Endometrial cancer has a high prevalence among post-menopausal women in developed countries. We aimed to explore whether certain metabolic patterns could be related to the characteristics of aggressive disease and poorer survival among endometrial cancer patients in Western Norway. Patients with endometrial cancer with short survival (n = 20) were matched according to FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2009 criteria) stage, histology, and grade, with patients with long survival (n = 20). Plasma metabolites were measured on a multiplex system including 183 metabolites, which were subsequently determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Partial least square discriminant analysis, together with hierarchical clustering, was used to identify patterns which distinguished short from long survival. A proposed signature of metabolites related to survival was suggested, and a multivariate receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.820–0.965 (p ≤ 0.001). Methionine sulfoxide seems to be particularly strongly associated with poor survival rates in these patients. In a subgroup with preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography data, selected metabolites correlated with the estimated abdominal fat distribution parameters. Metabolic signatures may predict prognosis and be promising supplements when evaluating phenotypes and exploring metabolic pathways related to the progression of endometrial cancer. In the future, this may serve as a useful tool in cancer management.

Summary. Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer in developed countries. Biopsy of the sentinel lymph node can be considered as an alternative to full lymphadenectomy. In order to identify sentinel lymph nodes, a tracer substance is injected into the uterus to visualize the lymphatic tract. Commonly used tracer substances are Technetium-99m (99mTc) colloid, blue dyes, and indocyanine green (ICG). In this review the significance of sentinel lymph node biopsy in endometrial cancer management and the technique of the procedure is discussed.

Abstract Background OPD and OPD' are the two main active components of Ophiopogon japonicas in Shenmai injection (SMI). Being isomers of each other, they are supposed to have similar pharmacological activities, but the actual situation is complicated. The difference of hemolytic behavior between OPD and OPD' in vivo and in vitro was discovered and reported by our group for the first time. In vitro, only OPD' showed hemolysis reaction, while in vivo, both OPD and OPD' caused hemolysis. In vitro, the primary cause of hemolysis has been confirmed to be related to the difference between physical and chemical properties of OPD and OPD'. In vivo, although there is a possible explanation for this phenomenon, the one is that OPD is bio-transformed into OPD' or its analogues in vivo, the other one is that both OPD and OPD' were metabolized into more activated forms for hemolysis. However, the mechanism of hemolysis in vivo is still unclear, especially the existing literature are still difficult to explain why OPD shows the inconsistent hemolysis behavior in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, the study of hemolysis of OPD and OPD' in vivo is of great practical significance in response to the increase of adverse events of SMI. Methods Aiming at the hemolysis in vivo, this manuscript adopted untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics technology to preliminarily explore the changes of plasma metabolites and lipids of OPD- and OPD'-treated rats. Metabolomics and lipidomics analyses were performed on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) system tandem with different mass spectrometers (MS) and different columns respectively. Multivariate statistical approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least square-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were applied to screen the differential metabolites and lipids. Results Both OPD and OPD' groups experienced hemolysis, Changes in endogenous differential metabolites and differential lipids, enrichment of differential metabolic pathways, and correlation analysis of differential metabolites and lipids all indicated that the causes of hemolysis by OPD and OPD' were closely related to the interference of phospholipid metabolism. Conclusions This study provided a comprehensive description of metabolomics and lipidomics changes between OPD- and OPD'-treated rats, it would add to the knowledge base of the field, which also provided scientific guidance for the subsequent mechanism research. However, the underlying mechanism require further research.

The present work studies the engagement of prosocial behavior as an antecedent of affective commitment within for-profit organizations. In order to accomplish this, the work focuses on the role of positive feelings. It tests a partial least square-structural equation model using a cross-sectional survey of 144 professional employees from several Colombian industries. Results obtained show that prosocial behavior is associated with affective commitment, but only with the intervention of meaningfulness at work. These associations provide insight into professional employees’ attitudes towards the search for intrinsic motivation and engagement in for-profit organizational environments. Further implications revolve around the justification for working on practices that not only found and foster prosocial behavior in the workplace but also promote skill variety, task identity, and task meaningfulness to obtain adequate levels of engagement and commitment. Finally, since most studies have been conducted in developed countries, this study also contributes to a better understanding of the topic in previously unexplored contexts. In this case, a Latin American emerging economy, like Colombia.

Technology-based era has brought market into higher level competition in which online shopping set the new standard for customer and marketer transaction. Prior study held in developed countries has resulted variety of customers online shopping motives, meanwhile in Indonesia where online transaction just started to significantly increase, the driven factors of online impulsive buying behavior still need to be explored thusly. The construct of this study reflects to customer’s hedonic browsing behavior and utilitarian browsing behavior that motivates them to make an online impulsive buying decision. This study has constructed the models based on prior study related to online impulsive buying in several countries and proposed promotion, positive emotion, and psychological distance as variable predictors. This study validated the framework using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Finding indicates that psychological distance (PSYD) is directly affecting online impulsive buying behavior (IMPB), yet promotion (PMTN) and positive emotion (PSTE) are indirectly affecting online impulsive buying behavior (IMPB). Result implicates that Indonesian customers are dominated by impulsive yet efficient-first type of customers.

End-stage renal disease patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) are vulnerable to the protein energy wasting (PEW) syndrome. Identification and diagnosis of PEW relies on clinical processes of judgment dependent on fulfilling multiple criteria drawn from serum biochemistry, weight status, predictive muscle mass, dietary energy and protein intakes. Therefore, we sought to explore the biomarkers’ signature with plasma metabolites of PEW by using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance for an untargeted metabolomics approach in the HD population, to understand metabolic alteration of PEW. In this case-controlled study, a total of 53 patients undergoing chronic HD were identified having PEW based on established diagnostic criteria and were age- and sex-matched with non-PEW (n = 53) HD patients. Fasting predialysis plasma samples were analyzed. Partial least square discriminant analysis demonstrated a significant separation between groups for specific metabolic pattern alterations. Further quantitative analysis showed that the level of 3-hydroxybutyrate, acetate, arabinose, maltose, ribose, sucrose and tartrate were significantly increased whilst creatinine was significantly decreased (all p < 0.05) in PEW subjects. Pathway analysis indicated that PEW-related metabolites reflected perturbations in fatty acid mechanism and induction of glyoxylate and dicarboxylate pathway attributed to gluconeogenesis. These results provide preliminary data in understanding metabolic alteration of PEW and corresponding abnormal metabolites that could potentially serve as biomarkers of PEW.

Blood stasis (BS) is characterized as a disorder of blood circulation. In traditional Korean medicine (TKM), it is viewed as a cause factor of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and stroke. This study investigated differences in the plasma metabolites profiles of subjects displaying BS or non-BS patterns. Thirty-one patients with cerebral infarction diagnosed with BS and an equal number of sex- and age-matched non-BS patients were enrolled. Metabolic profiling was performed using UPLC-MS. The ratio of subjects with a rough pulse and purple coloration of the tongue was higher in patients presenting with BS pattern. Through metabolomics analysis, 82 metabolites that differed significantly between the BS and non-BS pattern were identified, and the two groups were significantly separated using an orthogonal partial least square-discriminant analysis model(P<0.001). Of these 82 metabolites, acetyl carnitine, leucine, kynurenine, phosphocholine, hexanoyl carnitine, and decanoyl carnitine were present in significantly higher levels in patients with a BS pattern than those with a non-BS pattern. Our results also demonstrated that seven plasma metabolites, including acyl-carnitines and kynurenine, were associated with a BS pattern, suggesting that variant plasma metabolic profiles may serve as a biomarker for diagnosis of BS in patients with cerebral infarction.

Abstract Background Women-empowerment is still a problematic area in most of the developing countries including Pakistan. The women contribution is limited and not well acknowledged in various developing countries. As the women contribution in Pakistani economy is only 25-30% which is quite low as compared to most of the developing as well as developed countries. Various studies addressed the women-empowerment; however, literature is missing to consider the role of various vulnerability factors such as health, environment, economic/social and political. Microfinance institutes are working; however, the result is limited. It is due to the various vulnerability factors which effect negatively on women empowerment and decreases the positive role of microfinance institutes. Therefore, the prime objective of this study is to examine the role of vulnerability factors and microfinance institutes in women-empowerment.Methods Cross-sectional research design was selected, and survey was carried out to collect the data from female clients of microfinance institutes. Primary data were analyzed by using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).Results Findings of the study revealed that vulnerability factors such as women health, environment, economic/social conditions and political conditions decrease women-empowerment. However, microfinance institutes are most significant to enhance women-empowerment. Services of microfinance institutes such as micro-credit, micro-saving and micro-insurance has significant positive relationship with women-empowerment.Conclusion Various vulnerability factors such as women health vulnerability, environment vulnerability, economic/social vulnerability and political vulnerability should be managed to increase women-empowerment. Microfinance institutes is one of the solutions to handle these vulnerabilities through various services. Therefore, the current study is significant for microfinance institutes, state bank of Pakistan and government of Pakistan while making the strategies to enhance women-empowerment.

This study aims to identify the determinants that influence the acceptance and usage of ICT among microfinance employees in the least-developed countries. It extended the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model with the inclusion of Innovativeness (IN) from the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory. The quantitative approach was adopted, with a survey questionnaire distributed online to microfinance employees in Yemen, completed by 195 respondents. Both measurement and structural data analyses were employed through Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), using Smart PLS software. The results show that the UTAUT variables Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE), Facilitating Conditions (FC) and IN were significant predictors of Behavioural Intention (BI) to accept and use ICT by microfinance employees, but not Social Influence (SI). The results also reveal that the most significant factors affecting BI were EE followed by PE, IN and FC respectively; BI was the most significant factor affecting Use Behaviour (UB) of ICT among the tested relationships in the study model. Significantly, the results show that IN was a crucial factor as it significantly affected PE, EE and BI to use ICT. The outcomes of the study will assist decision makers to make appropriate interventions for the effective use of ICT by employees in a flourishing and infant industry like microfinance. Consequently, it will help in eradicating and eliminating poverty, a global issue.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> Both performances of lymphadenectomy and benefit of adding adjuvant radiotherapy are controversial for patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB endometrioid type endometrial cancer. We aimed to identify the role of lymphadenectomy and adjuvant radiation therapy as well as clinicopathological prognostic factors for this group of patients.<br /><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Study Design:</strong> Records of all patients (n=132) with stage IB endometrioid endometrial cancer who were referred to or treated in our institution between Jan 1992 and Dec 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Cox Proportional Hazard Regression Analysis was used to determine the effects of lymphadenectomy and adjuvant radiation as well as other clinicopathological factors on disease free survival and overall survival.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Mean age was 59.9 years (range, 45-82). Lymphadenectomy didn't perform in 36 (27.3%) patients and 23 (17.4%) patients did not have any kind of adjuvant treatment. Mean lymph node count was 18.8 (range, 3-67). Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics grade, lymphovascular space invasion, lymphadenectomy, receiving adjuvant treatment and type of received adjuvant therapy were not associated with disease free survival and overall survival for the entire cohort. In a subgroup of patients with grade1&amp;2 tumor, 5-year disease free survival rates were 80% and 50% (p=0.4), respectively and overall survival rates were 94.8% and 93.8% (p=0.2), respectively for patients who had or didn't have adjuvant radiotherapy. While performance of lymphadenectomy was not significantly associated with disease free survival in this subgroup (p=0.56), this association was statistically significant for overall survival (97.9% vs. 86.4%, p=0.04) <br /><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Benefit of adjuvant radiotherapy in regard to prevention of recurrence needs to be confirmed by further studies. Lymphadenectomy had a survival benefit for patients with myometrial invasion greater than a half of myometrial thickness.</p>
