Eucalyptus cladocalyx F. Muell is a tree species suitable for low-rainfall sites, even with annual average precipitation as low as 150 mm per year. Its wood is classified as highly durable and its permanence in soil is longer than 25 years, so it can be used for multiple applications. Given that about 41% of the world’s land area is classified as drylands, added to the impact of climate change on the availability of water resources, it becomes necessary to use plant species that can tolerate environments with low water availability. In this study, a Bayesian analysis of genetic parameters showed that wood density (WD) was moderately heritable, with a posterior mean of h2 = 0.29 and a Bayesian credibility region (90%) of 0.06–0.74, while the slenderness coefficient (SC) was highly heritable, with a posterior mean of h2 = 0.48 and a Bayesian credibility region (90%) of 0.11–0.87. Through Bayesian regression analysis, we identified four and three significant associations for WD and SC, respectively. Another important finding of the bi-trait Bayesian analysis was the detection of three large-effect pleiotropic QTLs located on LG4 at 52 cM, on LG2 at 125 cM, and on LG6 at 81 cM. Bayesian bi-trait regression and the posterior probability of association indicated that three QTLs presented strong evidence of association with WD and SC. This provides convincing evidence that the loci qtlWD130/qtlSC130, qtlWD195/qtlSC195, and qtlWD196/qtlSC196 have a significant pleiotropic effect. The association mapping based on multivariate Bayesian regression was useful for the identification of genomic regions with pleiotropic effects. These loci can be used in molecular marker-assisted breeding to select trees with better wood density.

Abstract Purpose Sled towing has been shown to be an effective method to enhance the physical qualities in youth athletes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-week sled towing intervention on muscular strength, speed and power in elite youth soccer players of differing maturity status. Method Seventy-three male elite youth soccer players aged 12–18 years (Pre-Peak Height Velocity [PHV] n = 25; Circa-PHV n = 24; Post-PHV n = 24) from one professional soccer academy participated in this study. Sprint assessments (10 m and 30 m), countermovement jump and isometric mid-thigh pull were undertaken before (T1) and after (T2) a 6-week intervention. The training intervention consisted of 6 weeks (2 × per week, 10 sprints over 20 m distance) of resisted sled towing (linear progression 10%–30% of body mass) during the competitive season. Bayesian regression models analysed differences between T1 and T2 within each maturity group. Results There were minimal changes in strength, speed and power (P = 0.35–0.80) for each maturity group across the 6-week intervention. Where there were changes with greater certainty, they are unlikely to represent real effect due to higher regression to the mean (RTM). Conclusion It appears that a 6-week sled towing training programme with loadings of 10%–30% body mass only maintains physical qualities in elite youth soccer players pre-, circa-, and post-PHV. Further research is required to determine the effectiveness of this training method in long-term athletic development programmes.

ABSTRACTAccessibility of the genomic regulatory information is largely controlled by the nucleosome-organizing activity of transcription factors (TFs). Whereas stimulus-induced TFs bind to genomic regions that are maintained accessible by lineage-determining TFs, they also increase accessibility of thousands of cis-regulatory elements. Nucleosome remodeling events underlying such changes and their interplay with basal positioning are unknown. Here, we devised a novel quantitative framework discriminating different types of nucleosome remodeling events in micrococcal nuclease ChIP-seq datasets and used it to analyze nucleosome dynamics at stimulus-regulated cis-regulatory elements. At enhancers, remodeling preferentially affected poorly positioned nucleosomes while sparing well-positioned nucleosomes flanking the enhancer core, indicating that inducible TFs do not suffice to overrule basal nucleosomal organization maintained by lineage-determining TFs. Remodeling events appeared to be combinatorially driven by multiple TFs, with distinct TFs showing however different remodeling efficiencies. Overall, these data provide a systematic view of the impact of stimulation on nucleosome organization and genome accessibility in mammalian cells.

Background: Micronutrient deficiencies largely affect pediatric population worldwide. In India, pediatric category is more prone to iron deficiency, the most common micronutrient deficiency disorder which produces haematological as well as non-hematological disturbances. This study aimed to identify the impact of iron deficiency on cognitive function and anthropometric changes in pediatric populations.Methods: A hospital based, prospective observational study was conducted at Department of Pediatrics in Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital, 127 participants were enrolled in this study. BKT kit of Intelligence, Electronic weighing machine, Stadiometer, BMI Calculator by CDC guidelines and patient’s haemoglobin values were used in this study.Results: Out of 127 patients, 66 patients had iron deficiency with anemia and remaining 61 had iron deficiency without anemia. Cognitive behaviour was assessed based on the norms and majority were under the category- dull average (52 patients) followed by average (45 patients) and other’s had single digit patients. Growth charts of Indian Academy of Pediatrics were used to assess anthropometric characteristics and majority were in the underweight category (61.4%) followed by average category (38.6 %).Conclusions: Low cognitive scores and underweight were found in participants with low haemoglobin levels. Hence, our study provides convincing evidence that iron plays a vital role in the cognition, motor and physical growth. Awareness about the importance of iron and the health issues associated with its deficiency was also provided to the participants.

Leaf litter plays a major role in carbon and nutrient cycling, as well as in fueling food webs. The chemical composition of a leaf may directly and indirectly influence decomposition rates by influencing rates of biological reactions and by influencing the accumulation of soil organic carbon content, respectively. This study aimed to assess the impact of the chemical composition of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex A. Juss.) Muell. Arg.) leaves on various soil properties of different ages of rubber (4–5, 11–12, and 22–23 year-old). Synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (Sr-FTIR) was utilized for analyzing the chemical composition of plant leaves. The Sr-FTIR bands illustrated that the epidermis of rubber leaves from 4–5-year-old trees was found to contain a high quantity of polysaccharides while mesophyll from 22–23-year-old trees had a large number of polysaccharides. The change in soil properties in the older rubber plantation could be attributed to its chemical composition. The change in soil properties across all tree ages, i.e., increased litter and organic carbon content, was a relatively strong driver of soil biota evolution. The aliphatic of C-H in the leaves showed high correlation with soil organic carbon (SOC) and permanganate-oxidizable C (POXC) from 22–23 year-old trees. This study shows the differences in the organic chemical composition of leaves that are consequential to soil organic carbon.

BackgroundThis study assessed trends in healthcare utilisation in relation to the implementation of an economic policy in India wherein 500 and 1000 rupee notes were demonetised.MethodsIn this ambidirectional observational study of private not-for-profit hospitals, data on hospital outpatient and inpatient numbers, surgeries, emergency department (ED) visits, obstetric admissions and mortality were obtained for pre-demonetisation (September/October 2016), early (November/December 2016) and late demonetisation (January/February 2017), and post-demonetisation periods (March/April 2017) and compared with the control period (2015–2016) from 11 centres (three tertiary hospitals; eight secondary). A Bayesian regression analysis was performed to adjust for seasonal (winter) effect. Monthly financial data, including the proportion of cash versus non-cash transactions, were collected.FindingsOverall, at the pooled all-hospital level, Bayesian analysis showed non-significant increase in outpatients (535.4, 95% CI −7097 to 8116) and decrease in deaths (–6.3 per 1000 inpatients, 95% CI −15.45 to 2.75) and a significant decrease in inpatients (−145.6, 95% CI −286.4 to −10.63) during demonetisation. Analysis at the level of secondary and tertiary hospitals showed a variable effect. For individual hospitals, after adjusting for the seasonal effect, some hospitals observed a significant reduction in outpatient (n=2) and inpatient (n=3) numbers, ED visits (n=4) and mortality (n=2) during demonetisation, while others reported significantly increased outpatient numbers (n=3) and ED visits (n=2). Deliveries remained unchanged during demonetisation in the hospitals that provided the service. There was no significant reduction in hospital incomes during demonetisation. In tertiary hospitals, there was a significant increase in non-cash component of transactions from 35% to 60% (p=0.02) that persisted beyond the demonetisation period.ConclusionsThe effect of demonetisation on healthcare utilisation was variable. Some hospitals witnessed a significant reduction in utilisation in some areas, while others reported increased utilisation. There was an increase in non-cash transactions that persisted beyond the period of demonetisation.

Statistical analysis is becoming much more widely used in conjunction with radiocarbon dating. In this paper I discuss the impact of Bayesian analysis (using computer programs such as OxCal) on archaeological research. In addition to simple analysis, the method has implications for the planning of dating projects and the assessment of the reliability of dates in their context.A new formalism for describing chronological models is introduced here: the Chronological Query Language (CQL), an extension of the model definitions found in the program OxCal.New methods of Bayesian analysis can be used to overcome some of the inherent biases in the uncertainty estimates of scientific dating methods. Most of these methods, including 14C, uranium series and thermoluminescence (TL), tend to favor some calendar dates over others. 14C calibration overcomes the problem where this is possible, but a Bayesian approach can be used more generally.

Abstract A consistent risk for soybean (Glycine max L.) production is the impact of drought on growth and yield. Canopy temperature (CT) is an indirect measure of transpiration rate and stomatal conductance and may be valuable in distinguishing differences among genotypes in response to drought. The objective of this study was to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with CT using thermal infrared imaging in a population of recombinant inbred lines developed from a cross between KS4895 and Jackson. Heritability of CT was 35% when estimated across environments. QTL analysis identified 11 loci for CT distributed on eight chromosomes that individually explained between 4.6 and 12.3% of the phenotypic variation. The locus on Gm11 was identified in two individual environments and across environments and explained the highest proportion of phenotypic variation (9.3% to 11.5%) in CT. Several of these CT loci coincided with the genomic regions from previous studies associated with canopy wilting, canopy temperature, water use efficiency, and other morpho-physiological traits related with drought tolerance. Candidate genes with biological function related to transpiration, root development, and signal transduction underlie these putative CT loci. These genomic regions may be important resources in soybean breeding programs to improve tolerance to drought.

The management involving stem cell (SC) therapy along with physiotherapy offers tremendous chance for patients after spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, etc. However, there are still only a limited number of reports assessing the impact of stem cells (SCs) on the rehabilitation process and/or the results of the simultaneous use of SC and rehabilitation. Additionally, since there is still not enough convincing evidence about the effect of SCT on humans, e.g., in stroke, there have been no studies conducted concerning rehabilitation program formation and expected outcomes. It has been shown that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs) transplantation in rats combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) can promote the functional recovery of hind limbs after SCI. An anti-inflammatory effect has been shown. One case study showed that, after the simultaneous use of SCT and rehabilitation, an SCI patient progressed from ASIA Grade A to ASIA Grade C. Such promising data in the case of complete tetraplegia could be a breakthrough in the treatment of neurologic disorders in humans. Although SCT appears as a promising method for the treatment of neurological conditions, e.g., complete tetraplegia, much work should be done towards the development of rehabilitation protocols.
