Electric compressor systems for air conditioning operations are an essential part in battery electric vehicle systems, which are not applicable to conventional belt-driven compressors due to no combustion engines. Three-phase voltage source inverters (VSI) and interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are generally used for electric compressor systems in battery electric vehicles. Direct current (DC)-link capacitors are a critical component in the power converter systems, which affect the cost, size, performances and scale. Metallized polypropylene film capacitors are considered more reliable than conventional electrolytic capacitors for high temperature environments such as electric vehicle applications. This paper presents comprehensive comparisons and evaluations of electric compressors with two types of DC-link capacitors. Based on a 5 kW IPM motor drives and a VSI with a nominal DC voltage of 360 V for electric compressors, performances with electrolytic and film capacitors have been evaluated by experimental tests.

This work describes an efficient implementation in terms of computation time and resource usage in a Field-Programmable System-On-Chip (FPSoC) of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) algorithm. As an example, the FCS-MPC implementation is used for the current reference tracking of a two-level three-phase power converter. The proposed solution is an enabler for using both complex control algorithms and digital controllers for high switching frequency semiconductor technologies. An original HW/SW (hardware and software) system architecture for an FPSoC is designed to take advantage of a modern operating system, while removing time uncertainty in real-time software tasks, and exploiting dedicated FPGA fabric for the most complex computations. In addition, two different architectures for the FPGA-implemented functionality are proposed and compared in order to study the area-speed trade-off. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed implementation, which achieves a speed hundreds of times faster than the conventional Digital Signal Processor (DSP)-based control platform.

This paper presents a passivity-based control (PBC) design methodology for three-phase voltage source inverters (VSI) for uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems where reduced harmonic distortions for the nonlinear load, reduced output voltage overshoot, and a restricted settling time are required. The output filter design and modification for efficient control and existing challenges with the assignment of scaling coefficients of the output voltage, load, and inductor currents are addressed and analyzed. Notably, special attention is given to the modulator saturation issue through implementing an accurate converter model. Applications of the two versions of PBC in three-phase voltage source inverters using stationary αβ and rotating dq frames for a constant frequency of the output voltage are presented. Furthermore, the influence of the PBC parameters on the power converter performance is investigated. A comparative simulation and the experimental results validate the effectiveness of the presented passivity-based control design methodology.

This paper presents the design and development of a 30-kW 3D printed based air-cooled silicon carbide (SiC) inverter for electric vehicle application. Specifically, an all-SiC air-cooled power module is designed, aiming at reduced thermal resistance for high temperature and high power density operation. The module assembly incorporates three major parts: an optimized 3D printed heat sink, a SiC MOSFET phase leg module, and a two-channel gate driver. The electrical and thermal performance of the power module is evaluated through double pulse test and continuous operation. Based on the air-cooled power module, a three-phase half-bridge voltage source inverter with 3D-printed air duct is built and tested to further verify the performance of the power module.

The low-resolution photoelectric position sensor is used, that is, Hall position sensor replaces the traditional photoelectric encoder and other high-resolution position sensors to monitor the rotor position. However, because the three-phase Hall position sensor can only output six position signals, a hardware circuit design of low-resolution position sensor monitoring rotor position signal is proposed. Meanwhile, nanotechnology has been introduced in the study of micro drive of battery electric vehicle (BEV). BEV driver has some disadvantages such as hysteresis, creep and nonlinearity, which seriously affects its application in nano environment. A nano displacement sensor is designed for the characteristics of BEV driver. The nonlinear problem of micro driver is solved through the closed-loop control of position feedback. In the test, through the verification of rotor position and current waveform, it can be proved that the method based on photoelectric position sensor and rotor position signal monitoring can ensure the low deviation of rotor position calculation and correct output signal of three-phase photoelectric position sensor. The decoupling performance of vector control is verified by 3/2 transformation. In the displacement detection of micro driver, the designed nano displacement sensor has higher resolution and its performance is better than that of the previous three generations of displacement sensors.
