(1) Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a potential adverse drug reaction of antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic treatment. MRONJ is mostly diagnosed by anamnestic data, clinical examination and radiological findings, with signs and symptoms often unspecific. On the other hand, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is characteristic for its pleomorphic appearance (e.g., ulcer, mucous dehiscence, non-healing post-extractive socket). We report three cases where OSCC mimicked MRONJ lesions. (2) Patients: Three patients undergoing amino-bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis presented with areas of intraorally exposed jawbone and unspecific radiological signs compatible with MRONJ. Due to the clinical suspicious of malignant lesion, incisional biopsy for histological examination was also performed. (3) Results: Histological examination of the tissue specimen revealed the presence of OSCC. All patients underwent cancer treatment. (4) Conclusions: Several signs and symptoms of OSCC may simulate, in patients with a history of anti-resorptive, MRONJ; for these reasons, it is important to perform histologic analysis when clinicians are facing a suspicious malignant lesion.

Oral cancer, the most challenging and life threatening disease in the field of dentistry, may start as a reactive lesion due to constant stimulus from tobacco consumption, transform into a pre-malignant lesion (dysplastic lesion) and ultimately develop into a cancerous lesion (Invasive carcinoma). There is a fundamental revolution taking place in the analyzing methods; extraction of biological protein from the saliva rather than from tissues or blood. Several of the biomarkers have been studied with pro-carcinogenic effects like Interleukins (ILs), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and leptin, but only a few have been stated in the literature, which show anti-cancer characteristics like adiponectin and zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein. This review explored the diagnostic and prognostic values of a biomarkers zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein (ZAG) in adults suspected of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The PubMed, EMBASE and Google Scholar were searched for scientific studies reported on the potential mechanism of zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein. All the research articles were selected in which ZAG is applied solely or in conjunction with other biomarkers in oral cancer and other cancers. These literatures were carefully assessed to find out and compile the diagnostic and prognostic values and to inquire therapeutic action of ZAG in the process of carcinogenesis.

Background: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a common condition of predominant oral pain without evident cause, that maxillofacial surgeons and otolaryngologists often refer to psychiatrists as somatic symptom disorder. In very rare cases, its typical burning symptom mimics those of other diseases in which serious fatal comorbidities may be missed. We encountered three rare cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with the first symptom of burning tongue.Case Presentation: Case 1: A 68-year-old woman had burning pain on the left lingual margin for 8 years. Antidepressant treatment was not efficacious. Cytology and biopsy revealed OSCC. Case 2: A 70-year-old man had burning sensation and paralysis of the tongue for 6 months. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 37 × 23-mm mass under the floor of the mouth and enlargement of lymph nodes on both sides. Case 3: A 90-year-old man had burning sensation of the tongue for 1 year. MRI revealed a 12 × 12-mm mass on the mandible with bone absorption.Conclusion: This case series suggests that psychiatrists must always be careful in regarding BMS as somatic symptom disorder and be cautious of the possibility of OSCC, especially in elderly patients.

A 19-year-old male castrated llama presented with a 3-year history of tooth root abscesses and an osseous mass on the left mandible. Surgical excision of the affected teeth and mass was performed, and histopathologic review indicated that the mass was an oral squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was admitted to the hospital again 4 months later in severe respiratory distress with submandibular edema, and bicavitary effusion. Necropsy results revealed regional and distant metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.

Melanoma associated-A antigens (MAGE-A) are silent in normal tissues except testis. However, they are activated in a variety of different tumors. Thus, their expression is highly specific to cancer cells. Reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) is a highly sensitive technique that has been used successfully for the detection ofMAGE genes in tissue samples. The aim of the study is to analyze the expression rate of MAGE-A12 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) using a high sensitive RT-nPCR. Total of 57 tissue samples obtained from patients with OSCC and 20 normal oral mucosal (NOM) probes of otherwise healthy volunteers were included to this study. No expression of MAGE-A12 was observed in the non-neoplastic NOM tissues. MAGE-A12 was expressed in 49.1% of the investigated tumor samples. The correlation between malignant lesion and MAGE-A12 detection was significant (p < 0.001). It is concluded that results of this study may indicate MAGE-A12 as a useful additional diagnostic marker especially for the early detection of OSCC distinguishing neoplastic transformation and detection of occult and/or rare disseminated cancer cells. In addition, MAGE-A12 expression in OSCC may also determine a new immunotherapeutic target and might be warranted to develop vaccine for OSCC.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common epithelial malignant neoplasm affecting the oral cavity. It accounts for 90% of all oral cancers. It usually arises from a pre-existing potentially malignant lesion, and occasionally de novo. The use of tobacco, betel quid and alcohol are well known risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma. Early detection is an important criterion for achieving high cure rate. Occasionally, OSCC may be misdiagnosed because of its variable and innocuous clinical appearance. We report the case of an early presentation of Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a patient aged 70 without preexisting risk factors, with a painful and soft erosion in the buccal mucosa for 2 months. The lesion resembled other benign lesions, but biopsy was mandatory and revealed an early squamous cell carcinoma.
