In the recent era, new information technologies have a significant impact on social networks. Initial integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) into city operations has promoted information city, ease of communication and principles of smart communities. Subsequently, the idea of the Internet of Things (IoT) with the specific focus of social IoT (SIoT) has contributed towards the smart cities (SC), which support the city operations with minimal human interaction. The user-generated data obtained by SIoT can be exploited to produce new useful information for creating citizen-centered smart services for SC. The aim of this research is twofold. Firstly, we used the concept of local and global trust to provide new services in SC based on popular online social networks (OSN) data used by the citizens. Secondly, the sustainability of the three different OSN is assessed. This paper investigates the social network domain with regard to the SC. Although in SC, OSN are increasing day by day, there is still an unresolved issue of trust among their users and also OSN are not much sustainable. In this research, we are analyzing the sustainability of different OSN for the SC. We employ datasets of three different social networks for our analyses. A local trust model is used to identify the central user within the local cluster while the global trust-based framework is used to identify the opinion leaders. Our analysis based on the datasets of Facebook, Twitter, and Slashdot unveil that filtration of these central-local users and opinion leaders result in the dispersion and significant reduction in a network. A novel model is being developed that outlines the relationship between local and global trust for the protection of OSN users in SC. Furthermore, the proposed mechanism uses the data posted by citizens on OSN to propose new services by mitigating the effect of untrusted users.

Various groups of people can come together according to their private or business interests forming a virtual community through social networks. However, in addition to the positive effects of this technical breakthrough there are dangerous potential side effects using these high-level networked systems; the sensitive personal or business data can be misused. Therefore, privacy has an increasingly important role in social networks and is becoming a significant area related to business ethics taking into consideration the close connection between trust and privacy. The goal of this chapter is to discuss the role and relationships between trust and privacy in mobile (business) social networks and to introduce the possible types of privacy threats and countermeasures in case of online social networks. A short summary on future trends in mobile social networks is also presented.

In the current digital realities, there is a comprehensive use of information technologies in all spheres of society, including education, science, health care, economy, production, business and government services. This ultimately led to the emergence of Egov - electronic government. E-government uses information and communication technologies, in particular the Internet, to provide services by public sector organizations. Digitalization has become a trigger for the upgrade of e-government to Smart (smart) or intelligent government. This article is devoted to the analysis of the state and development prospects of Smart - government in the UAE. It provides concrete examples of the successful use of high technology in the management of smart cities such as Smart Dubai and Smart Abu Dhabi.

Objective: Information and communication technologies (ICT) have great potential for health care. In this study we explore undergraduate psychology students’ perceptions about different specific uses of ICT for health (i.e. online interventions, health information websites, telehealth and online social networks). A total of 113 students answered an online survey designed to gather their perceptions about the use of these four types of interventions for health purposes. Results: Results showed that online interventions and telehealth were assessed as the best ways of using ICT for health, while the worst way was using social networks for health. The most frequently mentioned advantages were related to the fact that ICT can help with access to information and/or treatments, and that they are comfortable. The most frequently mentioned disadvantages were related to the quality of the information (for social networks and health information websites) and the fact that they were considered impersonal (for telehealth and online interventions). Conclusions: Students were not very enthusiastic about the use of ICT for health. Education is needed to change these perceptions and increase the likelihood that they will incorporate ICT in their future practice.

Abstract The rapid growth and development of information and communication technologies enabled the transition to a global and dynamic communication model. Among the many communication tools that have emerged, online social networks have proven to be the most popular. Its success has to do with the ability to converge several features into a single space, allowing users to share knowledge and experiences, maintain contact with their peers, as well as communicate freely and spontaneously. However, using these virtual platforms we are, inevitably, creating an online history that can affect our personal and professional lives. Facing a difficult and competitive job market, companies seek to capture the best talents, within their list of job candidates. In this context, companies are starting to screen online profiles to validate candidates’ personal characteristics in a non-professional environment. The main purpose of this study is to understand the importance of the activities in online social networks when applying for a job, especially among recent graduates, who are seeking their first professional experience. Results show that even though recent graduates take caution when using social networking sites, especially Facebook, online exposure is not considered an important factor when undergoing employment processes.

AbstractLocation-based services are becoming more and more popular in mobile online social networks (mOSNs) for smart cities, but users’ privacy also has aroused widespread concern, such as locations, friend sets and other private information. At present, many protocols have been proposed, but these protocols are inefficient and ignore some security risks. In the paper, we present a new location-sharing protocol, which solves two issues by using symmetric/asymmetric encryption properly. We adopt the following methods to reduce the communication and computation costs: only setting up one location server; connecting social network server and location server directly instead of through cellular towers; avoiding broadcast encryption. We introduce dummy identities to protect users’ identity privacy, and prevent location server from inferring users’ activity tracks by updating dummy identities in time. The details of security and performance analysis with related protocols show that our protocol enjoys two advantages: (1) it’s more efficient than related protocols, which greatly reduces the computation and communication costs; (2) it satisfies all security goals; however, most previous protocols only meet some security goals.
