The pH of tree bark is affected by many factors, amongst them epiphytic bryophytes changing in their active state environment. Thus, we hypothesized that bryophytes can change bark acidity, dependently of the inclination of the branches, as inclination affect the water regime and particle deposition. We measured the pH under bryophyte cushions and compared it to nearby naked bark. Additionally, we compared results with experimental bark covering with neutral cover. We found that the pH of naked bark declines with decreasing inclination of trunks. Although bryophyte cover did not generally change the pH of the bark, there was a significant interaction with inclination: with higher inclination, bryophytes decrease the pH reaction of bark, while with lower inclination they increase it. One possible explanation may lie in changes to alkaline particle deposition, or conversely in the acidification of the bark by leaching. In addition, an experiment with a neutral cover showed that naked bark covering would substantially increase pH. As, on average, bryophytes do not change the pH of bark, there can be mutual interference between the alkalizing effect of the bark cover itself and the acidifying biological effect of bryophytes.

AbstractObjective.– The family environment is known to be an important contributor to the course of psychiatric disorders. In this study, we examined the family context of eating disordered (ED) patients with and without self-injurious behaviors (SIB).Method.– A Dutch adaptation of the Family Environment Scale ‘Sci Eng 57(9-B):1997;5927’ was completed by 131 ED patients of whom 47% showed at least one form of SIB (e.g., cutting, burning, hair pulling, etc.).Results– Results showed a significant difference in family environment between patients with and without SIB. The family environment of self-injuring ED patients was less cohesive, expressive and socially oriented, and more conflictual and disorganized than the family environment of those without SIB. No significant differences in perceived family environment were found with respect to the number or form of SIB and the subtype of ED. Neither did we find a significant interaction effect between ED subtype and presence/absence of SIB.

Two new species of predatory mites in the family Cheyletidae (Acari: Prostigmata), Mexecheles thailandensis n. sp. collected from tree bark infested by scolytid beetles and Samsinakia charanasriae n. sp. from soil and leaf-litter, are described and illustrated from Thailand. Keys to species of Mexecheles and Samsinakia are also provided.

The present study examined the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPT) within a culturally relevant framework by simultaneously examining familismo values to explain suicidal ideation among Mexican descent emerging adults. With a sample of 249 Mexican descent emerging adults (age range: 18–25 years; M = 19.17; SD = 1.53; 65.5% women), the present study found that there was a significant interaction between perceived burdensomeness (PB) and familismo-subjugation of self values. These findings provide evidence that in the context of perceiving one’s self as being a burden on the family, having higher familismo subjugation of self-values puts one at higher risk for suicidal ideation than if they have lower subjugation values. These findings highlight that when dissonance occurs between one’s values and their lived experience, a higher risk of suicidal ideation occurs for Mexican descent emerging adults.

Abstract The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effects of an effervescent sodium bicarbonate based oral composition on plaque and gingivitis. Subjects selected for this study presented at screening with moderate plaque and American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Type I/II periodontal status. At baseline, subjects were allocated to one of two groups by simple randomization; placebo (n=16) and active (n=16). During the study two subjects withdrew due to non-compliance and one because of a death in the family. Data were collected at baseline, day 14, and day 28. The Plaque Index (PI) of Silness and Loe was used to quantify the amount of supragingival plaque surrounding six selected teeth (3, 14, 8, 19, 24, 30), and the Gingival Index (GI) of Loe and Silness was used to assess bleeding tendencies and visual appearance on the same six teeth. A soft tissue oral assessment was completed at each visit. Subjects were asked to perform study treatment three times a day, after meals, and continue with normal oral hygiene procedures. Subjects were requested to complete a 28-day diary to assess compliance. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. There were no statistically significant differences between the placebo and the active product groups and no statistical significant interaction between product and location within the mouth or visit for either the plaque or gingival scores. Results reveal the product was safe to oral tissues and was well accepted by subjects.

Chloroplasts isolated from pea leaves display an intense circular dichroism in the range 600 to 720nm. Circularly polarized light is also differentially scattered by chloroplasts, and this effect can be confused with circular dichroism. By using an instrumental modification it was possible to distinguish, and record separately, the ellipticities of the transmitted light (circular dichroism) and of the scattered light in the same c.d. instrument. By means of a light-scattering apparatus, the intensity of unpolarized light scattered by chloroplasts was measured as a function of wavelength and of angle. This measurement allowed the aforementioned ellipticities to be corrected for mutual interference. At a concentration of 4μg of chlorophyll/ml (the optimum practical concentration of chloroplasts at which there was no significant interaction of scattering and absorption effects) spectra of true circular dichroism (circular differential absorption) and circular differential scattering were obtained. The former showed maxima, positive at 688nm and negative at 676nm, with an intensity Δθ′8.3m°·litre·(mg of chlorophyll)-1·cm-1. The latter had a maximum at 683nm with an intensity of +47m° with respect to the solvent baseline; this value is independent of the concentration of chloroplasts in dilute suspensions. It is suggested that the intense circular dichroism of chloroplasts reflects specific chlorophyll–chlorophyll interactions in the light-harvesting pigment. The advantages of this method for determining the c.d. of scattering suspensions over those of other investigators are discussed.

Yamadazyma is one of the largest genera in the family Debaryomycetaceae (Saccharomycetales, Saccharomycetes) with species mainly found in rotting wood, insects and their resulting frass, but also recovered from flowers, leaves, fruits, tree bark, mushrooms, sea water, minerals, and the atmosphere. In the present study, several strains obtained from rotting wood in Henan and Yunnan Provinces of China were isolated. Based on morphology and a molecular phylogeny of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rDNA, these strains were identified as three new species: Yamadazyma luoyangensis, Y. ovata and Y. paraaseri; and three previously described species, Y. insectorum, Y. akitaensis, and Y. olivae. The three new species are illustrated and their morphology and phylogenetic relationships with other Yamadazyma species are discussed. Our results indicate a high undiscovered diversity of Yamadazyma spp. inhabiting rotting wood in China.

Two Upper Triassic sphinctozoan sponges of the family Sebargasiidae were recovered from silicified residues collected in Hells Canyon, Oregon. These sponges areAmblysiphonellacf.A. steinmanni(Haas), known from the Tethys region, andColospongia whalenin. sp., an endemic species. The latter sponge was placed in the superfamily Porata by Seilacher (1962). The presence of well-preserved cribrate plates in this sponge, in addition to pores of the chamber walls, is a unique condition never before reported in any porate sphinctozoans. Aporate counterparts known primarily from the Triassic Alps have similar cribrate plates but lack the pores in the chamber walls. The sponges from Hells Canyon are associated with abundant bivalves and corals of marked Tethyan affinities and come from a displaced terrane known as the Wallowa Terrane. It was a tropical island arc, suspected to have paleogeographic relationships with Wrangellia; however, these sponges have not yet been found in any other Cordilleran terrane.
