The present research aims to analyze the kinematic and dynamic behavior of the piston ring package. The development of the research was carried out through the development of numerical simulation by means of CFD. The analysis involves the three piston rings for the development of simulations that are closer to the real conditions of the engine since most of the investigations tend to focus on the study of the compression ring only. The simulation was reinforced by the incorporation of mathematical models, which allow determining the piston kinematics, the lubrication properties as a function of temperature, contact friction, and gas leakage. For the simulation, the CAD of the piston and the connecting rod—crankshaft mechanism was carried out, taking as a reference the geometry of a diesel engine. From the results obtained, it was possible to show that the first ring exhibits considerably greater radial and axial movement compared to the second and third piston rings. Additionally, it was shown that the first and second rings tend to maintain a negative tilt angle throughout the combustion cycle, which facilitates the advancement of the combustion gases over the piston grooves. Therefore, it is necessary to use strategies so that these rings tend to maintain a positive inclination. The analysis of the pressure conditions in the second ring are 150% and 480% higher compared to the conditions present in the third ring. Due to the above, it is necessary to focus efforts on the design of the profile of this ring. The study of energy losses showed that the combination of leakage gases and friction are responsible for a mechanical loss between 6–16%. In general, the development of the proposed methodology is a novel tool for the joint analysis of the kinematic characteristics, pressure conditions, and energy losses. In this way, integrated analysis of changes caused by piston ring designs is possible.

A capacity gauge has been designed for operating in the conditions of a working engine. The method of using it for determining the oil-film thickness and piston-ring profile is described. Oil-film thicknesses in the range 0·4-2·5 μm between the piston rings and the cylinder liner have been observed. Their variation with speed, load and temperature has been measured and it is concluded that their behaviour is essentially hydrodynamic.

The solution to the problem of increasing the motor resource of an internal combustion engine (ICE) is directly related to the reduction of energy losses due to overcoming friction in the elements of systems, mechanisms, and complexly loaded tribo-couplers (TC). Among the mechanical friction losses, a special place isoccupied by the hydromechanical friction losses in the internal combustion engine. The reduction of energy losses to overcome friction is achieved by reducing mechanical losses by limiting the level of loading of the rubbing surfaces, by increasing the proportion of the liquid friction regime for the most critical in terms of reliability resource-determining complex loaded vehicles. For complexly loaded vehicles, the time and magnitude of the acting loads are characteristic, at which the position of the movable element in conjunction is characterized by high eccentricities. Such complexly loaded vehicles include the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft, the “piston guide – cylinder liner” and “piston ring – cylinder liner” couplings, the thrust and thrust bearings of the ICE turbocharger, etc. One of the ways to reduce oil starvation isto texturize the contacting surfaces, which will increase the bearing capacity of a complex bearing due to the creation of many “micro wedges”. In particular, the texturing of the surface of the bearing shells of the crankshaft can be performed in the form of elliptical micro-holes, which allow you to save oil on the friction surface under any operating conditions of the diesel engine. The article provides an overview of the main types of microtexturing of friction surfaces of TC. A calculation model has been created and a calculation analysis program has been developed for the internal combustion engine “crankshaft neck-liner” TC. The calculations ofthe hydromechanical characteristics (HMC) of the vehicle for various types of microtexture were performed using the connecting rod bearing of the diesel engine CHN 13/15 as an example.

Fundamental understanding of piston ring-pack lubrication is essential in reducing engine friction. This is because a substantial portion of engine frictional losses come from piston-ring assembly. Hence, this study investigates the tribological impact of different piston ring profiles towards engine in-cylinder friction. Mathematical models are derived from Reynolds equation by using Reynolds’ boundary conditions to generate the contact pressure distribution along the complete piston ring-pack/liner conjunction. The predicted minimum film thickness is then used to predict the friction generated between the piston ring-pack and the engine cylinder liner. The engine in-cylinder friction is predicted using Greenwood and Williamson’s rough surface contact model. The model considers both the boundary friction and the viscous friction components. These mathematical models are integrated to simulate the total engine in-cylinder friction originating from the studied piston ring-pack for a complete engine cycle. The predicted minimum film thickness and frictional properties from the current models are shown to correlate reasonably with the published data. Hence, the proposed mathematical approach prepares a simplistic platform in predicting frictional losses of piston ring-pack/liner conjunction, allowing for an improved fundamental understanding of the parasitic losses in an internal combustion engine.

The need for integrated analysis poses a request for integration of computer models, paying extra attention to interfaces, data management and user interaction. Sector wide standardization using data dictionaries and data exchange formats can be a great help in streamlining data exchange. However, this type of standardization can have some drawbacks for a generic framework for model integration. Another concept, called Model Data Dictionary (MDD), has been developed as an alternative for proper data management. The concept is a variant on the federated database concept, a concept where local databases maintain their autonomy, while an interconnection database provides a link for sharing data. The MDD is based on a highly generic data model for geographic referenced objects, which if needed facilitates mapping of the sector wide data dictionary. External interfaces provide, in combination with a data format mapping component, a link to SQL-based data sources and model specific databases. A generic Object Data Editor (ODE), linked to the MDD, has been proposed for provision of a common data editing facility for mathematical models. A test version of the combined MDD/ODE-concept has shown the applicability for integration of all kinds of geographic object oriented mathematical models (both simulation and optimization).

On the diesel engine’s test bed, this paper has studied the parameters regarding the diesel engine’s rotational speed, the piston ring’s width and wearing capacity and so on, and their relation with the output signal of the magnetoresistive sensor under the reverse drawing of the diesel engine. The research discovered that the piston ring’s wear and the magnetoresistive sensor’s output have the corresponding relationship. And on the oil tanker with the 6RTA52U diesel engine, the influence of the diesel engine’s operating parameters and the load situations to the magnetoresistive sensor’s output is surveyed under four kinds of different operating modes. The test result and the research conclusion provide the technical foundation for the online Wear monitoring of the large-scale marine diesel engine’s piston ring.

The article considers and solves the problems of adapting the mathematical models, used in calculating operational characteristics of diesel engines burning mineral diesel oil, to engines converted to RME biofuels. The analysis of mathematical models of calculating the main technical and economic characteristics of diesel engines as well as the parameters of the in-cylinder process and the concentration of toxic substances in the exhaust gases is performed. The need for adjusting the calculation algorithms is also demonstrated. The computer programs based on single-zone thermodynamic models are used in the research. The programs of mathematical modelling are modified, i.e. supplemented with the algorithm for calculating energy characteristics of the combustion products (e.g. specific heat capacity, internal heat, the lower calorific value, etc.). Based on the computer programs, modified for examining diesel engines burning biofuels, the computer-aided mathematical modelling experiment is carried out. The results of modelling are compared with the data obtained in testing the diesel engine 1A41. The mathematical modelling performed demonstrates the accuracy acceptable for solving practical problems: the difference between the obtained calculation results and diesel engine testing data for the load range of (1.0÷0.5) Pi nom does not exceed ± 5÷7%. Higher accuracy of modelling the characteristics of diesel engines, operating in the low- and medium-load modes, may be accounted for by the adjustment of the algorithm for calculating the induction period and the on-set phase of fuel injection.

Compression ratio has very important influence on fuel economy, emission, and other performances of internal combustion engines. Application of variable compression ratio in diesel engines has a number of benefits, such as limiting maximal in cylinder pressure and extended field of the optimal operating regime to the prime requirements: consumption, power, emission, noise, and multifuel capability. The manuscript presents also the patented mechanism for automatic change engine compression ratio with two-piece connecting rod. Beside experimental research, modeling of combustion process of diesel engine with direct injection has been performed. The basic problem, selection of the parameters in double Vibe function used for modeling the diesel engine combustion process, also performed for different compression ratio values. The optimal compression ratio value was defined regarding minimal fuel consumption and exhaust emission. For this purpose the test bench in the Laboratory for Engines of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac, is brought into operation.
