Inflammation is the body’s defense reaction in response to stimulations and is the basis of various physiological and pathological processes. However, chronic inflammation is undesirable and closely related to the occurrence and development of diseases. The ocean gives birth to unique and diverse bioactive substances, which have gained special attention and been a focus for anti-inflammatory drug development. So far, numerous promising bioactive substances have been obtained from various marine organisms such as marine bacteria and fungi, sponges, algae, and coral. This review covers 71 bioactive substances described during 2015–2020, including the structures (65 of which), species sources, evaluation models and anti-inflammatory activities of these substances. This review aims to provide some reference for the research progress of marine-organism-derived anti-inflammatory metabolites and give more research impetus for their conversion to novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

Marine adhesion organism includes biological mucosa such as marine bacteria, diatom, etc. and large adhesion organism such as mussel, barnacle, etc. Researches and analysis on adhesion mechanism of adhesion organism show that adhesion marine bacteria in biological mucosa will secrete protein-containing Polysaccharide polymer (PAVE) which can adhere to all kinds of surfaces. The reason is that in these secretions there is 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) which is very viscous. Analysis on mussel, a large adhesion organism, shows that it is of super viscosity, which may result from its special molecular structure and the interaction way with substrates, and interstrand crosslink mediated by DOPA. DOPA plays an important role in this process. For marine bacteria and mussel, their viscosity is correlated with the generation and cross-linking of DOPA. On one hand, DOPA can enhance the viscosity of adhesion organism; on the other hand, it can improve the internal cohesion through cross-linking.

As the spectrum of diseases keeps changing and life pace keeps going faster, the probability and frequency of diseases caused by human inflammatory reactions also keep increasing. How to develop effective anti-inflammatory drugs has become the hotspot of researches. It has been found that alkaloids from Chinese medical herbs have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antitumor, anticonvulsant, diuretic, and antiarrhythmic effects, among which the anti-inflammatory effect is very prominent and commonly used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and other rheumatic immune diseases, but its mechanism of action has not been well explained. Based on this, this paper will classify alkaloids according to structural types and review the plant sources, applicable diseases, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of 16 kinds of alkaloids commonly used in clinical treatment, such as berberine, tetrandrine, and stephanine, with the aim of providing a reference for drug researches and clinical applications.

SummaryEvidence continues to accumulate that the pleiotropic nature of heparin (beyond its anticoagulant potency) includes anti-inflammatory activities at a number of levels. It is clear that drugs exploiting these anti-inflammatory activities of heparin may offer exciting new therapeutic applications to the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory diseases.


This review paper covers the major synthetic approaches attempted towards the synthesis of some Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Naproxen, Ibuprofen and Nabumetone)
