Background: In our previous study regarding infection prevention after COVID-19, many Japanese citizen respondents had not received education/training on infection prevention. However, a total of 47.7% (n = 143) of these respondents wanted to receive education from healthcare professionals regarding the methods and effects of infection prevention. Therefore, changes in recognition of the roles of Japanese pharmacists before and after COVID-19 were investigated. Methods: We conducted a survey to determine whether recognition of Japanese pharmacists’ roles, especially their role in public health in the community, changed after COVID-19. Results: A total of 93.9% (n = 307) of the pharmacist respondents showed an increased awareness of infection prevention. Before COVID-19, the hospital pharmacists (67.2%; n = 80) were more aware of infection prevention than were pharmacy pharmacists (51.7%; n = 74) and drugstore pharmacists (47.7%; n = 31). The number of pharmacists who felt that the role of pharmacists in the community had changed after the pandemic increased, but the numbers of community pharmacy pharmacists (51.8%; n = 74) and drugstore pharmacists (55.4%; n = 36) were found to be slightly higher than those of hospital pharmacists (47.9%; n = 57). Conclusions: In a society in which swift responses and changes are required, for individuals to work as medical personnel their ability to respond while always being aware of the needs of society is required now more than ever.

An important role of public health agencies is to define the unacceptable. This concept has particular relevance for healthcare-associated infections. Evidence indicates that, with focused efforts, these once-formidable infections can be greatly reduced in number, leading to a new normal for healthcare-associated infections as rare, unacceptable events.

In light of today’s deeply connected social and environmental crises, environmental and sustainability education is increasingly being integrated into public health and healthcare professional education around the world (Barna, Maric, Simons, Kumar & Blankestijn, 2020). The Norwegian ‘regulations on national guidelines for physiotherapist education’ clearly support the integration of these topics by stating that ‘in addition to individually oriented work, physiotherapists should contribute to improving public health and the sustainability of society on the group and system-levels…with competencies in interdisciplinary and goal-oriented collaborations within the health- and care-sector and other sectors…to meet societies existing and future needs’ (Forskrift om nasjonal retningslinje for fysioterapeututdanning, 2019, our translation). In a new introductory public health module for our 1st year physiotherapy students at UiT Norges Arktiske Universitet we therefore integrated education about the social and environmental problems of our time and how they interact with health at many levels to inspire students to imagine novel futures for physiotherapy and the role of healthcare professionals in the future.

Background: Health care-associated infection (HCAI) affects the mortality and morbidity of inpatients worldwide. Nepal is a developing country in which HCAI pose a major problem in terms of patient safety. Improper and inadequate knowledge about HCAI among health care workers is responsible for majority of nosocomial infections resulting in prolonged illness. Thus this study was designed to assess the level of knowledge of infection control among nurses and pharmacists. Methods: A pre and post interventional study was conducted in 22 participants using a self-administered questionnaire which included queries on hand hygiene strategies, cross contamination sources and aseptic services. Each correct answer was scored as 1 and an incorrect answer was scored as zero. The total score for each individual was calculated before and after the intervention which was compared using the Paired t test at 95% confidence interval. Result: 81.8% of the participants possessed a good knowledge on infection prevention and control practices which increased to 100% after intervention. The difference in knowledge score before and after the workshop was found to be statistically significant (p=0.034). Previous training and duration of work experience was found to be correlated with the knowledge score whereas the other independent variables had no association with the knowledge score. Conclusion: Educational intervention has a positive impact in the knowledge level of the healthcare professionals in infection and prevention control.
