The essential oil (EO) of Salvia leucantha Cav. was isolated by steam distillation of the aerial parts collected in the South of Ecuador. Its physical properties were evaluated and the chemical composition of the oil was determined by GC-MS and GC-FID analyses using two chromatographic columns, DB-5ms and HP-INNOWax. Six major compounds were identified, namely, the sesquiterpenes 6.9-guaiadiene (19.14%), (E)-caryophyllene (16.80%), germacrene D (10.22%), (E)-β-farnesene (10.00%), and bicyclogermacrene (7.52%), and the monoterpenoid bornyl acetate (14.74%). Furthermore, four pairs of enantiomers were determined by enantioselective GC-MS of the essential oil. (−)-germacrene D and (+)-α-pinene showed the highest enantiomeric excess (ee%). In an in vitro assay, the essential oil demonstrated an interesting inhibitory activity of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), with an IC50 = 32.60 µg/mL, which is the highest determined for a Salvia species. In contrast, the oil was weakly active against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) with an IC50 > 250 µg/mL.

A novel chemical profile essential oil, distilled from the aerial parts of Clinopodium taxifolium (Kunth) Govaerts (Lamiaceae), was analysed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS, qualitative analysis) and Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID, quantitative analysis), with both polar and non-polar stationary phase columns. The chemical composition mostly consisted of sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids (>70%), the main ones being (E)-β-caryophyllene (17.8%), α-copaene (10.5%), β-bourbonene (9.9%), δ-cadinene (6.6%), cis-cadina-1(6),4-diene (6.4%) and germacrene D (4.9%), with the non-polar column. The essential oil was then submitted to enantioselective GC analysis, with a diethyl-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-β-cyclodextrin diluted in PS-086 chiral selector, resulting in the following enantiomeric excesses for the chiral components: (1R,5S)-(−)-α-thujene (67.8%), (1R,5R)-(+)-α-pinene (85.5%), (1S,5S)-(−)-β-pinene (90.0%), (1S,5S)-(−)-sabinene (12.3%), (S)-(−)-limonene (88.1%), (S)-(+)-linalool (32.7%), (R)-(−)-terpinen-4-ol (9.3%), (S)-(−)-α-terpineol (71.2%) and (S)-(−)-germacrene D (89.0%). The inhibition activity against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) of C. taxifolium essential oil was then tested, resulting in selective activity against BChE with an IC50 value of 31.3 ± 3.0 μg/mL (positive control: donepezil, IC50 = 3.6 μg/mL).

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from aerial parts of Nepeta alatavica Lipsky, N. nuda L., and N. olgae Regel (Lamiaceae), growing wild in Central Asia (Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), were analyzed by GLC and GLC-MS. The main constituents of the essential oil from N. nuda were 1,8-cineole (24.6%), 4a-α,7-β,7a-α-nepetalactone (21.0%), germacrene D (13.5%), and β-caryophyllene (12.7%), whereas those of N. alatavica were thymol (48.5%), verbenone (7.7%), and carvacrol (7.5%). In the essential oil of N. olgae the most abundant compounds were acetylcyclohexene (31.5%), 4-tridecyne (13.2%), 2-methyl cyclopentanone (6.8%) and 1,8-cineole (6.0%). The potential antioxidant activity of these essential oils was studied by using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. The essential oil of N. alatavica showed the highest in vitro free radical scavenging activity, probably due to its high thymol and carvacrol content.

Abstract The objective of the present paper was the assessment of the chemical composition of the essential oils from four Asteraceae species with a considerable food, medicinal, and agricultural value, collected in Egypt, together with their in vitro inhibitory activity against molds and yeasts. The essential oil of Launaea cornuta flowers was also evaluated for the first time, but because of its very low yield (<0.01%), no antifungal test was performed.

The essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Croton bonplandianus Baill. was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of 37 compounds have been identified, representing 96.2% of the total oil. The main constituents were identified as β-caryophyllene (16.7%), germacrene D (14.7%), borneol (8.3%), Z-β-damascenone (6.(%), isobornyl acetate (6.2%), α-humulene (6.1%), germacrene A (5.2%) and caryophyllene oxide (4.5%). The oil was rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (60.1%).

The chemical composition of Tornabenea bischoffii J. A. Schmidt essential oil from Cape Verde was studied by GC and GC/MS. Sixty volatile compounds were identified of which myristicin was the major constituent (33.6%). Using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging method and the in vitro assay for prevention of lipid peroxidation by thiobarbituric reactive species, significant antioxidant activities were evidenced.

The chemical composition of essential oil from the air-dried aerial parts of Satureja forbesii (Benth.) Briq. from Cape Verde was studied by GC and GC/MS. Thirty-nine volatile compounds were identified of which geranial (42.0%) and neral (31.2%) were the major constituents. Using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging method and the in vitro assay for prevention of lipid peroxidation by thiobarbituric reactive species, significant activities were evidenced.

The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Cleome serrata by hydrodistillation was analyzed by employing GC-FID, GC-MS and RI. Fourteen compounds comprising 90.4% of the total oil composition were characterized. The main components identified were ( Z)-phytol (53.0%) and di(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) (14.7%). The oil was evaluated for its in vitro antimicrobial activities against nine pathogenic microorganisms using the filter paper disc diffusion method. Moderate antimicrobial activity was observed against five of the pathogens assayed. In addition, the essential oil was tested against the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius elegantulus. Strong knockdown insecticidal activity was observed.

The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Santolina chamaecyparissus L., growing in Algeria, was investigated by GC-MS analyses. A total of 36 compounds were identified, accounting for 91.7% of the essential oil obtained. Camphor (31.1%) and cubenol (17.0%) were the predominant compounds. The potential of the antimicrobial activity was also investigated and the tested sample proved to be very active against Klebsiella pneumonia and Candida albicans (34.1 ± 0.02 mm and 35.0 ± 0.01 mm, respectively). Transverse sections of the leaf and stem of the plant suggest that the essential oil is localized in endogenous and exogenous sites.

The hydro-distilled essential oil obtained from the flowering aerial parts of Lepidagathis fasciculata Nees was analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of 38 compounds have been identified, representing 91.2% of the total oil. The major constituents were δ-cadinene (14.4 %), γ-curcumene (9.8%), sandaracopimarinal (6.6%), germacrene D-4-ol (6.1%), cembrene (5.0%), β-calacorene (3.6%), ar-curcumene (3.3%), trans–4,10-epoxy-amorphane (3.2%), abietatriene (2.9%), and α-cubebene (2.8%). The oil was rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (43.8%).

The chemical constituants of the essential oil from aerial parts of Marrubium vulgare, collected in Algeria, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The oil yield of the dried plant aerial parts, obtained by hydrodistillation, was 0.04% (w/w). 50 compounds, accounting for 82.46% of the oil, were identified. The major constituants were: 4,8,12,16-Tetramethyl heptadecan-4-olid (16.97%), Germacrene D-4-ol (9.61%), α-pinéne (9.37%) Phytol (4.87%), Dehydro-sabina ketone (4.12 %), Piperitone (3.27%), δ – Cadinene (3.13%), 1-Octen-3-ol (2.35%) and Benzaldehyde (2.31%).
