Thermal evolutions of calcium-tungstate-borate glasses were investigated for the development of luminescent glass-ceramics by using Eu3+ dopant in a borate glass matrix with calcium tungstate, which was expected to have a combined character of glass and ceramics. This study revealed that single-phase precipitation of CaWO4 crystals in borate glass matrix was possible by heat-treatment at a temperature higher than glass transition temperature Tg for (100−x) (33CaO-67B2O3)−xCa3WO6 (x = 8−15 mol%). Additionally, the crystallization of CaWO4 was found by Raman spectroscopy due to the formation of W=O double bondings of WO4 tetrahedra in the pristine glass despite starting with the higher calcium content of Ca3WO6. Eu3+ ions were excluded from the CaWO4 crystals and positioned in the borate glass phase as a stable site for them, which provided local environments in higher symmetry around Eu3+ ions.

The glass samples in bismuth borate glass matrix containing Al2O3, with the composition of xAl2O3 : 30Bi2O3 : (70-x)B2O3 where x are Al2O3 concentration varying from 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 mol%, have been prepared. The obtained glasses were investigated some physical and optical properties. The results showed that the densities increased with increasing of Al2O3 concentration, whereas the molar volumes decreased. For the absorption spectra, no peak in the UV to NIR regions has been observed. Moreover the energy band gap and the refractive index for all samples have been calculated.

Ternary borate glasses from the system Na2O?CaO?B2O3 together with soda-lime-borate samples containing 5 wt.% of MgO, Al2O3, SiO2 or P2O5 were prepared. The obtained glasses were converted to their glass-ceramic derivatives by controlled heat treatment. X-ray diffraction was employed to investigate the separated crys?talline phases in glass-ceramics after heat treatment of the glassy samples. The glasses and corresponding glass-ceramics after immersion in water or diluted phosphate solution for extended times were characterized by the grain method (adopted by several authors and recommended by ASTM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectra to justify the formation of hydroxyapatite as an indication of the bone bonding ability. The influence of glass composition on bioactivity potential was discussed too.

Spinel (MgAl2O4) formation from stoichiometric MgO and Al2O3 is strongly mineralized by B-containing compounds such as boron oxide (B2O3), lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) and sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7) at 1000°C. TEM confirms that the mineralization with each compound involves borate glass which is presumably formed on cooling from liquid at 1000°C. EDS shows the boron-containing liquids formed from B2O3 and Na2B4O7-mineralized samples contain little alumina suggesting a templated grain growth whereas those in Li2B4O7-mineralized samples dissolve sufficient alumina to suggest dissolution-precipitation is occurring at this temperature. XRD shows that Li2B4O7 is the most effective mineralizer producing single- phase spinel with 3 wt% addition at 1000°C whereas B2O3 produces Mg3B2O6 at 1.5 wt% addition and both B2O3 and Na2B4O7- mineralized samples show incomplete spinelisation which may be explained by the composition of the liquids formed with these two mineralizers.
