, it was 47.76%, the highest in 2013.
