This study explores patients’ opportunities for collective participation in an institution for people with substance use disorder. Patients and staff from the treatment institution cooperated with researchers to make changes in the treatment practice, using a research circle as a model for the project. In the article, we discuss the following research questions: How and in what areas did patients have the opportunity to participate collectively in the treatment institution? How did the patients experience participation in the research circle? Data consist of minutes from meetings, seminars, and focus-group interviews. The participants analysed the material together, and the authors carried out a thematic analysis after the project. The participants chose to explore how milieu therapy could build a bridge from treatment in the institution to life after treatment, a “Bridge over troubled waters”, to quote Simon and Garfunkel. Findings show that activities in the research circle led to changes at the institution, e.g., regular Sunday afternoon meetings, a weekly quiz, and less controlling procedures of substance use, and that the institutional culture in general became based more on participation and equality. Patients, staff, and researchers participated in a partnership; mutual recognition promoted cooperation and fellowship in the research circle. We conclude that the project provided the participants with opportunities for collective participation in the institution. In addition, the patients experienced partnership and empowerment in the research circle. Our attempts to change institutional practices yielded some improvements but also met with structural and cultural barriers. Thus, the project experienced challenges and obstacles mostly related to limitations in the institutional system and culture.

The aim of the study was to examine which factors affect the patient's ability to cope with lifestyle changes, the importance of social support to maintain lifestyle changes and how patients experience follow-up from healthcare professionals, two years after surgery. A qualitative exploratory design was chosen. Three focus group interviews were conducted with 13 patients. Content analysis was used to analyse the interviews. The findings revealed three themes; from knowledge to action, the importance of social support, and insufficient follow-up from the healthcare service. The patients need structure in everyday life, self-discipline and social support to reinforce self-efficacy and to manage and maintain lifestyle changes. Information and support from healthcare professionals should be tailored to where the patient is in the change process.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to describe Puerto Rican adolescents’ perspectives about an application “app” to prevent further injury from teen dating violence (TDV). Methods: We conducted three semistructured focus group interviews. Results: Participants ( N = 16) were 14–20 years old. Most (63%) were not currently in a relationship; three participants reported a history of TDV, and seven reported that they “did not know” whether they had ever experienced TDV. We identified four themes: (a) clarifying dating violence, (b) psychological abuse–the reality of TDV, (c) silence around dating violence, and (d) youth need a different tool. Adolescents thought that the app was beneficial for educating the user about dating violence behaviors. They also identified that the app should be modified to better suit adolescents, in part by, focusing more on psychological abuse and using other visuals to relay information rather than text. Adolescents also questioned the utility of the app as a bystander because TDV is often concealed and not discussed. Conclusion: Puerto Rican adolescents in our study expressed the need for information that could be presented in a more concise and dynamic format and highlighted the cultural barriers of silence around issues of dating violence.

Background: Substance use treatment has long traditions in Norway, but it was not until 2004 that it became part of the specialist health service, leading to new leadership requirements. The aim of this study was to understand how the field is perceived from a leadership perspective and how leaders perceive their leadership role. Method: The study is based on three focus group interviews with the mentors of 28 network groups. Data were analysed through systematic text condensation. Results: The analysis resulted in a clustering of four aspects the informants reported to characterise their perceptions of their leadership role: the inferiority complex, values ​​in substance use treatment, pragmatic leadership, and subjective leadership. Implications: The analysis shows that informal hierarchies of power, ideology, and expectations of interdisciplinarity in all decisions provide fertile ground for a flat structure and ambiguity in management. The findings reveal the need for measures to strengthen recognition of the field and develop the leadership role. Immigrants face barriers in seeking and accessing mental health and addiction services. Health professionals are crucial in providing and promoting healthcare and it is important to understand their experiences in order to enhance the access of mental healthcare. The aim of this paper is to explore and describe health professionals’ experiences with treatment engagement among immigrants with co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health disorders (MHD) in Norwegian mental health and addiction services. Within a collaborative approach, 3 focus group interviews were conducted with health professionals, who had provided various mental health and addiction care services to immigrants with co-occurring SUD and MHD. The focus group interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using systematic text condensation. The analysis resulted in 5 main categories: (1) difficulties due to language barriers, (2) difficulties due to lack of culturally competent services, (3) difficulties due to social factors, (4) being curious and flexible improves the user-provider relationship, and (5) increasing access to mental health and addiction services. This study provides an enhanced understanding of how health professionals’ experienced treatment engagement among immigrants with co-occurring SUD and MHD in the Norwegian context. Implications of the findings for clinical practice and future research are discussed.

Research on community impacts from service-learning has been scarce, yet this area is worth exploring in order to understand how and why service-learning can make a difference. The current research sought to validate a conceptual framework (Lau & Snell, 2020), which categorizes the impacts of service-learning on community partner organizations (CPOs) and on end-beneficiaries. Under the framework, impacts on end-beneficiaries can arise directly from service-learning interventions, but can also arise indirectly as a result of impacts on CPOs. For the research, semi-structured, one-to-one or focus group interviews were conducted with 13 CPO representatives, seeking their perceptions of positive and negative impacts of service-learning. Most described impacts were positive, including, for CPOs: achieving project goals to further the CPO’s mission; augmenting resources of the CPO; and gaining knowledge, insights, ideas and techniques. These positive impacts for CPOs appear to reflect three factors: alignment between service-learning project goals and the CPO’s mission; mutual recognition of students’ potential for transferring knowledge from universities to CPOs; and mutual understanding of students’ status as semi-outsiders, free to challenge existing practices or systems. Further studies can explore impacts from the end-beneficiary's perspective, and adopt longitudinal and action research approaches.

With the arrangement ofplanning and conducting interviews: the ethics of conducting interviews, the advantages anddisadvantages of interviews, the formulation of interview questions, the schedule of interviews,group and focus group interviews, interviews using recording devices, and interview bias.making a questionnaire must be designed with very good management by giving to theinformation needed, in accordance with the problem and all that does not cause problems at thestage of analysis and interpretation.
