This manuscript presents a study on how leader motivating language and follower self-leadership act to influence a follower’s feelings of psychological safety. This study found that both constructs significantly influenced psychological safety in samples from India and the USA. Additionally, this study found that this influence occurred through the mediating processes of trust in leadership, leader inclusiveness, and role clarity. These mediators fully explained motivating language’s relationship with psychological safety, but only partially explained self-leadership’s relationship. Differences existed in the model between samples, but self-leadership showed an overall consistency between the samples for most relationships. Follow-up analysis indicated that self-leadership without leader communication support lead to a weak or non-existent relationship between self-leadership and psychological safety, but a positive and relatively strong relationship in the presence of motivating language.

145 Background: ACRPC causes >30,000 deaths/year in the USA. The front-line treatment consists of docetaxel-based chemotherapy (D). 50% of patients (pts) show at least a 50% PSA decline during D and >15% show a partial response (R) in measurable disease. However, most of these pts present progression (P) after a median of 6-8 months (m). mCRPC remains driven by ligand-dependent androgen (A) receptor signaling. Ketoconazole (K) is a nonspecific cytochrome-P 17 inhibitor (CYP17i) able to block adrenal A synthesis. Low-dose K (LDK), (200 mg, t.d.s) has shown interesting activity in mCRPC after P to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). The FDA recently granted approval to Abiraterone acetate, a selective CYP17i showing a survival benefit after P to D. The role of a CYP17i in the maintenance setting after response/stabilization to D has never been studied. Methods: 38 mCRPC pts starting D after P to ADT maintained LHRHa and additionally received a median of 7 cycles (3-12) of front-line three-weekly D (75 mg/m2) plus daily prednisone (10 mg). 20/38 pts showing no progression to D were enrolled. One month after the last D cycle 10 pts were assigned to MT with LDK plus prednisone (10 mg daily) and continued to receive LHRHa while the 10 pts in the control arm continued on LHRHa alone. Progression-free survival (PFS) was the primary endpoint of the study. Results: After a median follow-up of 27 m, all pts in the control arm progressed after D treatment while 8/10 pts progressed to MT. PFS from D initiation was 11.4 m for MT and 8.9 m for control arm (p=0.025). Toxicity profiles showed no significant differences between both arms. No pts discontinued LDK for toxicity reasons. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study testing a CYP17i for MT after response/stabilization to D in mCRPC. Although this is a small cohort of pts and a longer follow-up is needed, these preliminary data show a significant benefit in PFS of more than 2 months with LDK MT compared to no MT after D with a favorable toxicity profile. Thus, a further analysis in a larger series and the potential impact of this PFS benefit on the overall survival is warranted.

Purpose This paper aims to examine how leader communication can help foster an employee’s ability to set and achieve goals and align these goals with organizationally relevant purposes. Design/methodology/approach To better understand this process, the authors use two well-supported theories – motivating language to provide a framework for understanding leader communication and self-leadership to examine employee goal setting. Findings Examining these two theories together has resulted in a practical, theory-based guide for how managers can use leader communication to improve workplace results. Originality/value This paper offers researchers a new lens through which to view workplace practices in organizations driven by innovation and knowledge management, and a framework for managers and consultants to develop methods for inspiring and guiding workers toward improved organizational performance.

We report an experiment examining the factors that produce false recognition in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. We selectively manipulated the probability that critical lures produce study items in free association, known as forward associative strength (FAS), while controlling the probability that study items produce critical lures in free association, known as backward associative strength (BAS). Results showed that false recognition of critical lures failed to differ between strong and weak FAS conditions. Follow-up correlational analyses further supported this outcome, showing that FAS was not correlated with false recognition, despite substantial variability in both variables across our stimulus sets. However, these correlational analyses did produce a significant and strong relationship between BAS and false recognition. These results support views that propose false memory is produced by activation spreading from study items to critical lures during encoding, which leads critical lures to be confused with episodically-experienced events.

This study examines the links between leader communication (as conceptualized through motivating language) and follower organizational identification as mediated by follower cultural knowledge and fit. Results show that motivating language has a positive and strong effect on follower organizational identification with a one standard deviation increase in motivating language corresponding to over a half of a standard deviation increase in follower organizational identification. This influence comes partly through growth in a follower’s cultural knowledge and fit, but also through a direct influence. Model testing occurred with subjects from the USA and India with the model fitting equally well in both nations. These findings have important implications for research and practice which are explained in the paper’s discussion and conclusion section.

Background: While the role of telemedicine is well established in certain fields of medicine, its role in disciplines like Neuromuscular medicine is not clear. COVID 19 pandemic compelled the medical community to utilize telemedicine and policies were rapidly changed to continue patient care during the pandemic. However, to guide the future of telemedicine in this field where a physical exam is an integral part of the visit, it is imperative to get a physician's opinion on this matter. We designed this study to assess the opinion of neuromuscular physicians about telemedicine, their preference, and factors influencing their decision. Methods: We used an online form composed of eleven questions to survey 94 neuromuscular specialists across the USA and Canada during September 2020. Results:  90.43% of participating neuromuscular specialists preferred physical visits with new patients versus 44.68% preferred physical visits with follow-up patients. The majority thought that telemedicine reduces revenue (58.51%), quality of service (57.45%), and quality time spent with patients (62.77%). Nevertheless, most surveyed physicians agreed that telemedicine is time-efficient (84.04%), improves patient compliance (70.21%), and will be a long-term solution in clinical practice (67.02%). Finally, 58.51% revealed that telemedicine does not affect workload. Conclusion: Neuromuscular specialists preferred seeing new patients and revealing a new diagnosis to the patient in physical visits, but they also considered telemedicine a long-term method that would continue to increase in the post-pandemic future, emphasizing the need to address their concerns to facilitate telemedicine.

Abstract. Background: Little is known about the role of resilience in the likelihood of suicidal ideation (SI) over time. Aims: We examined the association between resilience and SI in a young-adult cohort over 4 years. Our objectives were to determine whether resilience was associated with SI at follow-up or, conversely, whether SI was associated with lowered resilience at follow-up. Method: Participants were selected from the Personality and Total Health (PATH) Through Life Project from Canberra and Queanbeyan, Australia, aged 28–32 years at the first time point and 32–36 at the second. Multinomial, linear, and binary regression analyses explored the association between resilience and SI over two time points. Models were adjusted for suicidality risk factors. Results: While unadjusted analyses identified associations between resilience and SI, these effects were fully explained by the inclusion of other suicidality risk factors. Conclusion: Despite strong cross-sectional associations, resilience and SI appear to be unrelated in a longitudinal context, once risk/resilience factors are controlled for. As independent indicators of psychological well-being, suicidality and resilience are essential if current status is to be captured. However, the addition of other factors (e.g., support, mastery) makes this association tenuous. Consequently, resilience per se may not be protective of SI.
