The numerical simulation of concrete fracture is difficult because of the brittle, inelastic-nonlinear nature of concrete. In this study, notched plain and reinforced concrete beams were investigated numerically to study their flexural response using different crack simulation techniques in ABAQUS. The flexural response was expressed by hardening and softening regime, flexural capacity, failure ductility, damage initiation and propagation, fracture energy, crack path, and crack mouth opening displacement. The employed techniques were the contour integral technique (CIT), the extended finite element method (XFEM), and the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT). A parametric study regarding the initial notch-to-depth ratio (ao/D), the shear span-to-depth ratio (S.S/D), and external post-tensioning (EPT) were investigated. It was found that both XFEM and VCCT produced better results, but XFEM had better flexural simulation. Contrarily, the CIT models failed to express the softening behavior and to capture the crack path. Furthermore, the flexural capacity was increased after reducing the (ao/D) and after decreasing the S.S/D. Additionally, using EPT increased the flexural capacity, showed the ductile flexural response, and reduced the flexural softening. Moreover, using reinforcement led to more ductile behavior, controlled damage propagation, and a dramatic increase in the flexural capacity. Furthermore, CIT showed reliable results for reinforced concrete beams, unlike plain concrete beams.

Reinforcement corrosion exhibits an adverse effect on the shear strength of reinforced concrete structures. In order to investigate the effects of chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel on the shear behavior and failure pattern of reinforced concrete beams, a total of 24 reinforced concrete beams with different concrete strength grades and arrangements of stirrups were fabricated, among which 22 beams were subjected to accelerated corrosion to achieve different degrees of reinforcement corrosion. The failure pattern, crack propagation, load–displacement response, and ultimate strength of these beams were investigated under a standard four-point loading test in this study. Extensive comparative analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of the concrete strength, shear span-to-depth ratio, and stirrup type on the shear behavior of the corroded reinforced concrete beams. The results show that increasing the stirrup yielding strength is more effective in improving the shear strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams than that of concrete compressive strength. In terms of three types of stirrups, the shear strength of the beams with deformed HRB-335 is least sensitive to stirrup corrosion, followed by the beams with smooth HPB-235 and the beams with deformed HRB-400. The effect of the different stirrups on the shear strength depends on the corrosion degree of stirrup and shear span-to-depth ratio of the beam. The predicted results of shear strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams by a proposed analytical model are well consistent with the experimental results.

The mechanical properties of high-strength reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP ( fiber reinforce polymer) are further investigated theoretically including it s failure mechanism and loadability,based on earlier theoretical works on RC beams. And the correlation equation of flexural capacity on the cross section of high-strength reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP is deduced according to different types of failure.The correlation equation is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results, which can be referred to engineering application.

This paper presents the findings of an experimental study on the application of a reinforced self-compacting concrete jacketing technique in damaged reinforced concrete beams. Test results of 12 specimens subjected to monotonic loading up to failure or under repeated loading steps prior to total failure are included. First, 6 beams were designed to be shear dominated, constructed by commonly used concrete, were initially tested, damaged, and failed in a brittle manner. Afterwards, the shear-damaged beams were retrofitted using a self-compacting concrete U-formed jacket that consisted of small diameter steel bars and U-formed stirrups in order to increase their shear resistance and potentially to alter their initially observed shear response to a more ductile one. The jacketed beams were retested under the same loading. Test results indicated that the application of reinforced self-compacting concrete jacketing in damaged reinforced concrete beams is a promising rehabilitation technique. All the jacketed beams showed enhanced overall structural response and 35% to 50% increased load bearing capacities. The ultimate shear load of the jacketed beams varied from 39.7 to 42.0 kN, whereas the capacity of the original beams was approximately 30% lower. Further, all the retrofitted specimens exhibited typical flexural response with high values of deflection ductility.

In this paper, behaviour of nine (09) RC beams (including two control beams) after unbonding and exposing flexural reinforcement has been studied which were intentionally designed and detailed to observe flexural and shear failure. Beams have been divided into three groups based on failure mode and unbounded and exposed reinforcement. Beams have been tested under two-point loading up to failure. Experimental results are compared in terms of beam behaviour with respect to flexural capacity and failure mode which revealed that the exposed reinforcement does not altered flexural capacity significantly and unbondedness positively influences shear strength; however, serviceability performance of beams with unbonded and exposed reinforcement is less.

This study is an attempt to derive a relationship between steel reinforcement corrosion and the coinciding loss of flexural strength. The corrosion of the steel was isolated in the flexural region in order to eliminate contributions from stirrup corrosion and loss of bond within the development length. It was determined that the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams decreased as the rate of corrosion increased. In addition to the study of flexural capacity, the prediction of the flexural behaviour of corroded beams was studied through the stiffness effects of reinforcement corrosion. The stiffness study indicated a sharp drop in stiffness at relatively low degrees of corrosion, followed by a slower decline at increasing levels of corrosion. Mass loss, crack width and chloride ion content were examined as indicators of degree of corrosion. These relationships are an essential step in developing an effective model for the performance of corroded reinforced concrete beams in the future.

Abstract In this article, results of experimental testing of reinforced concrete beams without transverse shear reinforcement are given. Three prototypes for improved testing methods were tested. The testing variable parameter was the shear span to the effective depth ratio. In the result of the tests we noticed that bearing capacity of RC beams is increased with the decreasing shear span to the effective depth ratio. The design method according to current codes was applied to test samples and it showed a significant discrepancy results. Than we proposed the improved design method using the adjusted value of shear strength of concrete CRd,c. The results obtained by the improved design method showed satisfactory reproducibility.
