A scenario of the evolution of the shape of nucleons with increasing energy is described in the framework of an extended parton model, which consistently takes into account the transverse motion of the partons. At the energy E up to LHC, the nucleons have the form of a spheroid which expands as lnE in the transverse directions and grows linearly in E in the longitudinal direction. With a further increase in the energy, a mode of correlated behavior of the partons is established, which stops the longitudinal growth. Simultaneously, the expansion in the transverse directions changes to lnE, and a hollow mostly free of partons is formed inside the nucleons along the central axis in the direction of their motion. Numerical estimates of the corresponding parameters are obtained.

Recent experimental results on the production of hadrons in collisions of muons, neutrinos and antineutrinos with nucleons and nuclei at high energies are reviewed and discussed in the framework of the quark-parton model. Data are presented on the following topics: Multiplicities, fragmentation functions, transverse momenta and jet properties, azimuthal asymmetry, distribution of quantum numbers, production of strange and charmed particles, test of PCAC and shadowing, single meson production, and Bose-Einstein correlations.

Multiple scattering of partons is an important prediction of the parton model in high energy [Formula: see text] collisions, which can have a dramatic effect on the calculation of inclusive jet cross-sections at low transverse momenta. We discuss the implications of multiple scattering using a probability model, where it is found that at high energies the effects are extremely important in semi-hard processes, as well as being extremely sensitive to the shape of the gluon distribution within a proton. We give some examples at SSC energies.

The heavy quark-antiquark bound states (J/Ψ, ϒ) photoproduction processes at very high energies are considered using the theory of semihard processes. The transverse momentum of the gluon, their longitudinal polarization and virtuality as well as the saturation effect in the gluon distribution function have been taken into account in the approach used here. The total and differential cross-sections of the J/Ψ and ϒ photoproduction have been calculated. For the case of J/Ψ, we obtained the remarkable difference between the predictions of the standard parton model and the approach used here.

The transverse dynamics of a towed cable was studied both experimentally and analytically. Forced oscillation was applied on the upstream end of a cable towed in its longitudinal direction, while transverse motion in the downstream end was restricted by springs. Reynolds numbers based on length were in the 6.5 − 32.5 × 106 range and cable length to diameter ratio was 1180. The amplitude of the forced motion was 4.55 diameters. The transverse response was measured at two locations and compared to results from computer simulation, showing that the model known as the Paidoussis equation overpredicted the response by a factor of two around resonance. Modification of force coefficients with respect to a modified KC number improved the results, but important trends were not captured. Curve fitting the cross flow drag coefficient to experimental data gave a result 3.3 times the drag coefficient past a cylinder in supercritical flow. The discrepancies are believed to be caused by forward speed effect on the formation of vortices and the transient behavior of the wake, but the physics of this is not clear.
