Two of the differential characteristics of the AECO sector (architecture, engineering, construction and operation) are barriers for the mass creation of training materials for its workers. On the one hand, the workplace is unique and changing over time; on the other, the aging trend of its workers and the unattractive nature of the industry for new generations of professionals. These two problems can be tackled by virtual reality technologies, which allow the agile creation of all kinds of scenarios, while their current technology may be attractive to young people and intuitive for everyone. This work shows the results of an investigation that seeks to provide automated tools based on virtual reality experiences to support learning in occupational risk prevention. This objective is part of the development of a culture for prevention, which allows the treatment of the human factor, with all its complexity and casuistry. The proposal includes the development of a process and tools that allow replicating the specific scenario where the work will be carried out, incorporating risks and probable incidents, systematically establishing cause-effect relationships, incorporating a narrative (storytelling) that provides emotional meaning to users and Lastly, the creation of a workflow that facilitates the agile development of these virtual reality experiences for each specific work.

In attempting to characterize Second Temple legends of the Hasmoneans, the concluding chapter identifies several distinct genres: fragments from Aramaic chronicles, priestly temple legends, Pharisaic legends, and theodicean legends explaining the fall of the Hasmonean dynasty. The chapter then examines, by generation, how Josephus on the one hand, and the rabbis on the other, reworked these embedded stories. The Josephan treatment aimed to reduce the hostility of the early traditions toward the Hasmoneans by imposing a contrasting accusatory framework that blames the Pharisees and justifies the Hasmonean ruler. The rabbinic treatment of the last three generations exemplifies the processes of rabbinization and the creation of archetypal figures. With respect to the first generation, the deliberate erasure of Judas Maccabeus’s name from the tradition of Nicanor’s defeat indicates that they chose to celebrate the Hasmonean victory but concealed its protagonists, the Maccabees, simply because no way was found to bring them into the rabbinic camp.

Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury-related death in the elderly. This study evaluated the effect of virtual reality gait training (VRGT) with non-motorized treadmill on balance and gait ability of elderly individuals who had experienced a fall. Fifty-six elderly individuals living in local communities participated in this study. Subjects who met the selection criteria were randomly divided into a VRGT group (n = 28) and a control group (n = 28). The VRGT group received VRGT with non-motorized treadmill for 50 min a day for 4 weeks and 5 days a week. The control group received non-motorized treadmill gait training without virtual reality for the same amount of time as the VRGT group. Before and after the training, the one-leg-standing test, Berg Balance Scale, Functional Reach test, and Timed Up and Go test were used to assess balance ability, and the gait analyzer system was used to evaluate the improvement in gait spatiotemporal parameters. In the VRGT group, the balance ability variable showed a significant decrease in the one-leg-standing test and a significant improvement in the Timed Up and Go test. With respect to spatiotemporal gait parameters, velocity and step width decreased significantly in the VRGT group (p < 0.05), and stride length and step length were significantly improved in the VRGT group (p < 0.05). VRGT with non-motorized treadmill has been shown to improve balance and gait ability in the elderly. This study is expected to provide basic data on exercise programs for the elderly to prevent falls.

This research aims to design and develop an innovative system, based on an olfactory display, to be used for investigating the directionality of the sense of olfaction. In particular, the design of an experimental setup to understand and determine to what extent the sense of olfaction is directional and whether there is prevalence of the sense of vision over the one of smell when determining the direction of an odor, is described. The experimental setup is based on low cost Virtual Reality (VR) technologies. In particular, the system is based on a custom directional olfactory display, an Oculus Rift Head Mounted Display (HMD) to deliver both visual and olfactory cues and an input device to register subjects’ answers. The VR environment is developed in Unity3D. The paper describes the design of the olfactory interface as well as its integration with the overall system. Finally the results of the initial testing are reported in the paper.

To feel fear in a specific situation is a normal human experience, however, when this fear or aversion becomes excessive and disrupts the day to day life of an individual, it is said the person suffers from a type of anxiety disorder called phobia. One common type of treatment for phobias is exposure therapy (professionals expose the patient gradually to the feared object or situation).The objective of this paper is to implement a Virtual Reality system that simulates a real highway environment which allows to treat patients affected by highway phobias in a safe place.In cooperation with psychologists and psychiatrists, an action protocol was conducted to create and recreate the variables of the virtual environment to which the patient will be subjected to. Once this was completed, a Virtual Reality application was made that simulates a realistic highway which includes exits, overpasses, underpasses, and tunnels, among others.This hardware/software system will include Oculus Rift DK2 VR glasses in order to create an immersive environment that the patient can consider real and who will be able to interact with it. The performance of the vehicle was programmed through physical responses similar to reality as well as techniques of artificial intelligence in the vehicles that will interact with the one controlled by the patient. Also, this system includes a steering wheel, pedals, and a gearshift (manual or automatic).We think that this system will contribute to treating highway phobias, allowing the psychiatrist or psychologist to carry out therapy in an appropriate manner and through the support of technology the professional will have the ability to simulate the anxiogenic environment in a realistic manner so as to achieve effective treatment. In a future work, we must quantify the possible benefits of this type of VR system in phobia patients.

This paper primarily deals with the distribution, and engineering and geotechnical properties of fine grained soils in the Kathmandu Valley. Not much studies have been done on these soils in the past except at some engineering construction sites such as bridges and heavy buildings. Very little data are available on the engineering and geotechnical properties of soils of the valley (IOE, 1983a, 1983b, 1986a, 1986b, 1986c; Koirala et al., 1993; Sadaula, 1993; Shakya, 1987; Soil Test, 1990a, 1990b). The authors conducted detailed laboratory studies on the soils of the Thapathali and Ratnapark areas in the central part of the Kathmandu Valley and the results are presented and discussed. An attempt is also made to broadly evaluate the soil conditions of the valley based on the available data from previous studies conducted by various agencies. The soils of the Kathmandu Valley are mainly produced by weathering of rocks within its watershed boundary. They are in most part lacustrine and fluvial in origin and composed of clayey, silty, sandy and gravely sediments. The maximum thickness of the sediment is found in the central part (550 m at Bhrikutimandap) and southern part (>457m at Harishidhi) of the valley. The engineering properties, basically the index properties such as grain size, natural moisture content specific gravity, Atterberg limits; and the mechanical properties such as penetration resistance, cohesion, unconfined compressive strength, compressibility as well as angle of shearing resistance of fine grained soils were determined and found to vary considerably both in horizontal and vertical directions. The bearing capacity and settlement values of the soils were also determined. It is commonly found that most of the buildings in the Kathmandu Valley are founded on isolated or strip types of foundations and the foundation depth is between 1 and 1.5 m. The study of soil properties of the Kathmandu Valley indicates that the heavy loaded structures should be founded on either raft, mat or pile types of foundation.

From the construction of “new socialist countryside” to the proposal of “full coverage of village planning,” rural construction has gradually been pushed to a climax. However, the current situation of rural landscape construction in China is not optimistic. On the one hand, the rural landscape deviates from its rural and regional characteristics due to deliberately seeking novelty and differences. Based on these two extreme development trends, this article uses virtual reality technology to construct a rural landscape virtual-roaming system, and randomly select 25 people, each group of 5 people, a total of 3 groups, enter the system in batches with a real reduction degree of 30%, 45%, 60%, 75%, and 80% for experimentation and score the system after the experience. The true reduction degree of the first group is 30%; the true reduction degree of the second group is 45%; the true reduction degree of the third group is 60%; the true reduction degree of the fourth group is 75%; and the true reduction degree of the fifth group is 80%. After analyzing the experimental data, it is concluded that when the true reduction degree of the system goes from low to high, people’s satisfaction is higher; when the true reduction degree is as high as 80%, the satisfaction is as high as 9 points; when the true reduction degree of the system goes from low to high, people’s sense of immersion is getting deeper and deeper. When the true reduction degree is 30%, the lowest score for immersion is 1 point; when the true reduction degree is 80%, the lowest score for immersion is 7.5 points; the true reduction of the system decreases from high to low; when it is high, people’s interaction degree becomes stronger and stronger. When the true reduction degree is 30%, the lowest interaction degree score is 2 points; when the true reduction degree is 80%, the lowest interaction degree score is 9 points; it can be seen from this that, with the increase in the degree of realism of the rural landscape virtual-roaming system, it is extremely difficult for people to find whether they are in the virtual or the reality, and their immersion in virtual reality is getting deeper and deeper. This test also confirmed the superiority of the virtual roaming system in rural landscapes, and the experience is extremely effective.

The notion of complexity — as in “education is a complex system” — has two different meanings. On the one hand, there is the epistemic connotation, with “Complex” meaning “difficult to understand, hard to control”. On the other hand, complex has a technical meaning, referring to systems composed of many interacting components, the interactions of which lead to self organization and emergence. For agents, participating in a complex system such as education, it is important that they can reduce the epistemic complexity of the system, in order to allow them to understand the system, to accomplish their goals and to evaluate the results of their activities. We argue that understanding, accomplishing and evaluation requires the creation of simplex systems, which are praxis-based forms of representing complexity. Agents participating in the complex system may have different kinds of simplex systems governing their understanding and praxis. In this article, we focus on three communities of agents in education — educators, researchers and policymakers — and discuss characteristic features of their simplex systems. In particular, we focus on the simplex system of educational researchers, and we discuss interactions — including conflicts or incompatibilities — between their simplex systems and those of educators and policymakers. By making some of the underlying features of the educational researchers’ simplex systems more explicit – including the underlying notion of causality and the use of variability as a source of knowledge — we hope to contribute to clarifying some of the hidden conflicts between simplex systems of the communities participating in the complex system of education.

Abstract The validation of the accessibility, maintainability, mounting/dismantle simulation in a cluttered environment is a key problem during the design process of a mechanical system. On the one hand research in path planning lead to automatic trajectory definition. These systems are really efficient for simple problems. On the other hand direct manipulation is possible thanks to robotic CAD systems. Another direct manipulation is possible with common virtual reality tools that allow the designer immersion in a whole mechanical environment. In such an environment the designer can handle an object in order to check its accessibility. Thanks to the use of a multi-agent architecture we greatly improve the effectiveness of virtual reality tools while coupling algorithmic approaches and direct manipulation. This original method is a solution of a multi-criteria constrained optimisation problem. Theoretical and practical aspects are presented.

The article deals with Augustine’s idea about Creation and Ecology in the first two commentaries that the Bishop of Hippo wrote, namely, De Genesi contra manicheos and De Genesi ad litteram opus inperfectum. The article stresses that in those Works, St. Augustine underlines that the triune God is the creator of all things. The article also stresses God’s omnipotence, the Creation ex/de nihilo, and also the ecological ideas that Augustine presents in those commentaries, such as the Philocalia as a path to discover the Beauty of God in his works; the Order of the Creation in which all creatures are necessary and are interconnected between them; the Creation as a House in which God as the paterfamilias takes care of all things; the human being as the one who has to take charge of Creation in the Name of God, and how all Creation is directed towards God.
