Vitamin D affects both innate and adaptive immunity. Most of the effects of vitamin D on innate immunity are anti-inflammatory. In monocytes/macrophages, vitamin D suppresses the production of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D concentration and selected cytokines—IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β, which are hemogram parameters for professional football players. We enrolled 41 Polish premier league soccer players. The mean age, career duration, and VO2max were, respectively: 22.7 ± 5.3 years, 14.7 ± 4.5 years, and 55.8 ± 4.0 mL/kg/min. Serum levels of 25(OH)D were measured by electrochemiluminescence (ECLIA) using the Elecsys system (Roche, Switzerland). Serum levels of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α were measured by ELISA (R&D Systems, Minneapolis). Blood count with smear was measured on a Sysmex XT-4000i analyzer (Sysmex Corporation, Japan). Our study showed decreased serum 25(OH)D levels in 78% of the professional players. We found a significant negative correlation between 25(OH)D levels and TNF-α and LYMPH (%). The results also demonstrated a statistically significant positive correlation between vitamin D levels and NEUTH (%), NEUTH (tys/µL), and EOS (tys/µL). Based on the results of our study, we concluded that football players from Poland are not protected against vitamin D insufficiency in winter months. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency may be associated with an increased pro-inflammatory risk in well-trained athletes.

Abstract Objectives Advanced Glycation End Products, (AGEs) and their soluble receptor (sRAGE) have been implicated in the development of complications and mortality among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). There is limited information on the relationship between AGEs and sRAGE and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in minority groups, who have a higher burden of T2D. The relationship between AGEs and sRAGE and CVD risks in adults with T2D and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency was assessed in a minority population. Methods A cross sectional study of Hispanics and African Americans with T2D (n = 64, 41 women and 23 men, mean age = 54 ± 9) recruited from two clinics in Miami Dade. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), weight and height measurement and serum lipid profile were completed. ELISA kits were used to assess serum levels of AGEs (Biotang Inc/TSZ Elisa, Waltham, MA, USA) and sRAGE (Biotang Inc/TSZ Elisa, Waltham, MA, USA). Multiple linear regression was used to assess association between AGEs, sRAGE and CVD risks. Results A negative and significant association between AGEs and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)(B = −0.551, P = 0.029) was found. The relationship between AGEs and HDL-C persisted after adjusting for covariates (P < 0.05). sRAGE was significantly associated with SBP (B = 0.015, P = 0.025) and diastolic blood pressure DBP (B = 0.0271, P = 0.037). Results loss significance when association between sRAGE and DBP and SBP were adjusted for covariates such as age, body mass index (BMI), smoking and alcohol intake. Conclusions Our results suggest that AGEs and sRAGE are related to markers of cardiovascular risk such as HDL-C, SBP and DBP in the study population of African Americans and Hispanics with T2D and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency. Measures on reducing serum levels of AGEs and improving sRAGE and vitamin D are warranted in these populations for risk reduction of CVD. Vitamin D (25(OH)D) insufficiency and deficiency are highly prevalent in adult soccer players and can exceed 80% even in regions with high insolation; however, the treatment of this condition is often complicated. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in youth Russian soccer players and the efficacy of its treatment. Participants were 131 young male football players (age 15.6 ± 2.4 years). Low vitamin D levels (below 30 ng/mL) were observed in 42.8% of the analyzed participants. These athletes were split in two groups composed of persons with vitamin D deficiency (serum vitamin D below 21 ng/mL) and insufficiency (serum vitamin D in range of 21–29 ng/mL). A dietary supplement of 5000 IU cholecalciferol per day was administered for two months. After the treatment, an average 92% increase in vitamin D concentration was observed (before treatment—19.7 ± 5.4 ng/mL, after treatment—34.7 ± 8.6 ng/mL, p<0.001) and 74% of the post-treatment values were within the reference range (30–60 ng/mL). Serum concentration of vitamin D increased by 200% ± 98% (p<0.001) during the first month of treatment with vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency being successfully treated in 83% of the football players. In summary, the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency was high in young Russian soccer players. Furthermore, it was indicated that the daily usage of cholecalciferol in a dose 5000 IU was an effective and well-tolerated treatment for vitamin D insufficiency. No linear dependency between the duration of treatment and increase in vitamin 25(OH)D concentration was observed.

Optimal vitamin D status has commonly been defined as the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) at which parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations would be maximally suppressed, represented by an observed minimum plateau. Previous findings indicate a large variation in this plateau, with values ranging from <30 nmol/L up to 100 nmol/L. This disparity in values might be explained by differences in study design and methodology, ethnicity, age, gender and latitude. This study aimed to investigate the concentration of 25(OH)D at which PTH concentrations were suppressed in Brazilian women living in opposite latitudes (high vs. low: i.e., UK and Brazil), during wintertime. Using data from the D-SOL study (Interaction between Vitamin D Supplementation and Sunlight Exposure in Women Living in Opposite Latitudes), the association between 25(OH)D status and PTH levels were examined in 135 Brazilian women (56 living in England and 79 living in Brazil, aged 20–59 years old). Mean PTH concentrations for Brazilian women with vitamin D deficiency (<25 nmol/L) were significantly higher compared to those with vitamin D insufficiency (25–49.9 nmol/L) (p < 0.01), vitamin D adequacy (50–74.9 nmol/L) (p < 0.01) and those with optimal vitamin D status (>75 nmol/L) (p < 0.001). Regression modelling was used to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D and PTH for the sample as a whole and for each group separately. A cubic model was statistically significant for the total sample (p < 0.001), whereas a linear model presented the best fit for Brazilian women living in England (p = 0.04) and there were no statistically significant models fitted for Brazilian women living in Brazil. The cubic model suggests that 25(OH)D concentrations above 70–80 nmol/L are optimal to suppress the parathyroid gland in Brazilian women. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between 25(OH)D and PTH in populations living in a low latitude location and are of great relevance for discussions regarding the estimation of optimal cut-offs for vitamin D levels in the Brazilian population as well as for other low latitude locations.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is one of the most important epidemiological events in the past 100 years has become, the consequences for public health and economic systems around the world. Vitamin D is an important micronutrient that has been reported to improve immunity and protect against respiratory diseases. In this study, we intend to review articles that examine the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D. Methods: This is a review that uses articles from studies published in 2020 on the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D in databases such as; Web of Science, Science Direct, SID, Magiran, Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords used included; serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, vitamin D, COVID-19, SARS-COV-2 and coronavirus 2. With this search, 32 articles were finally selected for this purpose and their results were reviewed Results: Of the 32 studies reviewed, only three showed no association between vitamin D levels in the blood and COVID-19 disease. Other studies had a relationship between the severity of the disease, mortality rate and length of hospital stay, in different age, gender and location groups. Conclusion: It seems that the level of vitamin D in the blood has a potential effect on COVID-19 disease. Checking the serum vitamin D levels and supplementation in people with hypovitaminosis D can be a good solution to reduce the complications and problems caused by COVID-19.

[Purpose] The aim of this review was to discuss the effects of vitamin D on physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and provide information on the field applications of vitamin D. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted to identify studies on vitamin D in athletes that assessed serum vitamin D levels, vitamin D and physical performance, vitamin D and musculoskeletal injuries, and practical guidelines for supplementation of vitamin D. [Results] Several studies reported that a high proportion of athletes had vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Low serum levels of vitamin D in athletes were more pronounced in winter than in other seasons, and indoor athletes had lower serum vitamin D levels than outdoor athletes. Low vitamin D levels have been demonstrated to have negative effects on muscle strength, power, and endurance; increase stress fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries; and affect acute muscle injuries and inflammation following high-intensity exercises. Therefore, periodic assessment and monitoring of vitamin D levels are necessary in athletes; the recommended serum level of 25(OH)D is > 32 ng/mL and the preferred level is > 40 ng/mL (-1). In those with low levels of vitamin D, exposure to sunlight and an improved diet or supplements may be helpful. Particularly, 2000–6000 IU of supplemental vitamin D3 can be consumed daily. [Conclusion] Vitamin D is a potential nutritional factor that can significantly affect physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. The importance and role of vitamin D in athletes should be emphasized, and the current levels of vitamin D should be assessed. Therefore, it is essential to periodically evaluate and monitor serum vitamin D levels in athletes.

Qatar has a high burden of chronic diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Low serum vitamin D levels have been implicated in the development and progression of a range of these chronic conditions. The prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency in the general population of Qatar has still not been investigated. The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review of published studies documenting the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency in the Qatari population. A search strategy was developed for online databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase and Embase Classic) between 1980 to the last week of August 2012, and bibliographies of the included studies were further searched for additional reports. Search terms used were QATAR and VITAMIN D. Studies reporting the serum levels of vitamin D in several Qatari sub-populations were identified. Weighted-average vitamin D serum levels and prevalence of low vitamin D status (&lt;75 nmol/L) were calculated. Subgroup analysis was carried out by age. The quality of each study was evaluated according to four criteria: national representativeness, representation of males and females, the sample size, and the sampling protocol. A total of 16 relevant publications were identified, and 8 of these (reporting from 7 unique studies) met our inclusion and exclusion criteria with a total number of 1,699 Qatari subjects. The pooled sample size weighted-average vitamin D concentration (±SD) was 45.3±14.3 nmol/L (95% CI: 44.6-46.0; range 29.2-66.9 nmol/L). The weighted-average prevalence of low vitamin D status was 90.4% (95% CI: 90.1-91.0; range 83%-91%). Age was inversely correlated with vitamin D levels and directly with its insufficiency/deficiency prevalence. There have only been a few studies on the prevalence of low vitamin D in Qatar a very high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency in Qatar that increases with age has been suggested. The present report underlines the need to develop a nationally representative study to further evaluate vitamin D status in Qatar. Given the growing evidence of the role of vitamin D in chronic disease, this study could help develop public health strategies for disease prevention in Qatar.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases that can lead to mortality, inability, and lower productivity levels. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum vitamin D level and cardiovascular risk factors and the severity of CAD after determining and eliminating the confounding effects of dietary patterns in male patients undergoing angiography. Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was carried out on 132 men undergoing angiography during 2017 and 2018. To this end, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) were completed for the patients. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and vitamin D levels were also investigated. Results: Serum vitamin D levels significantly decreased with an increase in CAD severity (p=0.001). Also, low serum levels led to the highest severity of CAD (p=0.005). However, there was no significant difference between patients with vitamin D deficiency with different degrees of CAD (p=0.084). Also, the highest percentage of individuals with normal serum levels of vitamin D was observed in the group without any blocked blood arteries (normal) (p=0.023). Conclusion: This study shows an inverse relationship between serum 25(OH) D level and the severity of CAD. Our data show that vitamin D plays an important role in preventing CAD. These findings could help design prospective studies and clinical trials on a wider scale to investigate the effects of vitamin D interventions in preventing the development of CAD.

Abstract Background The extraskeletal role of vitamin D is being increasingly recognized. This has important clinical implications, as vitamin D deficiency has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Vitamin D has proposed anti-inflammatory properties as recent data suggests that low vitamin D concentrations are associated with increased levels of inflammatory markers. Interleukin-37(IL-37) is an IL1 family cytokine discovered in recent years and has 5 different isoforms. As an immunosuppressive factor, IL-37 can suppress excessive immune response .IL37 plays a role in protecting the body against endotoxin shock, ischemia reperfusion injury, autoimmune diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, IL-37 has a potential antitumor effect. IL-37 and its receptors may serve as novel targets for the study, diagnosis, and treatment of immune-related diseases and tumors. Aim of the Work The aim of this study is to determine the relation between the level of interleukin-37 and 25-hydroxy Vitamin D among Ain Shams University medical students. Subjects and Methods The study was conducted at Clinical Pathology Department, Ain Shams University Hospitals. Ninety individuals, from medical students of Ain Shams University who participated in the Nutritional Assessment of Ain Shams University Medical Students (NAMESASU) Project, were selected to be in the study. The study included 2 groups: Group I: included 45 subjects selected from the NAMES-ASU project with deficient vitamin D serum levels. Group II: included 45 subjects selected from the NAMES-ASU project with sufficient vitamin D serum levels. Results There was a highly significant difference between the two groups regarding vitamin D levels. Serum IL-37 levels were significantly higher in group I subjects compared to group II subjects. No significant difference was observed between group I and group II regarding BMI, BFM, PBF and hsCRP. No significant difference was observed between the two subgroups regarding IL-37 levels and hsCRP levels. A highly significant negative correlation was observed between vitamin D levels and IL-37. A significant negative correlation was observed between hsCRP and vitamin D levels. However, no correlation was observed between hsCRP and IL-37 levels. Conclusion Data from our study showed that present study denote that in case of vitamin D deficiency, irrespective of BMI, a subclinical state of inflammation may be present as reflected by the increased hsCRP levels and this state of inflammation might induce an increase in IL-37, an anti-inflammatory cytokine, in an attempt to reduce the inflammation.

Category: Lesser Toes, Midfoot/Forefoot, Sports Introduction/Purpose: The incidence of stress injury in female runners is reported in up to 21% of competitive runners, with female runners at higher risk for stress injury than men. Bone metabolism is closely linked with vitamin D, which may play a role in the high prevalence of stress fractures in female runners. Although runners who train outdoors in the southeastern US have adequate vitamin D levels, no study to date has evaluated runners in northeastern US. The aim of the study was to prospectively evaluate the relationship between 25-OH vitamin D serum levels and the incidence of stress injury in a cohort of collegiate competitive long-distance runners. Methods: 101 female collegiate runners from 7 Northeastern US colleges competing in varsity cross country were enrolled. Surveys were collected from all the study participants at the start of the fall cross country season reviewing demographics, weekly mileage, and medical history, including previous stress fracture incidence. Additionally, baseline (“summer”) serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were obtained. Subjects insufficient in vitamin D (<30ng/mL) were supplemented with cholecalciferol (D3) 50,000 units weekly for 8 weeks and 2,000 units daily for an additional 1 month. In subjects with vitamin D insufficiency, repeat labs were performed at 3 months and repeat surveys distributed. To account for variation in season and geographical location, all subjects underwent repeat vitamin D labs at 6 months (”winter”). Fisher’s exact test was used to determine whether vitamin D levels were correlated with incidence of stress fracture. Results: 91/101 (90%) subjects with mean BMI of 20.5 and average age of 20 years completed all study requirements. The mean summer and winter vitamin D serum levels were 64.0 ng/mL (SD 16.6; range 28.9-112.9) and 45.0 ng/mL (SD 13.8; range 20.1- 90.6), respectively. One subject (1%) in the summer and 9 subjects (10%) in the winter were supplemented for vitamin D insufficiency. 7/10 (70%) insufficient subjects and 28/81 (35%) vitamin D sufficient subjects reported a stress fracture during the study period. Patients that had an insufficient vitamin D result were significantly more likely to have a stress fracture during the study period (p=0.041; Table 1). The mean change in vitamin D level from summer to winter was -19.7 (SD 14.4; range -60.5- 60.7). Conclusion: The high rate of stress fractures in this cohort of collegiate female long-distance runners is greater than previously reported. Runners who are vitamin D insufficient are at a higher risk to incur a stress fracture. The results of the study also highlight the considerable seasonal variance in vitamin D levels amongst female collegiate long-distance runners in the northeastern US. Further study is needed to determine whether vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of stress fractures.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the serum vitamin D level and the severity of bronchiolitis in infants. Materials and Methods: The population of this descriptive-analytical study included all infants within the age range of 1 month to 24 months old with bronchiolitis hospitalized in Bandar Abbas children’s hospital in 2018-2019. According to the exclusion and inclusion criteria, patients were entered in the study and diagnosed with bronchiolitis by a pediatric infectious disease specialist. Then, their serum levels of vitamin D were measured as well. Results: Of the 85 patients, 62.4% and 37.6% were males and females, respectively. The mean serum level of vitamin D was 29.74±13.44 ng/mL. In addition, the mean age in groups with mild-, moderate-, and severe-intensity was 9.27±4.52 months, 5.12±3.95 months, and 3.16±1.16 months (P<0.001), respectively. Further, the Spearman’s correlation between age and serum vitamin D levels was r = 0.05 (P<0.001). Based on the results, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean age in the two study groups (P<0.001). Finally, a statistically significant association was found between the severity of bronchiolitis and vitamin D status (P=0.007). Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, more than half of the infants admitted to the diagnosis of bronchiolitis had insufficient serum levels of vitamin D. There was also a significant association between the severity of bronchiolitis and serum vitamin D levels.
