This research presents a new intervention methodology on arches and vaults of a Renaissance factory in the Colegio Santo Domingo de Orihuela (16th century) using 3D software LIDAR technology that verifies the execution process of the works studying the different charges states and structure behavior. This document aims to explain a working methodology in the monitoring of structural repair interventions in the architectural heritage, in the specific case of the replacement of traditional one-way timber joist frame slabs on structures of former, splay and groin arches between vaults. This involves the compilation and processing of two types of data: on the one hand, the analysis of the different load states to which the intervention is exposed in its different phases: initial, dismantling of the different layers of traditional construction and replacement by the new structural system; and, on the other hand, the graphic information provided by the photogrammetry techniques used to dimension and define the spatial position of the structural elements that have historically resolved the covering of the architectural space in this type of Renaissance solution. The different layers and demolished materials have been verified by analysing their constructive disposition, thicknesses, and dimensions of the elements that formed part of the initial construction system and their own weights. In addition, the new construction systems used in the restoration project generate a state of loads similar to the existing one. The LIDAR technology used in the research process provides graphic data of the spatial position of the arches and vaults studied in the different states of the construction intervention. The point clouds obtained are analysed by taking as reference fixed points (considered unalterable and infinitely rigid) of the refectory and the coordinates of the initial and final states are compared. The results show minimal variations between the two positions, which justifies the goodness of the construction methods used and the structural safety obtained in the complex. This methodology applied to arches and vaults in heritage architecture guarantees the control and recording of the movements produced in the process.

Little has been discussed in academia about the close relationship between the Renaissance of the 16th century and melancholy humor, and esoteric elements arising mainly from Florentine Neoplatonism. The link between melancholy and esotericism becomes very clear when we analyze the gravure “Melencolia I” by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), composed of a significant number of symbols that refer to an esoteric religious culture that then emerged. Renaissance melancholy gained several nuances. On the one hand, it was considered a sin, a despicable mood characteristic of witches; on the other hand, a deep sense of inspiration typical of men of “genius”. This ambivalence also occurred in the firmament, as the melancholic people were guided by the dark planet Saturn, according to astrological belief. We also have the cultural scenario of the 16th century, especially in Dürer's Germany, which contributed to strengthening the melancholy issues.

In this paper we will describe the historical development of the Spanish doublet ante-antes (‘before’) and explore the question whether a process of exaptation is involved (cf. Lass 1990). We will argue that the final –s of antes, that originally marked the adverbial status of the word, in the course of time had become a kind of morphological ‘junk’ (cf. Lass 1990) and, subsequently, could be exploited in order to encode the semantic opposition between temporal meaning on the one hand, and adversative meaning on the other hand. However, based on quantitative data we will show that the incipient semantic redistribution over the course of the 16th century rather suddenly collapsed, leading to a differentiation between the prepositional ante and adverbial antes.

Interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and counter-disciplinarity are the hallmark of cultural studies and qualitative research, as scholars over the past three decades have discussed through extensive self-reflexive inquiry into their own unstable and ever-shifting methods (Denzin and Lincoln, 2018; Dicks et al., 2006: 78; Grossberg, 2010). Building on the interdisciplinary thought of Jacques Rancière and Caroline Levine on the one hand and traditions of participatory action research and activist anthropology on the other, we bring the methods conversation forward by shifting the focus from disciplines to forms and by making a case for aesthetic practice as qualitative research process. In this paper, the question of methods is approached through the action-based Cartonera Publishing Project with editoriales cartoneras in Latin America – community publishers who make low-cost books out of materials recovered from the street in the attempt to democratise and decolonise literary/artistic production – and specifically through our process-oriented, collaborative work with four cartonera publishers in Brazil and Mexico. Guided by the multiple forms of cartonera knowledge production, which are rooted not in academic research but rather in aesthetic practice and community relations, we offer an innovative ‘trans-formal’ methodological framework, which opens up new pathways for practitioners and researchers to work, think and act across social, cultural and aesthetic forms.

This article is about survival and resistance in the context of armed conflicts, such as the one in Colombia. The story of Anna, a “Total Llanera woman” was constructed during the inquiry “Narratives of Surviving and Restoration” conducted in Manizales, Colombia. Working within a socioconstructionist framework and with narrative therapy assumptions, the inquiry was designed to comprehend the survival process of people affected by the armed conflict, through a narrative and action research process. The story of Anna was analyzed using the Listening Guide Method, which intended to offer a way of tuning into the polyphonic voice of another person. The voices identified were enduring, caring, fighting, and what’s not right. The article presents the analysis of each voice and also the movement, the tensions, the harmonies and the dissonances between the different voices.

That several of the planets as well as that which we inhabit are surrounded by atmosphere, astronomical observations have long since established; the extent, however, to which in particular planets such atmospheres are diffused, is as yet not satisfactorily determined. The former rests principally upon phenomena observed on the planets’ discs, whilst the latter derives its support chiefly from those detected at or near their respective limbs. Every night, nay almost every hour, may give us indication of the one, whilst years are sometimes necessary, as in the case of planets unattended by satellites, to help us to the other; thus the hypothesis of the extensive atmosphere of Mars derives its origin from the observations of Cassini and Roëmer, and has stood more than a century and a half without refutation or support. The observations to which I allude formed part of a series undertaken for the determination of the parallax of Mars, and are recorded in the Mémoires de l’Académie des Sciences. Cassini’s were made at Briare and at La Charité sur Loire; whilst Roémer’s was obtained at the Royal Observatory of Paris.

3D object detection plays an important role in a large number of real-world applications. It requires us to estimate the localizations and the orientations of 3D objects in real scenes. In this paper, we present a new network architecture which focuses on utilizing the front view images and frustum point clouds to generate 3D detection results. On the one hand, a PointSIFT module is utilized to improve the performance of 3D segmentation. It can capture the information from different orientations in space and the robustness to different scale shapes. On the other hand, our network obtains the useful features and suppresses the features with less information by a SENet module. This module reweights channel features and estimates the 3D bounding boxes more effectively. Our method is evaluated on both KITTI dataset for outdoor scenes and SUN-RGBD dataset for indoor scenes. The experimental results illustrate that our method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods especially when point clouds are highly sparse.

We propose a flexible framework for automated forest patch delineations that exploits a set of canopy structure features computed from airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds. The approach is based on an iterative subdivision of the point cloud using k-means clustering followed by an iterative merging step to tackle oversegmentation. The framework can be adapted for different applications by selecting relevant input features that best measure the intended homogeneity. In our study, the performance of the segmentation framework was tested for the delineation of forest patches with a homogeneous canopy height structure on the one hand and with similar water cycle conditions on the other. For the latter delineation, canopy components that impact interception and evapotranspiration were used, and the delineation was mainly driven by leaf area, tree functional type, and foliage density. The framework was further tested on two scenes covering a variety of forest conditions and topographies. We demonstrate that the delineated patches capture well the spatial distributions of relevant canopy features that are used for defining the homogeneity. The consistencies range from R 2 = 0 . 84 to R 2 = 0 . 86 and from R 2 = 0 . 80 to R 2 = 0 . 91 for the most relevant features in the delineation of patches with similar height structure and water cycle conditions, respectively.


For close on two hundred years, from the late-seventeenth till the mid-nineteenth century, the two houses in New College Lane which stand in the immediate approaches of the College were closely connected with a succession of distinguished scientists—among them John Wallis, Edmund Halley and James Bradley. The houses, with two others further west, occupy the area between the western wall of the cloisters of New College and Hell Passage, the whole length of which formed part of the original endowment of the College, though separated from the street by a narrow strip of ground which until 1850 belonged to the City. On this New College freehold there stood in late medieval times a building known as Stable Hall. In 1560 this tenement was leased to Thomas Nele and Henry Edmonds on the condition that they should ‘nue builde and repaire the said house called Stable Hall,’ the College allowing them sufficient timber, laths and boards for the purpose. Whether this was the beginning of the architectural history of the two houses with which this paper is concerned is an open question. On the one hand, it is clear from a note in the New College Lease Book, made when Nele obtained a new lease fourteen years later, that he had engaged in building by that time. Formerly a Fellow o f New College, he is said, on being appointed Regius Professor of Hebrew, to have ‘entered himself a commoner at Hart Hall and built little lodgings opposite thereunto, joining to the West End of New Coll. Cloister, wherein he lived several years’. On the other hand, Agas’s map of 1578 appears to show a house too hard against the cloister wall to be even the easternmost of the houses that we have today.

Gudrun Lenkersdorf presents a Memorial text written by the Franciscan priest fray Juan de los Reyes. In her introduction, she notes that the priest provides a good description of the province of Chiapa in 1579, at the same time that he relates a number of problems as seen from the point of view of the Franciscans. In it, they blame all such problems on the Dominicans, their rivals, at times unjustly. In spite of this, the document provides a general and fairly complete idea of the changes introduced into the villages by the colonial regime. The Franciscans' opinions are expressed about their congregations, the election of local indigenous officials, the cofradías, the construction of churches, and the punishments inflicted on the Indians who did not obey them. One can see that in the last half of the 16th century, the work of the second generation of Santo Domingo friars did not correspond at all to the Lascanian principles of gentle persuasion. Those who once had been the protectors of the Indians had been transformed into a heavy burden for the autoctonous population. The manuscript of the Avisos is to be found in the Archivo General de las Indias in Sevilla, Audiencia de Guatemala section, legajo 56, as part of the "Relación de las derramas, Guatemala, 1582," folios 3 to 12v. Structural blast design has become a necessary part of the design with increasing terrorist attacks. Terrorist attacks are not the one to make the structures important against blast loading where other explosions such as high gas explosions also take an important place in structural safety. The main objective of this study was to verify the structural performance levels under the impact of different blast loading scenarios. The blast loads were represented by using triangular pulse for single degree of freedom system. The effect of blast load on both corroded and uncorroded reinforced concrete buildings was examined for different explosion distances. Modified plastic hinge properties were used to ensure the effects of corrosion. The results indicated that explosion distance and concrete strength were key parameters to define the performance of the structures against blast loading.
