We present an investigation through numerical analysis (FEM) of the solution of the contact problem in friction clutch systems during engagement manoeuver. The case of high contact pressure between the sliding elements of a clutch system (flywheel, friction clutch and pressure plate) has been also considered. A finite element model of a dry friction clutch system (single disc) to estimate the distributions of the contact pressure between the contact elements of the clutch system under different working conditions has been developed and the main findings are discussed. Furthermore, the effect of modules of elasticity (contact stiffness) on the distribution of contact pressure of the mating surfaces was investigated. Also, the results encompass the deformations of the contacting surfaces for different cases. This work could provide a fundamental intermediate step to obtain a partial solution to the thermos-elastic problem in order to compute the thermal-driven deformations and stresses in the automotive clutches and brakes under different working conditions.

A pressure plate, a component of the clutch system, was analyzed by two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element method under three major load conditions of thermal loading due to temperature distribution, centrifugal force and contact pressure of diaphragm spring. The results show that the effects of thermal loading and contact pressure of diaphragm spring are important, which suggests the direction of design improvement. A hub plate was also analyzed with finite element modeling. A stress concentration occurs around the fillet region around the window in the plate where the fracture analysis is executed to find the stress intensity factors. These results will be used as the fundamental data for design improvement of the shapes of pressure plates and hub plates.

Abstract During vehicle braking and cornering, the tire's footprint region may see high normal contact pressures and in-plane shear stresses. The corresponding resultant forces and moments are transferred to the wheel. The optimal design of the tire bead area and the wheel requires a detailed knowledge of the contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface. In this study, the forces and moments obtained from the simulation of a vehicle in stationary braking/cornering conditions are applied to a quasi-static braking/cornering tire finite element model. Detailed contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface are computed for heavy braking and cornering maneuvers.

Abstract In this paper, A 3-D elasto-plastic contact problem in bearings is studied by Finite Element Method (FEM). A computer program has been developed for this purpose. A trial-error method is employed to cope with the geometrical nonlinearity and a tangential stiffness method is employed to tackle the material nonlinearity appeared in elasto-plastic contact problems. A frictionless contact problem of roller bearings is analysed, the result reveals that in 3-D elasto-plastic state the trend of the contact surface pressure distribution is similar to Hertz problem’s but flater.

The numerical simulation of the friction clutch system (pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel) during the full engagement period (assuming no slipping between contact surfaces) is carried out using finite element method. Two types of load condition considered affect on the clutch elements during the full engagement period are the contact pressure of diaphragm spring and the centrifugal force. The study of the pressure distribution between the contact surfaces and the factors affecting it is one of the fundamentals in the process of designing the friction clutch to obtain accurate estimation of the temperature distribution during the slipping period and the contact stresses during the full engagement period. The investigation covers the effect of the contact stiffness factor FKN on the pressure distribution between contact surfaces, stresses, and penetration. The penalty and augmented Lagrange algorithms have been used to obtain the pressure distribution between contact surfaces. ANSYS13 software has been used to perform the numerical calculation in this paper.

For the high hoisting height, wide using range, tower crane is widely utilized in the architecture construction, while there are some deficiencies in the high rising architecture such as chimney, so the performance can’t exerted. By virtue of computer aided technology, the finite element static analysis of metallic structure of unconventional dedicated tower crane is conducted in this paper, and the figures of stress and displacement are achieved for the two working conditions and two structures. It is proved that the results are satisfied the requirements of stiffness and strength, and also foundation is established for the further analysis.

Abstract Background The ideal acetabular position for optimizing hip joint biomechanics in periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) remains unclear. We aimed to determine the relationship between acetabular correction in the coronal plane and joint contact pressure (CP) and identify morphological factors associated with residual abnormal CP after correction. Methods Using CT images from 44 patients with hip dysplasia, we performed three patterns of virtual PAOs on patient-specific 3D hip models; the acetabulum was rotated laterally to the lateral center-edge angles (LCEA) of 30°, 35°, and 40°. Finite-element analysis was used to calculate the CP of the acetabular cartilage during a single-leg stance. Results Coronal correction to the LCEA of 30° decreased the median maximum CP 0.5-fold compared to preoperatively (p <  0.001). Additional correction to the LCEA of 40° further decreased CP in 15 hips (34%) but conversely increased CP in 29 hips (66%). The increase in CP was associated with greater preoperative extrusion index (p = 0.030) and roundness index (p = 0.038). Overall, virtual PAO failed to normalize CP in 11 hips (25%), and a small anterior wall index (p = 0.049) and a large roundness index (p = 0.003) were associated with residual abnormal CP. Conclusions The degree of acetabular correction in the coronal plane where CP is minimized varied among patients. Coronal plane correction alone failed to normalize CP in 25% of patients in this study. In patients with an anterior acetabular deficiency (anterior wall index < 0.21) and an aspherical femoral head (roundness index > 53.2%), coronal plane correction alone may not normalize CP. Further studies are needed to clarify the effectiveness of multiplanar correction, including in the sagittal and axial planes, in optimizing the hip joint’s contact mechanics.
