The present study sought to clarify if being conscious of water intake (CWI) is associated with sufficient non-alcohol drink (NAD) intake. We used data of healthy participants without diabetes, aged 40–74 years, in the Kobe Orthopedic and Biomedical Epidemiologic (KOBE) study. The association between being CWI and NAD intake was evaluated by multivariate linear regression analyses after adjusting for age, sex, surveyed months (seasons), alcohol drinking, health-awareness life habits, socioeconomic factors, serum osmolarity, estimated daily salt intake, and reasons for NAD intake. Among 988 (698 women and 290 men) participants eligible for the present analyses, 644 participants (65.2%) were CWI and 344 participants (34.8%) were not CWI (non-CWI). The most popular reason for being CWI was to avoid heat stroke in summer and to prevent ischemic cerebral stroke in winter. The CWI group took more NAD, especially decaffeinated beverages, than the non-CWI group (1846.7 ± 675.1 mL/day vs. 1478.0 ± 636.3 ml/day, p < 0.001). There was a significant association between being CWI and NAD intake in multivariate linear regression analyses ever after adjusting for the relevant variables (β = 318.1, p < 0.001). These findings demonstrated CWI, regardless of the reasons and the seasons, was associated with high NAD intake in Japanese healthy population.

Abstract Background and aim Few studies have clarified the seasonal and age-related change of serum osmolarity and water intake, which is thought to be associated with heat stroke and ischemic stroke. We investigated the association between them in a healthy population. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using database from Kobe Orthopedic and Biomedical Epidemiologic (KOBE) Study. Among 1138 healthy Japanese participants in the baseline survey, 1010 (women 704 and men 306) participants were eligible for the present study. Daily non-alcohol drink (NAD) intake was estimated according to food frequency questionnaire. Alcohol beverage and water in the meal or soup were excluded from the counting. Serum osmolarity (Osm/L) was calculated by Worthley’s formula: 2 (serum sodium (mEq/L)) + (blood urea nitrogen (mg/dL))/2.8 + (glucose (mg/dL))/18. The seasons the surveys were conducted were categorized into 4 groups, March-May (Spring), June-August (Summer), September-November (Autumn), and December-February (Winter). The association between serum osmolarity and daily NAD intake was analyzed using linear regression models. Results The seasonal change was observed in the serum osmolarity and daily NAD intake; serum osmolarity increased in spring and summer and daily NAD intake increased in summer. The serum osmolarity increased by aging in any seasons, while daily water intake didn’t. There was no significant association observed between serum osmolarity and the daily NAD intake, even after adjusting for sex, age, and season. Conclusions Serum osmolarity showed seasonal and age-related changes, but the serum osmolarity in subjects who had the daily habit of high NAD intake was not necessarily low. Key messages Serum osmolarity increased by aging and in spring and summer. Serum osmolarity was not associated with non-alcohol drink intake.

Abstract Background: Improving the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of adolescent girls is one of the primary agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adequate and accurate knowledge, favorable attitude, safe behavior, and regular practice contribute to the adolescent girls’ SRH, maternal, and child health. In the background, this study aims to explore the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of SRH among college-going older adolescent girls in Chittagong district, Bangladesh. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in four colleges among the older adolescent girls age group of 16-17 (N = 792) attending a higher secondary grade in Chittagong district. Data were collected using a structured and self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analyses were used to summarize the SRH-related KAP and identify the associated factors, respectively. Results: 62% of study participants had the awareness that both physical and psychological changes occur in the adolescence period, while only 36% knew that menstruation is not a disease. Besides, only 30% of adolescent girls were informed about taking birth control has no adverse effect on the sexual relationship of a couple. Moreover, only 40% of students were learned that HIV could not be spread through the mosquito and flea, whereas only 25% knew that transmission of HIV is unlikely from an infected person’s coughing and sneezing. Of older adolescent girls, 35% disagreed perfectly whether sexual education can lead to more sexual activity. Besides, more or less 20% of participants opined that adolescent girls should refrain from going outside even to the school, entering into the kitchen, touching anyone, brushing hair, and see in the mirror. Moreover, 52% of adolescent girls wanted to learn more details about SRH, while 48% felt timid and afraid of their puberty changes. Besides, 62.5% of adolescent girls reported their using cloth during the menstrual cycle instead of the sanitary pad. Standardized coefficients beta (β) and p value < .05 in linear regression analyses explored that adolescent girls’ study of science, urban residence, reading or watching SRH contents on the mass media appeared as the more significant predictors for outcome variables. Conclusion: Many problems related to SRH exist among older adolescent girls in Bangladesh, such as behaviors and social constraints associated with menstruation, myths, and assumptions, recognition of the value of awareness and knowledge of reproductive health. Therefore, strengthening SRH-related comprehensive education programs incorporating into the curriculum, effective use of mass media, and supplying behavioral change communication materials are essential.

Purpose. To analyze and compare corneal structural and biomechanical properties, characterized by corneal hysteresis (CH) and resistance factor (CRF), between patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and determine the main ocular variables that influence them. Methods. Sixty diabetic and 48 age- and sex-matched non-DM patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The DM group was analyzed according to DM duration (<or ≥ 10 years), HbA1c levels (<or ≥ 7%), and presence of retinopathy. CH and CRF were evaluated using the Ocular Response Analyzer® (ORA). Central corneal thickness (CCT) was determined by Scheimpflug tomography (Pentacam® HR). Intraocular pressure was obtained with ORA (IOPcc) and Goldmann applanation tonometry (IOP-GAT). Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between demographical, clinical, and ocular variables with the biomechanical properties. Results. There were no statistically significant differences in the CH and the CRF between DM and non-DM groups (p=0.637 and p=0.439, respectively). Also, there was no statistical difference between groups for the CCT, IOPcc, or IOP-GAT. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that CH was positively associated with CCT (p<0.001) and negatively associated with IOPcc (p<0.001), while CRF was positively associated with CCT (p<0.001) and IOPcc (p=0.014). Conclusion. The CCT and IOPcc were found to be the main parameters that affect corneal biomechanical properties both in diabetics and controls. In this study, there was no significant effect of DM type 2 on corneal biomechanics.

Abstract Background Illicit use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is frequently observed in men and is associated with subsequent testosterone deficiency although the long-term effect on gonadal function is still unclear. Serum insulin-like factor 3 (INSL3) has been suggested to be a superior biomarker of Leydig cell secretory capacity compared to testosterone. The objective of this study was to investigate serum INSL3 concentrations in AAS users. Methods This community-based cross-sectional study included men aged 18 – 50 years, involved in recreational strength training and allocated to one of three groups: never-AAS users as controls (n=44), current (n=46) or former AAS users (n=42) with an average duration since AAS cessation of 32 (23;45) months. Results Serum INSL3 was lower in current AAS users and former AAS users than in controls, median (IQR), 0.04 (ND – 0.07) and 0.39 (0.24 – 0.62) versus 0.59 (0.45 – 0.72) µg/L, P&lt;0.001. Former AAS users exhibited lower serum INSL3 levels than controls in a multivariate linear regression even after adjusting for serum total testosterone and other relevant confounders, (B) (95%CI), -0.16 (-0.29;-0.04) µg/L, P=0.011. INSL3 and total testosterone were not associated in the model, P=0.821. Longer accumulated AAS duration (log2) was associated with lower serum INSL3 in former AAS users, (B) (95%CI), -0.08 (-0.14;-0.01), P=0.022. Serum INSL3, but not inhibin B or testosterone, was associated with testicular size in a multivariate linear regression, (B) (95%CI); 4.7 (0.5 ; 8.9), P=0.030. Conclusions Serum INSL3 is reduced years following AAS cessation in men, independently of testosterone, suggesting persistently impaired Leydig cell capacity.

Abstract Background and Aims Hyponatremia is associated with aggravation of inflammation in COVID-19 patients. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has used longitudinal data and investigated the association between hyponatremia and COVID-19. Therefore, we analyzed COVID-19 patients’ changes in serum sodium (Na) levels from admission to discharge. Method We conducted a retrospective, single-center, observational cohort study, involving adult COVID-19 patients who were admitted to Japan Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital between April 1 and May 31, 2020. Serum Na level of &lt; 135 mEq/L was defined as hyponatremia, 135–145 mEq/L as normonatremia, and &gt; 145 mEq/L as hypernatremia. Inflammation was assessed by serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations between hyponatremia at admission and need for oxygen or death during hospitalization. A comparison of serum Na levels at admission and discharge was tested using a paired t-test. Cross-sectional associations between serum Na and CRP levels at admission or days from onset to admission were analyzed using multivariate linear regression analyses. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve incorporated in one of these multivariate linear regression analyses was used to identify when serum Na levels were the lowest. In addition, we employed a mixed-effect model to examine the longitudinal association between changes in serum Na and CRP levels during hospitalization. Results Ninety-eight patients were enrolled, of whom 53 (54%) were male and 39 (40%) had a smoking history. Mean (SD) or median (IQR) of age, eGFR, body mass index (BMI), serum Na, and CRP at admission were 50 (17) years, 82 (20) mL/min/1.73m2, 23.3 (5.5), 138 (3.7) mEq/L, and 1.8 (0.2–6.0) mg/dL, respectively. It took an mean of 8.9 (3.7) days from onset to admission due to social disruption. According to government policies, during observation period, patients diagnosed with COVID-19 have to be hospitalized, even if they have minor or improving clinical symptoms. At admission, hyponatremia was observed in 11 (11.2%) patients; the rest of the patients had normonatremia. Twenty-seven (27.6%) patients received oxygen, and 4 (4.1%) died during hospitalization. Hyponatremia at admission was significantly associated with the need for oxygen (odds ratio: 41.2; 95% CI: 4.9–344; P=0.001) and death (odds ratio: 32.3; 95% CI: 3.0-347; P=0.004). Irrespective of hyponatremia at admission, the serum Na levels at discharge were significantly higher than those at admission (Fig. 1). In both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, serum Na levels were negatively associated with serum CRP levels after adjustment for age, sex, eGFR, BMI, and smoking history (P&lt;0.001), which suggests that serum Na levels may reflect the activity of COVID-19. Furthermore, the serum Na levels at admission were positively associated with days from onset to admission after adjustment for age, sex, eGFR, BMI, smoking history, and serum CRP levels (P=0.035), and the RCS curve showed that the serum Na levels tended to be the lowest around the 7th day after onset (Fig. 2). Conclusion Hyponatremia in COVID-19 may occur secondarily, and a condition called “COVID-19-induced hyponatremia” might exist.

Abstract Background While leisure time physical activity (LTPA) has been linked to a myriad of health benefits, many individuals do not get enough LTPA. In this study, we investigated how caregiving responsibilities (for children, adults under age 65, and adults over age 65) affected components of LTPA including exercise, walking, gardening, and housework in a population of manufacturing workers. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed among 857 manufacturing workers who completed a survey assessing caregiving responsibility and LTPA. Linear regression analyses were used to test for associations between caregiving and LTPA. Results We observed that caregivers for children reported significantly (p < 0.05) fewer hours of exercise and walking, but more hours of housework, than non-caregivers. We observed no association between caregiving for adults under age 65 or adults aged 65 and older and exercise or walking. Caring for adults under age 65 was associated with a significant (p < 0.05) increase in hours spent gardening, and caring for adults aged 65 and older was associated with a significant increase in hours spent performing housework. Conclusions We identified associations between caregiving and physical activity in a population of manufacturing workers. Our results support the development of targeted interventions to promote health in working caregiver populations.

Abstract Background Lipid accumulation product (LAP) is a new index based on a combination of waist circumference (WC) and serum triglycerides (TG) reflecting lipid accumulation. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to explore whether LAP was independently associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods A cross-sectional study of 317 T2DM patients who underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) tests was conducted. The clinical data between non-OSA group and OSA group were compared. Multivariable linear regression and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine associations of LAP, with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and OSA. Results Among 317 patients, 219 (69.1%) were men, and the mean ages (±SD) were 51.4 (±13.5) years for men and 54.6 (±15.1) years for women (p = 0.067). The prevalence rates of OSA were 63.0% for men and 68.4% for women (p = 0.357). LAP (log-transformed) was significantly correlated with AHI (log-transformed), with the Pearson’s correlation coefficient of 0.170 (p = 0.002). With adjustment for potential confounding factors, multivariate linear regression analyses showed the association of LAP with AHI was not statistically significant, with the adjusted linear regression coefficients (95% CI) of per SD increase of LAP for AHI (log-transformed) was 0.092 (− 0.011–0.194, p = 0.080). Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed LAP was significantly associated with increased risk of OSA, with the adjusted OR (95%CI) of per SD increase of LAP of 1.639 (1.032–2.604, p = 0.036). However, as constituents of LAP, neither TG nor WC was significantly associated with AHI and OSA. Conclusion LAP was independently associated with OSA and might be used as a potential OSA risk marker in T2DM patients, beyond the general index of obesity.

AbstractObjective:To examine the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and serum liver enzymes in a representative sample of US adults.Design:The cross-sectional study sample consisted of 24 229 adults with data on serum 25(OH)D levels and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transaminase (GGT) concentrations, in addition to data on other potential confounders. Multivariate logistic regression and linear regression were applied to assess the associations between serum 25(OH)D levels and ALT, AST, ALP and GGT concentrations.Setting:The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001–2006.Participants:The cross-sectional study sample consisted of 24 229 adults.Results:We found a significant association between low serum 25(OH)D levels (<30 nmol/l) and ALP levels in all participants (OR 2·67; 95 % CI 1·98, 3·59; P < 0·001), a confirmed healthy population (OR 3·02; 95 % CI 2·25, 4·07; P < 0·001) and individuals with viral hepatitis (OR 2·87; 95 % CI 1·52, 5·44; P = 0·006) compared with those who had normal 25(OH)D levels (>50 nmol/l). Moreover, in both the logistic regression and linear regression, the associations between 25(OH)D levels and ALP levels were stronger in the subgroups with obesity. No association was present between ALT, AST or GGT levels and serum 25(OH)D levels in this population.Conclusions:The results of the present study provide epidemiological evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with liver ALP levels in humans. This finding suggests a potential adverse effect of low 25(OH)D levels on human liver function. However, the underlying mechanisms still need further investigation.

Abstract Background: Skin diseases impair patients’ quality of life (QoL). Psoriasis is of particular concern because it affects multiple facets of patients’ lives.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether having psoriasis was associated with the more severe QoL impairment compared with the other 12 skin diseases, based on the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI).Methods: This multicenter observational cross-sectional study was conducted in 9centers in China. Socio-demographic variables and health history were collected with a standardized form questionnaire. QoL was measured by the DLQI. DLQI scores were compared between patients with psoriasis and without psoriasis using univariate analysis. Then multivariate linear regression was used to related QoL to groups (psoriasis vs. non psoriasis), clinical and socio-demographic characteristics.Results: Of 8,339 included dermatological participants, 1,310 (15.7%) had psoriasis, and 7,029 (84.3%) did not. The QoL of patients with psoriasis was lower than that of patients without psoriasis based on the DLQI score (11.20 ± 7.37 vs 8.12 ± 6.26, P < 0.05). The results of multivariate linear regression indicated the same results when adjusting clinical and socio-demographic characteristics.Conclusion: Patients with psoriasis experience more quality of life impairment than patients without psoriasis. More attention should be paid to patients with psoriasis in dermatological health policy decision.

Abstract Background To date, the association of serum macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and serum adipokines with lupus nephritis is controversial. Objective To assess the utility of serum MIF, leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels as markers of proteinuria and renal dysfunction in lupus nephritis. Methods Cross-sectional study including 196 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and 52 healthy controls (HCs). Disease activity was assessed by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Renal SLE involvement was investigated by renal-SLEDAI. MIF, adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels were quantified by ELISA. We assessed the correlations of quantitative variables by Spearman correlation (rs). Multivariable linear regression adjusted the variables associated with the severity of proteinuria. Results SLE patients had higher MIF (p = 0.02) and adiponectin (p < 0.001) than HCs. Patients with renal SLE involvement (n = 43) had higher adiponectin (19.0 vs 13.3 μg/mL, p = 0.002) and resistin (10.7 vs 8.9 ng/mL, p = 0.01) than patients with non-renal SLE (n = 153). Proteinuria correlated with high adiponectin (rs = 0.19, p < 0.009) and resistin (rs = 0.26, p < 0.001). MIF (rs = 0.27, p = 0.04). Resistin correlated with increased creatinine (rs = 0.18, p = 0.02). High renal-SLEDAI correlated with adiponectin (rs = 0.21, p = 0.004). Multiple linear regression showed that elevated adiponectin (p = 0.02), younger age (p = 0.04) and low MIF (p = 0.02) were associated with the severity of proteinuria. Low MIF and high adiponectin levels interacted to explain the association with the severity of proteinuria (R2 = 0.41). Conclusions High adiponectin combined with low MIF concentrations int+eract to explain the severity of proteinuria in renal SLE. These findings highlight the relevance of adiponectin, resistin and MIF as markers of LN.
