Our paper aims at testing the impact of separate elements of the intellectual capital (IC) represented for instance by the human, structural, and customer capital, on the functioning and performance of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using mathematical modeling. We assess the intellectual capital with respect to the resource-based view theory. Our study is based on the data obtained from the 206 surveys with the representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries. We employed a mathematical modeling approach as well as the SPSS application package in order to test our hypotheses about the influence of intellectual capital on the enterprise’s efficiency. Our results helped us to determine that the concept of intellectual capital is practically not used in the management of small and medium-sized enterprises in CIS countries. It becomes apparent that individual techniques for managing intellectual resources can only be identified intuitively, based on an in-depth analysis of the current tasks facing managers. These findings confirmed the positive impact of intellectual capital on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises in the conditions of the economies in transition represented hereinafter in our paper by CIS countries, but only with the availability of financial resources and with some important reservations.

Controlling the investment activities of company representatives helps to avoid inefficient investment activities. Shareholders will face with risks if manager’s decisions which not bring benefits to shareholders (according to agency theory). Studying the influence of corporate governance on investment has an important role in controlling investment activities of enterprises. Therefore, the authors analyze the impact of corporate governance on investment of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam from 2014 to 2018. With data collected from 480 small and medium enterprises in Vietnam. The results show that state-owned enterprises tend to invest less than non-state enterprises. Companies with manager is board chair and manager hold shares will make investing more. Revenue growth and financial leverage have a positive impact on investment. From the results of this study, the authors also make some recommendations to help control investment activities in the enterprise through corporate governance characteristics.

Employee empowerment plays a key role in the management of talented personnel: it enables an organization to use workers’ skills and abilities in a way that enhances the performance of both employer and employee. Based on a survey of 349 small and medium enterprises in Quetta, this study examines the impact of employee empowerment on employees’ subjective wellbeing, which is measured in terms of affective and cognitive components. Its results indicate that employee empowerment has a significant and positive impact on employees’ subjective wellbeing, implying that senior managers should prioritize this aspect of human resource management.

This chapter identifies the existence of the major components of intellectual capital in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in the electrical and electronics manufacturing sector in Pakistan. This study has been designed with the aim of selecting 6 major components of intellectual capital, namely human capital, customer capital, structural capital, social capital, technological capital, and spiritual capital. A structured questionnaire was utilized to conduct a survey of 247 respondents from 106 SMEs to identify the existence of these components of intellectual capital. This study confirms the existence of the major components of intellectual capital in SMEs operating in electrical and electronics manufacturing sector in Pakistan. The findings of this study provide valuable insights on the generalizability of the components of intellectual capital in a novel research setting in Pakistani. The findings of the study allow SMEs practitioners a better understanding about the existence of the components of intellectual capital on which they ought to focus their management efforts in order to take competitive advantage. This study is among only a few to investigate the existence of the components of intellectual capital in Pakistani SMEs and the first to SMEs operating in the electrical and electronics manufacturing sector.

This research aims at identifying the impact of excellence in drawing up the following four marketing mix strategies (Product, Pricing, Promotion and Distribution) of the small and medium enterprises in Jordan, in terms of their marketing performance in its dimensions (Sales Growth, Profit Growth, Customer Attraction and Customer Retention).In order to reach the results of this study, A total of (187) valid questionnaire surveys were collected from companies belong to the SME Association in Jordan. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) approach was used to analyze the collected data. The empirical results indicated there is a significant relationship between the building of marketing strategies of the marketing mix elements in the Jordanian SME and their marketing performance, by (sales growth, profit growth, customer attraction, and customer retention) dimensions. Consequently, decision makers in small and medium organizations need to choose strategies based on their target market to the positive impact on the mind of the consumer, which in turn could improve modern scientific methods in SME to divide their markets into sub-market sectors.

The present research is focussed on examining the influence of micro- and macro-environmental factors on entrepreneurial success; and the impact of entrepreneurial success on perceived socio-economic benefits in the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) sector. The information was gathered from 373 entrepreneurs of MSME from different industrial areas of J&K (India). Structural equation modelling (SEM) has been applied to study the relationship among various variables and to develop the model. The findings of the study showed that various micro- and macro-environmental factors significantly influence entrepreneurial success in J&K (India). Furthermore, the study also depicted that entrepreneurial success has a significantly positive impact on perceived socio-economic benefits in J&K (India). Finally, an entrepreneurial environmental and entrepreneurial success model was also developed for strategizing socio-economic development in J&K (India). The study suggests economists and policymakers to use entrepreneurship as an engine to stimulate economic growth, generate job opportunities and overcome poverty. The present study collected information from entrepreneurs of MSMEs operating in different districts of J&K (India). The study is imperative because of its empirical nature within the area of the business environment, entrepreneurial success and its perceived socio-economic impact on the J&K’s MSMEs sector, as little has been done in this area.

The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the concept and application of intellectual capital in the food industry in Kuching, Malaysia. There is no doubt that intellectual capital is a most important strategic asset for the success of organizations. In a competitive business environment, intellectual capital has been a vital element of success, particularly in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of this study is to examine the role of intellectual capital in order to enhance the business performance of SMEs operating in the food industry in Kuching, Malaysia. In this chapter, three components of intellectual capital, namely human capital, customer capital, and structural capital, are employed to examine the role of intellectual capital in SMEs. A structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert Scale was used to gather the data from the targeted respondents by using a convenience-sampling technique. A total of 200 questionnaire sets were distributed to the targeted respondents. From the total distributed questionnaires, a total of 194 respondents gave their feedback. Four research hypotheses were addressed to find the objectives of this study. To test the proposed research hypotheses, multiple regression technique was used. The findings of this study show that the three components of intellectual capital collectively and individually have positive and significant relationships with the business performance of baking SMEs. Subsequently, the four hypotheses of this study were supported. This chapter is a preliminary study about the baking SMEs operating in the food sector in Malaysia.

The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that influence social media usage among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the impact on financial and non-financial performance. Convenience sampling was used to collect data. The respondent in this study are owner of SME that use facebook and instagram on their business activities. Based on SEM-PLS analysis, this study revealed that interactivity, cost effectiveness, and trust was identified as factors that motivate the usage social media. Meanwhile, compatibility has no significant effect on social media usage. Social media usage has a strong positive impact on financial performance (sales) and non-financial performance of SMEs in terms of customer service, internal operations, and marketing. In addition, this study indicate that social media usage has no positive effects on perceived impact on innovation.Keywords: social media, SME, performance, inovation,social commerce

Banks prefer to lend to bigger clients for a variety of reasons, including transaction costs and risk considerations. Due to this phenomenon, the Central Bank of Indonesia issued a regulation that requires banks to channel a minimum proportion of their credit portfolio to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Nevertheless, the impact of channeling funds to MSMEs remains a subject of controversy, in part depending on the dimensions and metrics used. This study examines how MSME lending affects the efficiency of banks in Indonesia, a country where MSMEs constitute more than 99% of business entities. Using a total of 175 panel data observations of banks in Indonesia from 2014–2018, banks’ cost efficiency is first estimated using a stochastic frontier approach (SFA). Panel data regression is used to examine the impact of MSME lending on efficiency. The result of this study shows a significant and positive impact of the proportion of MSME lending on bank efficiency, which indicates that requiring banks to channel funds to MSMEs does not only potentially support economic development, but also is beneficial from the business perspective in the Indonesian context. Mentoring has gained substantial attention in small and medium enterprises in recent years due to its high impact on business performance. Several studies have delineated the impact of mentoring on small and medium enterprises and found mentoring is helpful for improving organizational performance and transferring information from experienced entrepreneurs to inexperienced or les experienced entrepreneurs which leads to higher productivity of organization, better job satisfaction, and retention of workers. This study reviews the literature of mentoring and the components of mentoring. Findings of the study depict that mentoring has a positive impact on business performance. Moreover, the results also implicate significant decision-making suggestions for SMEs that improved business performance can be achieved by enabling efficient mentoring programs. These programs would benefits employee as well as the organization. Mentoring programs not only increase the value of employees but also the effectiveness of the business.

The first case of COVID-19 was detected in Wuhan city of China. The mysterious virus believed to have been spread by the sea food or bat. In a few days ,it gripped the entire world. Consequently, WHO(World Health Organisation) had to declare it a pandemic. There was no option before the world except social distancing and lockdown to keep safe from it. There are a number of issues such as disruption of supply chain, shutdown of core manufacturing sectors , loss of revenues from railways, aviation, tourism, unemployment, problems of the migrant workers, poverty , collapse of informal sectors, Micro Small and Medium enterprises and e-commerce. There are challenges before the country to deal with these issues as how to manage the survival , provide employment, eradicate poverty and improve the health sector. The country can seek various opportunities from lockdown such as utilisation of manpower , information and machine technology. The positive impact of lockdown has fallen on environment. Pollution levels have come down. Air has cleaned and Air Quality Index has improved. The paper examines the impact of lockdown, issues of economic growth as well as the opportunities wrought from the crisis.
