The purpose of this work was to control undesired structure and vibrations caused from vortex shedding by controlling the flow downstream of the cylinder. The porosities of the outer cylinder and the splitter plate used for this purpose are available. The other parameter was plate angle based on the flow direction as a reference. The parameter expressed as porosities, ß was chosen to have a %70 openness for the outer cylinder (ß = 0.7) and was kept constant throughout all experiments. On the other hand, two different porosities were used for the splitter plate. For the first plate, there was no hole on the plate which we call ß = 0 or solid plate. For the second plate, it has ß = 0.7 porosity. ß = 0.7 porosity was also the value chosen for the outer cylinder. The range of the splitter plate angle was selected within 60o? ? ?180o with an increment of 30o. The results were extracted using two different methods. The first was the dye visualization experiment and the second is the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement. As a result, it was observed that independently from the outer cylinder effect, the plate porosity and plate angle are effective on the level of turbulence and the flow structure in the annular region.

In the present study, it was aimed to suppress the vortex shedding occurred in the near wake of a circular cylinder (inner cylinder) by perforated cylinder (outer cylinder) in shallow water flow. The inner cylinder (Di) and outer cylinder (Do) have fixed diameters, such as Di = 50 mm and Do = 100 mm, respectively. The effect of porosity, β, was examined using four different porosity ratios, 0.3, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8. In order to investigate the effect of arc angle of outer cylinder, α, four different arc angles, α = 360°, 180°, 150° and 120° were used. The experiments were implemented in a recirculating water channel using the particle image velocimetry, PIV technique. The depth-averaged free-stream velocity was kept constant as U∞ = 100 mm/s which corresponded to a Reynolds number of Re = 5000 based on the inner cylinder diameter. The results demonstrated that the suppression of vortex shedding is substantially achieved by perforated outer cylinder for arc angle of α = 360° at β = 0.6. Turbulence Kinetic Energy statistics show that porosity, β, is highly effective on the flow structure. In comparison with the values obtained from the case of the bare cylinder, at porosity β = 0.6, turbulence characteristics are reduced by %80. Also, the point, which the values of maximum TKE, shift to a farther downstream compared to the case of bare cylinder.

Wind-tunnel pressure drop measurements for airflow through two samples of forty-pore-per-inch commercially available open-cell aluminum foam were undertaken. Each sample’s cross-sectional area perpendicular to the flow direction measured 10.16 cm by 24.13 cm. The thickness in the flow direction was 10.16 cm for one sample and 5.08 cm for the other. The flow rate ranged from 0.016 to 0.101 m3/s for the thick sample and from 0.025 to 0.134 m3/s for the other. The data were all in the fully turbulent regime. The pressure drop for both samples increased with increasing flow rate and followed a quadratic behavior. The permeability and the inertia coefficient showed some scatter with average values of 4.6 × 10−8 m2 and 2.9 × 10−8 m2, and 0.086 and 0.066 for the thick and the thin samples, respectively. The friction factor decayed with the Reynolds number and was weakly dependent on the Reynolds number for Reynolds number greater than 35.

The transition from laminar to turbulent in-tube flow is studied in this paper. Water flow in a glass tube with an inside diameter of 21.7 mm was investigated by two methods. First, a dye visualization test using a setup similar to the 1883 experiment of Osborne Reynolds was conducted. For the dye visualization, Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 1000 to 3500 were tested and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow was observed between Reynolds numbers of 2500 and 3500. For the second method, a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was used to measure the velocity profiles of flow in the same glass tube at Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 500 to 9000. The resulting velocity profiles were compared to theoretical laminar profiles and empirical turbulent power-law profiles. Good agreement was found between the lower Reynolds number flow and the laminar profile, and between the higher Reynolds number flow and turbulent power-law profile. In between the flow appeared to be in a transition region and deviated some between the two profiles.

Time Resolved Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (TRDPIV) was used in conjunction with spectral analysis to study the effects of Leading Edge Blowing (LEB) flow control on the near-wake of a circular cylinder. The airfoil was placed 1.9 circular cylinder diameters downstream, effectively acting as a splitter plate. Spectral measurements of the TRDPIV results indicated that the presence of the airfoil decreased the Strouhal number from 0.19 to 0.12 as anticipated. When activated the LEB jet organized the circular cylinder wake, effectively neutralizing the effect of the splitter plate and modifying the wake so as to return the Strouhal number to 0.19. Thus the circular cylinder wake returned to its normal shedding frequency, even in the presence of the airfoil. Evidence presented in this study supports the notion that the LEB jet directly excites the circular cylinder shear layers causing instability, roll up, and subsequent vortex shedding.

The objective of this paper was to investigate acoustic pressure waves and the transient flow structure emitted from the single bubble near an elastic boundary based on the particle image velocimetry (PIV). A combination of an electric-spark bubble generator and PIV were used to measure the temporal bubble shapes, transient flow structure, as well as the mid-span deflection of an elastic boundary. Results are presented for three different initial positions near an elastic boundary, which were compared with results obtained using a rigid boundary. A formula relating velocity and pressure was proposed to calculate the acoustic pressure contours surrounding a bubble based on the velocity field of the transient flow structure obtained using PIV. The results show the bubbles near the elastic boundary presented a “mushroom” bubble and an inverted cone bubble. Based on the PIV-measured acoustic pressure contours, a significant pressure difference is found between the elastic boundary and the underside of the bubble, which contributed to the formation of the “mushroom” bubble and inverted cone bubble. Furthermore, the bubbles had opposite migration direction near rigid and elastic boundaries, respectively. In detail, the bubble was repelled away from the elastic boundary and the bubble was attracted by the rigid boundary. The resultant force made up of a Bjerknes force and buoyancy force dominated the migration direction of the bubble.

Flange height is between the geometric features that contribute efficiently to improve the diffuser aerodynamic performances. Results obtained from wind tunnel experiments, particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements, and numerical simulations reveal that at the diffuser inlet section, the wind velocity increases as the flange height increases. Nevertheless, there is an optimal ratio (flange height/inlet section diameter, Hopt/Da ≈ 0.15) beyond it, the flange height effect on the velocity increase diminishes. This behavior can be explained by both the positions of the two contra-rotating vortices generated downstream of the diffuser and the pressure coefficient at their centers. Indeed, it was found that, as the flange height increases, the two vortices move away from each other in the flow direction and since the flange height exceeds (Hopt/Da), they became too distant from each other and from the flange. While the pressure coefficients at the vortices' centers increase with (H/Da), attain a maximum when (Hopt/Da) is reached, and then decrease. This suggests that the wind velocity increase depends on the pressure coefficient at the vortices' centers. Therefore, it depends on the vortices' locations which are in turn controlled by the flange height. In practice, this means that the diffuser could be more efficient if equipped with a control system able to hold the vortices too near from the flange.

Abstract Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a well-established technique for determining the flow direction and velocity magnitude of complex flows. This paper presents a methodology for executing this non-intrusive measurement technique to study a scaled-up turbine vane geometry within an annular cascade at engine-relevant conditions. Custom optical tools such as laser delivery probes and imaging inserts were manufactured to mitigate the difficult optical access of the test section and perform planar PIV. With the use of a burst-mode Nd: YAG laser and Photron FASTCAM camera, the frame straddling technique is implemented to enable short time intervals for the collection of image pairs and velocity fields at 10 kHz. Furthermore, custom image processing tools were developed to optimize the contrast and intensity balance of each image pair to maximize particle number and uniformity, while removing scattering and background noise. The pre-processing strategies significantly improve the vector yield under challenging alignment, seeding, and illumination conditions. With the optical and software tools developed, planar PIV was conducted in the passage of a high-pressure stator row, at mid-span, in an annular cascade. Different Mach and Reynolds number operating conditions were achieved by modifying the temperature and mass flow. With careful spatial calibration, the resultant velocity vector fields are compared with Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations of the vane passage with the same geometry and flow conditions. Uncertainty analysis of the experimental results is also presented and discussed, along with prospects for further improvements.

Abstract Discrete hole film cooling has been commonly used as an effective cooling technique to protect gas turbine blades from hot gas. There have been numerous investigations on the cylindrical hole and shaped hole, but few experimental investigations on the cooling mechanism of the novel film holes with side holes (anti-vortex hole and sister hole) are available. This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation to study the film cooling performance and flow structure of four kinds of film holes (cylindrical hole, fan-shaped hole, anti-vortex hole and sister hole) on the flat plate. The film holes have the same main hole diameter of 4mm and the same inclination angle of 45°. The adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is obtained by the steady-state Thermochromic Liquid Crystal (TLC). The flow visualization experiment and numerical investigation are performed to investigate the flow structure and counter-rotating vortex pair (CRVP) intensity. The smoke is selected as the tracer particle in the flow visualization experiment. The mainstream Reynolds number is 2900, the blowing ratio ranges from 0.3 to 2.0, and the density ratio of coolant to mainstream is 1.065. Experimental results show that compared with the cylindrical hole, the film cooling performance of the anti-vortex hole and sister hole shows significant improvement at all blowing ratios. The sister hole can achieve the best cooling performance at blowing ratios of 0.3 to 1.5. The fan-shaped hole only performs well at high blowing ratios and it performs best at the blowing ratio of 2.0. Flow visualization experiment and numerical investigation reveal that the anti-vortex hole and sister hole can decrease the CRVP intensity of the main hole and suppress the coolant lift-off because of side holes, which increases the film coverage and cooling effectiveness. For the sister hole, the side holes are parallel to the main hole, but for the anti-vortex hole, there are lateral angles between them. The coolant interaction between the side holes and main hole of the sister hole is stronger than that of the anti-vortex hole. Therefore, the sister hole provides better film cooling performance than the anti-vortex hole.
