Industrial enterprises are the core subjects to reduce carbon emissions. Their innovations for low-carbon production are the key to determine the effect of carbon emission reduction. This paper examines the impact of executive experience, especially the overseas experience, on enterprise innovations across 3559 enterprises in low-carbon, medium-carbon and high-carbon industries respectively. Interestingly, it shows that the executive experience has only played a significant role in enterprise innovations of high-carbon industrial enterprises, indicating that the executive’s international vision might help to promote innovation in high-carbon industry. Then, it’s also discovered that there is a mediating effect of international strategy which helps to better understand the impact mechanism of executive experience on enterprise innovation in high-carbon industry.

The austenite/pearlite growth interface in a model alloy steel (Fe-1lMn-0.8C-0.5V nominal wt%) is being studied in an attempt to characterise the morphology and mechanism of VC precipitation at the growth interface. In this alloy pearlite nodules can be grown isothermally in austenite that remains stable at room temperature thus facilitating examination of the transformation interfaces. This study presents preliminary results of thin foil TEM of the precipitation of VC at the austenite/ferrite interface, which reaction, termed interphase precipitation, occurs in a number of low- carbon HSLA and microalloyed medium- and high- carbon steels. Some observations of interphase precipitation in microalloyed low- and medium- carbon commercial steels are also reported for comparison as this reaction can be responsible for a significant increase in strength in a wide range of commercial steels. The experimental alloy was made as 50 g argon arc melts using high purity materials and homogenised. Samples were solution treated at 1300 °C for 1 hr and WQ. Specimens were then solutionised at 1300 °C for 15 min. and isothermally transformed at 620 °C for 10-18hrs. and WQ. Specimens of microalloyed commercial steels were studied in either as-rolled or as- forged conditions. Detailed procedures of thin foil preparation for TEM are given elsewhere.

Low-carbon governance at the county level has been an important issue for sustainable development due to the large contributions to carbon emission. However, the experiences of carbon emission governance at the county level are lacking. This paper discusses 5 carbon emission governance zones for 1753 counties. The zoning is formed according to a differentiated zoning method based on a multi-indicator evaluation to judge if the governance had better focus and had formulated a differentiated carbon emission governance system. According to zoning results, there is 1 high-carbon governance zone, 2 medium-carbon governance zones, and 2 low-carbon zones. The extensive high-carbon governance zone and medium-carbon zones are key governance areas, in which the counties are mainly located in the northern plain areas and southeast coastal areas and have contributed 51.88% of total carbon emissions. This paper proposes differentiated governance standards for each indicator of the 5 zones. The differentiated zoning method mentioned in this paper can be applied to other governance issues of small-scale regions.

Given the low carbon transformation of our energy systems, demand response has the potential to increase the adaptability of electricity demand to a volatile electricity supply. In this article, we investigate the demand response potential for the case where substituting technologies are available in an energy-intensive industrial production process. The available production technologies may not only differ in their technical characteristics, but also vary by the necessary input materials. We present a generic linear optimization model for such a production process and apply it to a real-world example in the paper industry. The results show that the question of which substituting technologies are used in an optimal production schedule to which degree, is highly influenced by the combination of current input parameters such as prices. In direct consequence, the corresponding demand response potential is not a fixed number. From an operational perspective, this input dependency implies that the price relation of raw input materials used in substituting technologies can be a crucial driving force for the ability and willingness of industrial enterprises to provide demand response. In addition, from a strategic perspective, long-run investments in demand response potentials may rely on expected price development of major input factors.

In a dynamic competitive market environment where most companies operate, ensuring a high efficiency level of their activities requires the acquisition and further development of certain competitive advantages. Among these advantages, one of the central places belongs to the ability of enterprises to use innovative developments in their activities. Particularly, this applies to the manufacture and sale by business entities of new improved types of products. Natheless, a significant impact on the enterprises competitiveness level can also have the use of innovative technological processes, especially energy-saving technologies, the use of which allows to produce products with lower energy costs. The degree to which enterprises use various types of innovations in the course of their economic activity is such a property of business entities as their innovativeness. Since there are many innovations types, can be implemented in enterprises, it is important to analyze the impact of each type on the innovation level of economic entities. Among other things, this applies to such innovations as innovative energy-saving technologies. Having regard to the above, the research aim is to assess the impact of energy-saving technological changes on the enterprises innovation. The quantitative measurement possibility of this property in business entities was considered. The connection between the earning power of enterprises and the level of their innovation was specified. The reduction in carbon emissions by industrial enterprises is an important means for promoting environmental protection and achieving sustainable development. To determine the impact of carbon emissions reduction on supply chain operation and financing decision-making, in this study we designed three financing strategies, i.e., bank loan financing, equity financing, and hybrid financing (a combination of bank loan financing and equity financing), for a manufacturer (leader) and a low-carbon supply chain composed of a capital-constrained retailer, constructed Stackelberg game models, solved the equilibrium results under each financing strategy using the reverse recursion method, and revealed the financing preference of the supply chain member companies through comparative analysis. The results showed that the increase in the consumers’ low-carbon preference and equity financing ratio have positive impacts on supply chain equilibrium, a result that is opposite that for the impact of the interest rate of bank loan financing; additionally, the abovementioned three factors jointly determine the profit of the manufacturer of the low-carbon supply chain, while the retailer’s profit is affected by the equity dividend ratio. Finally, we present the conditions for the financing preference of the manufacturer and the retailer. The findings of this study can provide references for low-carbon supply chain companies to make appropriate management decisions.

Eco-innovation is conducive to reducing the costs and impacts on the environment. Meanwhile, executives play an important role in the whole process of enterprise innovation. However, it is unclear whether and to what extent executives’ environmental awareness (EA) affects eco-innovation (EI). Based on the attention-based view, this study discussed the mediating effect of resource flexibility (RF) on the impact of EA on EI and explored the moderating effect of unabsorbed slack resources (USRs). Using surveys collected from 162 Chinese manufacturing firms, we found that (1) EA has a positive impact on EI; (2) RF partially mediates the relationship between EA and eco-management innovation (EMI) and EA and eco-product innovation (EPI); and (3) the effect of EA on EPI weakens with the level of USRs, but the effect of EA on EMI is not affected by the level of USRs. From the perspective of managers’ attention, this study not only enriches the main drivers of eco-innovation but also provides a theoretical and practical framework for the promotion and development of eco-innovation in China.

For a relatively small country such as Korea to successfully establish its presence in the global biotech industry, it must pair a successful domestic model with an effective export strategy. However, there are little empirical findings on the relationship between biotech firms’ internationalization strategy, research and development (R&D) intensity, and sustainable earnings. Thus, we explore this often overlooked area by analyzing the relationship between the international strategies and sustainable earnings of biotech firms. By using a sample of 29,583 firm-year observations in South Korea between 2000 and 2017, this study analyzes the association between internationalization strategy and sustainable earnings. Findings from the analysis show that internationalization strategy has a negative impact on biotech firms. However, the impact of international strategy on sustainable earnings of a biotech firm is observed to be positively influenced by R&D intensity. This study contributes to the research on the determinants of sustainable earnings by empirically proving that biotech firms’ internationalization strategy with high R&D investments leads to an increase in earnings sustainability.

Corporate strategy and enterprise innovation are highly relevant to corporate sustainability. Although previous studies on corporate strategy and enterprise innovation have yielded many results, a consensus regarding the relationship between the two is still lacking. The purpose of this study was to empirically analyze the impact of corporate strategy on corporate innovation performance and analyze corporate risk-taking as a potential factor mediating such. Based on data for listed Chinese A-share manufacturing companies for 2008 to 2018, this empirical study found that corporate strategy and corporate innovation show an inverted U-shaped relationship. Corporate risk-taking plays a mediating effect between corporate strategy and corporate innovation performance. This study expands the knowledge on situational variables and the mechanism by which corporate strategy might impact enterprise innovation and can enlighten managers to promote the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises.
