The characterization of pyrolysis oil obtained from mixed waste plastics and its utilization in a compression ignition engine were investigated. The chemical compositions and physicochemical properties of distilled waste plastic oil (WPO) and crude waste plastic oil (CWPO) were analyzed. The experiment was conducted with a variable compression ratio diesel engine at various loads and compression ratios to evaluate combustion characteristics, exhaust emissions, and engine performance. The experimental results show that CWPO contains the highest percentage of carbon atoms in the C4–C11 group, while WPO contains the highest percentage of carbon atoms in the C12–C20 group, similar to the main compositions of diesel fuel. According to the preliminary study in chemical compositions and physicochemical properties, WPO and diesel fuel were selected for the engine test at different compression ratios of 16, 17, and 18 and different engine operating loads of 25%, 50%, and 75% of maximum engine torque at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. It was found that increasing the engine operating load and the compression ratio tends to increase the brake thermal efficiency. Increasing the compression ratio results in a significantly shorter delay time in a combustion state. A lower cetane index and a higher percentage of long chain carbon compounds (C12–C20) could be the main factors affecting higher NOx, CO, and HC emissions with the combustion characteristics of WPO, compared to diesel fuel. The disadvantage of emissions by the use of WPO can be alleviated when the engine is running at maximum load and a high compression ratio.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to get much insight about the combustion and emission characteristics of partially processed high free fatty acid linseed oil, i.e. esterified linseed oil (ELO), and diesel fuel in a single-cylinder compression ignition engine. Design/methodology/approach The variable compression ratio (CR) diesel engine (3.5 kW) of CR ranging from 12:1 to 18:1 is used for the experimentation purpose. In this study, CR varied from 16:1 to 18:1 for investigating the combustion and emissions characteristics of ELO. Various features such as combustion pressure, net heat release rate and mean gas temperature are analysed. The emission characteristics such as hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are investigated with different loads and CRs. The effect of an ambient temperature condition is also reported. Findings Results from this investigation reveal that the burning of ELO is found to be advanced for all CRs as compared to diesel fuel, whereas these features were found to be lower for a CR of 17. Emissions of ELO are found to be higher at all loads and CRs. Overall, this study provides a necessary framework to enhance further research in this area. Originality/value This investigation shows that ELO has better combustion in the first phase of combustion. However, the exhaust emissions of ELO have higher value due to improper combustion in the second and subsequent phase of combustion due to higher viscosity.

Compression ratio has very important influence on fuel economy, emission, and other performances of internal combustion engines. Application of variable compression ratio in diesel engines has a number of benefits, such as limiting maximal in cylinder pressure and extended field of the optimal operating regime to the prime requirements: consumption, power, emission, noise, and multifuel capability. The manuscript presents also the patented mechanism for automatic change engine compression ratio with two-piece connecting rod. Beside experimental research, modeling of combustion process of diesel engine with direct injection has been performed. The basic problem, selection of the parameters in double Vibe function used for modeling the diesel engine combustion process, also performed for different compression ratio values. The optimal compression ratio value was defined regarding minimal fuel consumption and exhaust emission. For this purpose the test bench in the Laboratory for Engines of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac, is brought into operation.
