Social media platforms are widely used nowadays by various businesses to promote their products and services through multimedia content. Instagram is one of those platforms, which is used not only by companies to promote their products but also by local governments to promote tourist destinations. Predicting the popularity of the promotional tourist destination images helps marketers to plan strategically. However, given the abundance of images posted on Instagram daily, identifying the factors that determine the popularity of an image is a big challenge, due to informal and noisy visual content, frequent content evolution, a lack of explicit visual elements, and people’s informal behavior in liking, commenting on, and viewing the images. We present an approach to identify the factors most responsible for the popularity of tourist destinations-related images on Instagram. Our approach provides a proof of concept for an artificial intelligence (AI)-based real-time content management system, which will help to promote a tourist destination. The experiments on a collection of posts crawled from the official Instagram account of Jeju Island, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Korea, show that the recency of the post is the most important predictor of the number of likes and comments it will receive. Moreover, the combination of visual content and context features is an excellent predictor of popularity. The number of likes and comments are found to be complementary to each other for predicting image popularity.

The emergence of various kinds of social media applications does not only affect the way people communicate, but also penetrates into the realm of online mass media. Social media platforms that carry the concept of web 2.0 namely user generated content and network effects make it easy for a news to become viral in a short time, regardless of the validity and accuracy of the news. Web 2.0 itself is a direct application of the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) which emphasizes collaboration and user participation, but in a broader domain, it is slightly different from KM which emphasizes internal organizational participation. Hipwee as one of the social media-based online news sites applies both concepts to its content management. The purpose of this study was to analyze the extent of the application of KM in relation to Web 2.0. The method used to explore data through interviews with Hipwee managers and direct observation to the office location and also the Hipwee site. The results obtained are that the adaptation of the KM concept has not been applied to Web 2.0 on the Hipwee site, namely the concept of data mining, while the Web 2.0 concept has been applied to KM, namely unbounded collaboration, user generated content and network effects.

Design/methodology/approach – Categorizing the determinants to interactivity covering depth and breadth into two aspects that are the structural features and the content features, this study employs general linear model and ANOVA method to analyse 14,910 posts belonged to the top list of the 96 most popular government accounts of Sina, one of the largest social media platforms in China. Findings – The main findings of the research are that both variables of the ratio of multimedia elements, and the ratio of external links have positive effects on the breadth of interactivity, while the ratio of multimedia features, and the ratio of originality have significant effects on the depth of interactivity. Originality/value – The contributions are as follows. First, the authors analyse the properties and the topics of government posts to draw a rich picture of how local governments use the micro-blog as a communications channel to interact with the public. Second, the authors conceptualize the government online interactivity in terms of the breadth and depth. Third, the authors identify factors that will enhance the interactivity from two aspects: structural features and content features. Lastly, the authors offer suggestions to local governments on how to strengthen the e-government interactivity in social media.

The tourism sector is one of the sectors that was hardest hit when the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia. Tourist visits during the Covid-19 pandemic decreased dramatically. To overcome this situation, serious efforts are needed to keep tourist destinations in demand by visitors, including the case study of Gembira Loka Zoo (GLZoo) Yogyakarta. One of the efforts taken by GLZoo managers is through social media, such as Instagram, in order to maintain the brand awareness of GLZoo as a tourist destination. Tourist destinations that are closely related to social media, in which there is a term that has an important meaning and role, namely online engagement which is a psychological response from social media users (Instagram). Online engagement aims to see how much the uploads on Instagram social media have achieved. This paper uses a qualitative descriptive research method, namely finding a fact with the correct interpretation. Hopefully, with marketing communication using Instagram, it is so that brand awareness in the minds of consumers is maintained, the final goal is of course the top of mind stage. In addition, to get maximum engagements, the GLZoo Instagram account manager seems to have to pay attention to several factors: 1). type of content, 2) upload time, 3) caption, and 4) hashtags. So, when tourists have thoughts of wanting to travel in a category that suits GLZoo, the first thing that tourists remember is GLZoo spontaneously without any assistance or stimulus.

Through user-generated posts on Instagram, Paralympians’ self-presentation may mitigate stereotypes associated with disability, counteracting negative assumptions. Using content analyses and paired t tests, visual content posted by Paralympians was examined for the portrayal of disability stereotypes. Compared with the social media content of able-bodied athletes, which typically focus on personal and lifestyle aspects, the majority of the Paralympians’ visual content depicted them engaged in sport or fitness-related activities. By posting content that depicts physical competence and elite abilities, Paralympians may change the narrative to promote the capabilities of athletes with a disability. Through the portrayal of sport and exercise engagement on social media platforms, these Paralympians are potentially mitigating disability stereotypes with the intent to curate a culture that is more accepting and inclusive.

This paper aims to introduce a model for social media content management that is focused on both the strategic and operational levels to guide companies in setting, formulating and spreading social media marketing content and monitoring the achieved results. The framework has been realized considering different cognitive goals related to the organizational unit responsible of the development of the content marketing processes, corporate content identity, decision making elements for digital content creation, the diffusion of content through social media platforms, and the tools and parameters used to measure and evaluate performance. The model presented here is an attempt to fill in the existing gap in the recent literature regarding digital content marketing and social media content management. The framework introduces some consequential steps of a well-defined process that is composed of decisions and activities that must be carefully planned, thus preventing (from an operational level) the recurrent use of specific management tools. By adopting an integrated vision, is it possible to keep the business strategy’s objectives and all the operative tasks conducted by the content marketing team aligned.

Abstract Social media platforms are increasingly being used by public agencies and emergency managers to communicate with the public in times of crisis. However, while the adoption of these technologies has been well documented at the federal level, little is known empirically about the extent to which social media are being utilized for emergency management communications by local agencies, and less still is known about how rates of adoption vary based on the organizational and demographic characteristics of local municipalities. This exploratory study provides an empirical analysis of social media use by local municipalities in the State of Florida and examines the organizational and demographic factors related to social media adoption for emergency and crisis communications. The study suggests that social media are still underutilized by local agencies in many regards. Findings also indicate that larger municipalities which serve younger, more highly educated populations are more likely to adopt social media for crisis communications, while agencies representing traditionally under-served populations are less likely to utilize social media for these same purposes. The implications of these findings are discussed, particularly the role of higher education in preparing public administrators and emergency managers for careers in a networked society.

“Jamal al-Khatib” is a participatory project in the field of P/CVE, which aims at delivering alternative narratives to adolescents via digital youthwork. The target groups are youngsters who either sympathize with jihadi propaganda online, or are vulnerable to online recruitment efforts. The project was initiated by a former in prison whose intention, after he extricated himself from the jihadi scene, was to prevent other youngsters from repeating his mistakes. Besides professionals from various backgrounds reaching from social work and Islamic studies to film production and digital content management, the team consists of adolescents who either dropped out of the jihadi scene or proved to be resilient against recruitment efforts of jihadi online actors. According to the project’s peer-to-peer approach, their experiences form the basis for the campaign’s contents. Resorting to the method narrative biography-work, videos featuring alternatives to jihadist propaganda are produced. A lot of effort is put into adapting to the audiovisual appearance of IS propaganda. The videos are posted on different social media platforms, delivered to the target group via the fictional character “Jamal al-Khatib” and discussed in the course of online street work. Evaluation demonstrates that the project was successful in attracting a hard-to-reach target group online.
