Background: Construction activities not only provide the necessary conditions for citizens to live, but also cause fatal accidents. Methods: This study aimed to reveal the characteristics of fatal accidents in the construction industry in China based on statistical data. From 2010 to 2019, there were 6005 fatal accidents in China’s construction industry causing 7275 deaths. The important features of these fatal accidents, such as the type, time of occurrence, site location, severity, and geographical region of the accident, were carefully analyzed. Results: There were 258 major and severe construction accidents causing 1037 deaths, accounting for 4.3% and 14.25% of the total number of construction accidents and deaths in this period, respectively. As an important finding, more deaths occurred in August and on Mondays. The greatest number of construction accidents took place along openings and edges, accounting for 22.9% of all fatal accidents. Taking into account their economic development level and number of employees, Qinghai and Hainan experienced a higher mortality rate than Jiangsu. Falls from a high place were the dominant type of construction accident, accounting for 51.66% of all accidents. However, collapses were the primary type of major and severe construction accident, accounting for 60.09% of such accidents. The predicted number of construction deaths in 2020 is 887 according to the GM(1,1) model. Corresponding safety measures should be adopted to improve the working environment of the construction industry. Implications: The implications of these results with respect to the characteristics of construction accidents can be regarded as the foundation for accident prevention in practice.

Reported fatal accidents in Malaysia construction industry contributed the highest number among other industries since 2009 until 2018. These statistics are alarming and elucidate the need to conduct scientific research to find the solution to solve the problem. Safety and health issues remain critical to the construction industry due to its working environment and the complexity of working practices. To prevent an accident, hazard identification is essential to construction safety management because unidentified hazards present the most unmanageable risks. Therefore, this research is conducted to help in reducing occupational accidents in the construction industry, and it can be considered worthy. This study aims to understand the triggering events, and their factors leading to fatal accidents are of significant input. The obtained data were analyzed using a statistical analysis program. Data collections of 139 numbers of respondents have been conducted in six different construction sites in east Malaysia. The result showed that there is a correlation between worker's perspective on safety management in the construction site and accident that can lead to a more fatality rate compared to other sectors. The corresponding recommendations are ultimately put forward as fatal accident prevention in construction activities. The patterns found in this paper can contribute valuable direction for formulating accident prevention strategies. In future research, reporting of an accident and near misses are essential to be further explored.

The article presents an analysis and evaluation of the accident rate in selected European Union countries. On the basis of available statistical data, the analysis of accidents in various sectors of the European Union economy was carried out. Afterwards, a ranking of countries regarding accidents in the construction industry was developed. For the selected representative countries, analysis of changes in the indicators which characterize the accident rate during the period between 2008 and 2012 was carried out. Conclusions resulting from the conducted research were formulated.

Background: Construction industry chiefly depends on the cement. The constituents in the cement have various health effects in the exposed group. The present study focused to realize the health effects of cement exposure and duration of exposure.Methods: The sample size was 831 male workers. The labourers included were construction workers (masons, helpers and concrete mixers) and cement loading and unloading workers. They were categorized in to five groups which were 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24 and 25+ years based on the duration of exposure to cement. Health hazards among these labourers were categorized in to lung function impairment symptoms, cutaneous symptoms and other symptoms.Results: High frequency of respiratory tract ailments (persistent cough 54%, breathlessness 47%) was observed among loading workers as they were handling cement dust. Burning was the most observed one in concrete mixer (70%), hair loss and change in hair colour was observed in 60% of all categories of workers. Skin related ailments were more prevalent among masons, helpers and concrete mixers.Conclusions: The frequency symptoms had correlation with their nature of work in the construction industry. Prolonged exposure to hazardous substances will decline the efficiency of labourers by malfunctioning their physiological functions. Proper awareness about the hazardous substances and well taken precautions among these labours can enhance their efficacy and wellbeing.

The problem of choosing a fishing vessel is considered. Statistical data from various countries are presented, confirming the increased level of professional risk for members of the crews of small vessels. A relation that relates the frequency of fatal accidents among fishermen with the displacement of fishing vessels is obtained. The necessity of increasing the level of safety of the solutions used in the design of fishing schemes, fishing equipment and fishing gears is indicated.

The article classifies Polish voivodeships into appropriate groups with a similar level of occupational safety in the construction industry. The basis for the adopted classification was statistical data published by the Central Statistical Office regarding population, employment in the construction industry, the value of construction production and the number of occupational accidents. The conducted research allowed a logical and correct, in terms of content, division of the Polish territory to be made, taking into account the aspect of occupational safety in the construction industry. Statistica software and cluster analysis were used to solve the problem.

The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, its aim is to ascertain the major aspects of job satisfaction for South Australian construction workers including the main ramifications of job satisfaction in the working environment. Secondly, it investigates the influence of key age-related factors i.e. chronological age, organisational age and length of service on major aspects of job satisfaction. The collected data for this study comprised 72 questionnaires completed by construction practitioners working at operational levels in the South Australian construction industry. Based on the responses from the target group, this study deduced that job dissatisfaction was predominantly related to the adverse impact on personal health and quality of life. In addition, indifference and the perception of dejection in the workplace are the main consequences of low levels of job satisfaction. Inferential analyses revealed that none of the age-related factors could significantly affect the major aspects of job satisfaction of construction workers in the South Australian context. The study concludes with providing practical suggestions for redesigning human resources practices for increasing the level of job satisfaction within the South Australian construction industry.Keywords: Job satisfaction, workers, age, construction industry, South Australia

Construction industry is a main industry in national economy, Chinese construction industry has made huge achievement, but the developments between different provinces in China are imbalanced. To compare the different efficiencies between them, data envelopment analysis and an important extended means of DEA were introduced, compared and applied in empirical analysis of Chinese construction industry efficiency between different provinces based on statistical data. Then some conclusions and advices were reached in the end.

The construction sector is widely recognized as having the most hazardous working environment among the various business sectors, and many research studies have focused on injury prevention strategies for use on construction sites. The risk-based theory emphasizes the analysis of accident causes extracted from accident reports to understand, predict, and prevent the occurrence of construction accidents. The first step in the analysis is to classify the incidents from a massive number of reports into different cause categories, a task which is usually performed on a manual basis by domain experts. The research described in this paper proposes a convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (C-BiLSTM)-based method to automatically classify construction accident reports. The proposed approach was applied on a dataset of construction accident narratives obtained from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration website, and the results indicate that this model performs better than some of the classic machine learning models commonly used in classification tasks, including support vector machine (SVM), naïve Bayes (NB), and logistic regression (LR). The results of this study can help safety managers to develop risk management strategies.

The metallurgical industry is a significant component of the national economy. The main purpose of this study was to establish a composite risk analysis method for fatal accidents in the metallurgical industry. We collected 152 fatal accidents in the Chinese metallurgical industry from 2001 to 2018, including 141 major accidents, 10 severe accidents, and 1 extraordinarily severe accident, together resulting in 731 deaths. Different from traffic or chemical industry accidents, most of the accidents in the metallurgical industry are poisoning and asphyxiation accidents, which account for 40% of the total number of fatal accidents. As the original statistical data of fatal accidents in the metallurgical industry have irregular fluctuations, the traditional prediction methods, such as linear or quadratic regression models, cannot be used to predict their future characteristics. To overcome this issue, the grey interval predicting method and the GM(1,1) model of grey system theory are introduced to predict the future characteristics of fatal accidents in the metallurgical industry. Different from a fault tree analysis or event tree analysis, the bow tie model integrates the basic causes, possible consequences, and corresponding safety measures of an accident in a transparent diagram. In this study, the bow tie model was used to identify the causes and consequences of fatal accidents in the metallurgical industry; then, corresponding safety measures were adopted to reduce the risk.
