In recent years, studies of different properties of hybrid metal matrix composites, as well as very detailed issues, have been published. In this article, ready-made iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were used to produce the base material and composites. An analysis of some microstructural and mechanical properties, as well as the tribological behavior of metal matrix composites (MMCs), based on FeGr1 sintered material with the single and hybrid addition of a silicon carbide and graphite was undertaken. During the study, the flexural and compressive strength of MMCs were analyzed and changes of the momentary coefficient of friction, the temperature of friction, as well as wear rates of the MMCs tested were monitored. Based on the results, it was revealed that wear rates decreased 12-fold in comparison to the base material when SiC or SiC + Gr were added. Further research into MMCs with ceramic particle additives is proposed.

Abstract Hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMC’s) are next generation metal matrix composite materials that have the potential of gratifying recent demands of advanced energy applications in the field of aerospace, automobile and biomedical. The MMC’s have to work at elevated temperature or vacuum environment where lubrication using liquid lubricants is ineffective or difficult to achieve; moreover, liquid lubricants are not environmental friendly, since they releases pollutants into environment. Solid lubricants such as graphite, CNT’s, MoS2and graphene have been widely used as secondary reinforcements to meet such operational needs by fabricating green or environmental friendly self lubricating HMMC’s. This article outlines recent advances in the area of self lubricating HMMC’s reinforced with graphite as secondary reinforcement. The focus of the study was on mechanical and tribological behavior of Aluminum and magnesium based self lubricating HMMC’s. The effect of graphite, different hybrid reinforcements and their strengthening mechanisms are also discussed in detail.

This study focuses on the properties and process parameters dictating behavioural aspects of friction stir welded Aluminium Alloy AA6061 metal matrix composites reinforced with varying percentages of SiC and B4C. The joint properties in terms of mechanical strength, microstructural integrity and quality were examined. The weld reveals grain refinement and uniform distribution of reinforced particles in the joint region leading to improved strength compared to other joints of varying base material compositions. The tensile properties of the friction stir welded Al-MMCs improved after reinforcement with SiC and B4C. The maximum ultimate tensile stress was around 172.8 ± 1.9 MPa for composite with 10% SiC and 3% B4C reinforcement. The percentage elongation decreased as the percentage of SiC decreases and B4C increases. The hardness of the Al-MMCs improved considerably by adding reinforcement and subsequent thermal action during the FSW process, indicating an optimal increase as it eliminates brittleness. It was seen that higher SiC content contributes to higher strength, improved wear properties and hardness. The wear rate was as high as 12 ± 0.9 g/s for 10% SiC reinforcement and 30 N load. The wear rate reduced for lower values of load and increased with B4C reinforcement. The microstructural examination at the joints reveals the flow of plasticized metal from advancing to the retreating side. The formation of onion rings in the weld zone was due to the cylindrical FSW rotating tool material impression during the stirring action. Alterations in chemical properties are negligible, thereby retaining the original characteristics of the materials post welding. No major cracks or pores were observed during the non-destructive testing process that established good quality of the weld. The results are indicated improvement in mechanical and microstructural properties of the weld.

The work presents the possibility of fabricating materials for use as a matrix in sintered metallic-diamond tools with increased mechanical properties and abrasion wear resistance. In this study, the effect of micro-sized SiC, Al2O3, and ZrO2 additives on the wear behaviour of dispersion-strengthened metal-matrix composites was investigated. The development of metal-matrix composites (based on Fe–Mn–Cu–Sn–C) reinforced with micro-sized particles is a new approach to the substitution of critical raw materials commonly used for the matrix in sintered diamond-impregnated tools used for the machining of abrasive stone and concrete. The composites were prepared using spark plasma sintering (SPS). Apparent density, microstructural features, phase composition, Young’s modulus, hardness, and abrasion wear resistance were determined. An increase in the hardness and wear resistance of the dispersion-strengthened composites as compared to the base material (Fe–Mn–Cu–Sn–C) and the commercial alloy Co-20% WC provides metallic-diamond tools with high-performance properties.

In the present study, the statistical analysis on tribological behavior of RZ5/TiB2 magnesium-based metal matrix composites is carried out using Taguchi design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. Taguchi analysis using signal-to-noise ratio indicates that the sliding distance and wt.% TiB2 are the most significant factors in evaluating weight loss and coefficient of friction, respectively. The regression equation is formulated utilizing the ANOVA technique to study the output responses based on the input abrasive wear test experimental results. The regression equation is validated through a comprehensive study taking a series of abrasive wear tests and indicates the percentage deviation of regression modeling is in the range of ± 10%. The individual and combined effect of wear parameters on tribological behavior are investigated through the main effect plots and response surface plots. The micrograph of the worn surface of RZ5/TiB2 composites is studied using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), indicating the formation of an oxide layer on the worn surface.

Purpose Aluminium is the most preferred material in engineering structural components because of its excellent properties. Furthermore, the properties of aluminium may be enhanced through metal matrix composites and an in-depth investigation on the evolved properties is needed in view of metallurgical, mechanical and tribological aspects. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of TiC addition on the tribological behavior of aluminium composites. Design/methodology/approach Aluminium metal matrix composites at different weight percentage of titanium carbide were produced through powder metallurgy. Produced composites were subjected to sliding wear test under dry condition through Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal design. Findings Optimal process condition to achieve the minimum wear rate was identified though the main effect plot. Sliding velocity was identified as the most dominating factor in the wear resistance. Practical implications The production of components with improved properties is promoted efficiently and economically by synthesizing the composite via powder metallurgy. Originality/value Though the investigations on the wear behavior of aluminium composites are analyzed, reinforcement types and the mode of fabrication have their significance in the metallurgical and mechanical properties. Thus, the produced component needs an in-detail study on the property evolution.
