Malignant mesothelioma is a tumour of the serosal membranes, related to asbestos exposure. Median latency is in the order of 40 years in various registries, but small numbers of cases with shorter latencies have long been reported and often dismissed as unrelated to asbestos exposure. However, emerging data regarding the significance of inherited mutations leading to a predisposition to mesothelioma suggest that the causative effect of asbestos may be associated with shorter latencies in a subset of patients. Here, we describe a male patient with germline mutations in RAD51 and p53 who developed peritoneal mesothelioma 8.5 years after well-documented asbestos exposure and discuss the current literature on the subject. Mesothelioma in situ is now a WHO-accepted diagnosis, but preliminary data reveal a potential lead time of 5 or more years to invasive disease, and this is also a factor which may affect the recording of latency (and potentially survival) in the future.

Primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma (PPMS) is a recently described, exceedingly rare low-grade lung sarcoma that tends to present in young females as an endobronchial mass and shows evidence of an EWSR1- CREB1 fusion. Herein, we present a case of PPMS with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis for EWSR1 and CREB1 rearrangements. An 80-year-old woman presented with an endobronchial, multinodular tumor exhibiting spindle, ovoid and epithelioid cells arranged in reticular/lattice-like and alveolar-like patterns in a myxoid background. The tumor showed focal epithelial membrane antigen immunoreactivity as well as an Alcian blue–positive stroma that was sensitive to digestion with hyaluronidase. EWSR1 and CREB1 rearrangements were detected by break-apart FISH probes. The patient showed persistence of disease 36 months after diagnosis and was discharged to hospice care. We contribute with a report of an additional case of this very unusual entity and perform a brief review of the literature published so far on the subject.

The growth of Ag films deposited on various substrate materials such as MoS2, mica, graphite, and MgO has been investigated extensively using the in situ electron microscopy technique. The three stages of film growth, namely, the nucleation, growth of islands followed by liquid-like coalescence have been observed in both the vacuum vapor deposited and ion beam sputtered thin films. The mechanisms of nucleation and growth of silver films formed by ion beam sputtering on the (111) plane of silicon comprise the subject of this paper. A novel mode of epitaxial growth is observed to that seen previously. The experimental arrangement for the present study is the same as previous experiments, and the preparation procedure for obtaining thin silicon substrate is presented in a separate paper.

Many of the large number of underground works constructed or under construction in recent years are in unfavorable terrains facing unusual situations and construction conditions. This is the case of the subject under study in this paper: a tunnel excavated in evaporitic rocks that experienced significant karstification problems very quickly over time. As a result of this situation, the causes that may underlie this rapid karstification are investigated and a novel methodology is presented in civil engineering where the use of saturation indices for the different mineral specimens present has been crucial. The drainage of the rock massif of El Regajal (Madrid-Toledo, Spain, in the Madrid-Valencia high-speed train line) was studied and permitted the in-situ study of the hydrogeochemical evolution of water flow in the Miocene evaporitic materials of the Tajo Basin as a full-scale testing laboratory, that are conforms as a whole, a single aquifer. The work provides a novel methodology based on the calculation of activities through the hydrogeochemical study of water samples in different piezometers, estimating the saturation index of different saline materials and the dissolution capacity of the brine, which is surprisingly very high despite the high electrical conductivity. The circulating brine appears unsaturated with respect to thenardite, mirabilite, epsomite, glauberite, and halite. The alteration of the underground flow and the consequent renewal of the water of the aquifer by the infiltration water of rain and irrigation is the cause of the hydrogeochemical imbalance and the modification of the characteristics of the massif. These modifications include very important loss of material by dissolution, altering the resistance of the terrain and the increase of the porosity. Simultaneously, different expansive and recrystallization processes that decrease the porosity of the massif were identified in the present work. The hydrogeochemical study allows the evolution of these phenomena to be followed over time, and this, in turn, may facilitate the implementation of preventive works in civil engineering.

The implementation of sustainability and green public procurement (GPP) initiatives in school districts has been the subject of some debate; questions over definitions and programme goals have led to inconsistency and concerns about programme achievements. The legitimacy of programmes rests not only with the announcement of policy by officials, but with adherence to policy and staff buy-in. This study examines barriers districts face, and makes recommendations based upon district experience on ways to successfully implement sustainability and GPP initiatives. A review of the literature on GPP and legitimacy in the execution of public functions within the education domain begins the study. Major components relative to best practices for GPP programmes are studied through the review of GPP-related documents from a school district in New Jersey considered as an exemplar of such programmes. Analysis of an interview with the district’s representatives suggests that, despite the normative approval such programmes receive, and widespread understanding of the rationale for pursuing such initiatives, there remain critical failings in implementation of these programmes, stemming from education, resourcing of initiatives and prioritization of green procurement in relation to other district priorities. The study concludes with lessons learned from this case, which is important given its positioning within New Jersey as an exemplar and recommendations for future research where work in this area is needed.

The amnestic-confabulatory symptom-complex to which the eponymous title of Korsakov's syndrome is usually given was probably first described by the Swedish physician Magnus Huss (1807–90), who spent the greater part of his lifetime in the study of alcoholism. There is, however, no doubt that Korsakov's (1890) paper on the subject gave an excellent description of the syndrome, and stressed the fact that whereas it often developed in patients with alcoholism and polyneuritis, numerous other metabolic and neurological disorders could be complicated by the characteristic mental changes. Indeed, in Korsakov's (1890) own series of cases alcoholics were in the minority. One of the neurological conditions in which the syndrome has been described significantly often is spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage. The first reports of the association were probably those of Flatau (1918 and 1921), and it was discussed in some detail by Goldflam (1923) and Herman (1925 and 1926). Each of these authors described the mental symptoms exhaustively but gave no actual case-histories; the first fully documented cases in the literature were the two reported by Hall (1929). Single cases have since been described by Cubitt (1930), Popow (1930) and Kulkow (1935), and in 1939 Tarachow gave an extensive review of the literature and reported an additional 3 cases. It is remarkable that since 1939 the association has received little attention, although it has been mentioned by Sands (1941) and Meadows (1951).

The aim of this article is to present spectacular examples of reclamation and development of post-industrial sites, carried out in Poland in the 1920s and 1950s, with emphasis on their recreational function. Examples include a park built between 1889 and 1920 by Wojciech Bednarski in the valley of the former quarry in Podgórze, now the right-bank district of Krakow, and “General Jerzy Ziętek Provincial Park of Culture and Recreation”, now called “the Silesia Park”, created in the 1950s on degraded post-industrial land located within the borders of three cities: Chorzów, Katowice and Siemianowice Śląskie. Both parks are examples of reclaiming brownfield sites for recreational use in order to create attractive leisure spaces. They have become a model and point of reference for other park planning projects in Poland. Their spatial and functional design is exceptionally timeless. The study is mainly based on a review of the literature of the subject.
