One area of constant interest in many fields of industry is development of functional multilayer coatings that possess excellent performance characteristics. That is why in our brief review the results of studies of structure and properties of multilayer structures based on binary nitrides of transition or refractory metals obtained by various physical-vapor deposition (PVD) techniques are presented. The influence of substrate temperature, substrate bias voltage, bilayer thickness and interface boundaries on the structure of coatings and their properties, such as hardness, plasticity, wear and corrosion resistance, are discussed in detail. This review may be useful for students and growing community of researchers interested in the synthesis-structure-properties relationship in multilayer coatings based on metal nitrides.

The paper presents ways to increase the wear and corrosion resistance of steel parts by chemical and thermal treatment methods. Comprehensive studies of the structure and properties of St3 steel samples were carried out after simultaneous complex saturation with boron and nickel, boron and tungsten from saturating coatings based on boron carbide. Both compounds of these elements (oxides, carbides, borides) and pure metals were used as suppliers of nickel and tungsten. Studies have shown that multicomponent saturation processes make it possible to form a multiphase structure of a surface layer with a complex of useful properties. Moreover, by chemical-thermal treatment it is possible to obtain such a combination of properties of the hardened product, which cannot be obtained by other methods.

Abstract Thermal spray coatings are very effective in combating wear and corrosion in many applications. New thermal spray processes and coating compositions continue to be developed with concomitant improvements in the performance of the coatings and their use in new applications. Nonetheless, the thermal spray coatings are not without competition from other coating and overlay processes and materials. This brief review considers the microstructures and the wear and corrosion resistance of a number of alternative coatings to thermal spray coatings, including physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electroplating, autocatalytic, and laser cladding.

Nanostructured smart coatings (NSC) based on the TiAlSi-CN composite structure elements were deposited using advanced reactive physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. The novel NSC on steel substrates demonstrated enhanced wear and corrosion resistance required for multifunctional high-tech applications. The deposited NSC containing TiAlSi-CN nanoparticles strengthened by Cr, Nb and Hf additives exhibited a coefficient of friction (CoF) less than 0.2 and wear rate as low as 10E-8 mm3/Nm. In addition, some self-healing properties were observed preventing denitrification of the core carbon-nitride (CN) layer due to specific tribochemical reactions of Al and Si constituents. Thus, the chemical composition and tentative nano-structure of the NSC can be described by a stoichiometric formula TiAlSi-CN:Me/a-CxNy:Si3N4, where Me=Cr, Nb or Hf.
