Commercial waterborne polyurethane (PU) dispersions, different in chemistry and selected on the basis of eco-friendly components, have been applied to a common polypropylene (PP)-based woven fabric. Impregnation has been chosen as a textile treatment for improving the features of basic technical textiles in light of potential applicability in luggage and bag production. The effect of drying method, performed under conditions achieved by varying the process temperature and pressure, on the features of the treated textiles, has been verified. The prepared specimens were characterized in terms of mechanical behavior (tensile, tear and abrasion resistance) and water resistance (surface wettability and hydrostatic pressure throughout the treated textiles). The experimental results suggest an incremental improvement of the tensile features for all the investigated specimens. For tear strength, no augmentation compared to that of the neat textile, could be verified as a consequence of polyurethane treatment. Remarkable improvements of abrasion resistance were displayed for all the impregnated PP textiles. Benefits in water resistance could be attributed to the presence of hydrophobic PU in the textile weaving of the PP samples. The ultimate improvement in water resistance was dependent on drying conditions.

TDI as main isocyanate, IPDI as end-capping reagent, waterborne polyurethane emulsions (WPUs) surface-sizing agent have been obtained. The properties of WPUs and papers sized by WPUs with different DMPA content, different NCO/OH molar ratio and nNCOTDI/nNCOIPDI are systematically examined. The results show that WPUs are new kinds of surface sizing agents with good properties. The water resistance, surface gloss and smoothness of papers sized by WPUs have dramatically increased. The folding endurance, tearing resistance and tensile strength of WPU sized papers are observed to increase obviously.

Textile fabrics are often subject to abrasion, starting from exposed parts of garments to a variety of technical textiles. Abrasion protection by usual coatings, however, can significantly decrease the water vapor transport through a fabric which is often not desired, especially in the case of garments. In our paper, we report on an approach to combine increased abrasion resistance with sufficient water vapor transport properties. For this, different polymers (poly(methyl methacrylate), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or amorphous polyamides) were coated on cotton and polyester woven fabrics. The results of abrasion tests against sandpaper show significantly increased abrasion resistance. The absolute evaporation resistance, measured by a Permetest testing device, was only slightly increased up to values still acceptable for typical garments. Images of all coatings by helium ion microscopy deliver an explanation for the measuring results. Polymer coatings on the polyester fabric resulted in a slight reduction of the hydrophobicity, while coating the cotton fabric severely increased the contact angles of the originally superhydrophilic material.

Polyurethane is a polymer adaptable to different scientific and industrial requirements; nevertheless it is also extremely susceptible to UV radiation, which compromises the physical and mechanical functionality. In this framework, our study investigated the effect of waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) applied to a polyester (PET)-based fabric, through the impregnation method, on the puncturing and water resistance of the pristine material, before and after UV weathering. Results confirmed an increment of both features in the prepared fabrics, attributed to the PUR textile treatment; but a partially loss of the gained properties in the samples due to the UV weathering. In order to improve the efficiency of the impregnating dispersions, in protecting the durability of the treated materials, the addition of different UV light stabilizers, or/and of crosslinking agent into WPUD was also tested. From the experimental data, it can be concluded that formulations based on WPUD, containing both the crosslinker and UV organic absorber, have displayed an increment of their perforation and water resistance for the treated samples with respect to the starting textile, and contemporary have preserved the features against the UV light. Finally, microscopic and spectroscopic analyses have been performed as further characterization techniques of the samples surface.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to synthesize and characterize a series of two-component aromatic waterborne polyurethane (2K-WPU) which is composed of non-ionic and anionic polyisocyanate aqueous dispersion and polyurethane polyol aqueous dispersion. Design/methodology/approach The polyisocyanate aqueous dispersion was synthesized through non-ionic and anionic hydrophilic modification procedures. The values of the hydrogen bonding index (HBI) and molecule structures of WPU were obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The thermal, mechanical and water resistance properties of 2K-WPU films were investigated. Findings The appearance of non-ionic polyisocyanate aqueous dispersion and anionic polyisocyanate aqueous dispersion was colorless translucent pan blue and yellow opaque emulsions, respectively. FTIR not only showed that 2K-WPU was obtained from the polymerization of polyisocyanate component and polyhydroxy component by polymerization but also showed that the content of hydrogen bondings of anionic 2K-WPU (WPU 2) was higher than non-ionic 2K-WPU (WPU 1). The glass-transition temperature (Tg), storage modulus and water resistance of WPU 2 were higher than WPU1, whereas the thermal stability of WPU1 was better than WPU 2. Practical implications The investigation established a method to prepare a series of 2K-WPU which was composed of non-ionic or anionic polyisocyanate aqueous dispersion and polyurethane polyol aqueous dispersion. The prepared 2K-WPU film could be applied as substrate resin material in the field of waterborne coating. Originality/value The paper established a method to synthesize a series of 2K-WPU. The effect of HBI value and the molecule structure of soft segment on the thermal stability, mechanical and water resistance properties of 2K-WPU films were studied.

A novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU) modified by tung oil was prepared with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, polyethylene glycol, dimethylol propinic acid, 1,4-butanedilo as main materials via acetone process. The structure of WPU molecule was characterized by FT-IR. Adhesive behavior for non-polar and/or low surface energy soft packing films was studied. Water resistance of films were evaluated by water contact angle and water uptake and thermal properties determined by thermal analysis instruments. The results show that the modified WPU films have good water and heat resistance. Both of modified WPUs or not have good adherence on BOPP films.

The waterborne polyurethane was prepared by reaction between polyester polyol and isophorone diisocyanat, different nanoparticles were filled into the system for modification. The effect of different ratio of materials, the kinds and mass of nanoparticles on the characters of waterborne polyurethane latex and film were investigated. The results showed that the stable polyurethane latex and polyurethane film with perfect characters could be prepared when the ratio of NNCO/NOH was 2.5~3.0, the DMPA with a mass fraction of 5%~6% was added into reaction as a macromolecule extender after adding small molecule chain extender BPO. Filling nanoparticles into the polyurethane latex could improve the water resistance and mechanical characters of the film. Nano-sized SiO2 was a better modifier than TiO2, and the appropriate mass fraction of SiO2 was 6% of polyurethane raw materials.
