Glycerol can be determined in several products by various analytical techniques. Titrimetric ones have stood out for their low cost, being recommended as standards. However, reliable, simple, fast, and green methods with low quantification limits are still needed. Titration of glycerol is based on its oxidation by periodate (Malaprade reaction) producing formic acid, formic aldehyde, and iodate. Iodate and periodate are iodometrically titrated, but mutual interference between these ions has produced methods with some drawbacks. Here is proposed to mask periodate with molybdate, to eliminate interference, determining the glycerol content through iodate, employing iodometric titration. Solutions containing from 10 to 1000 μg of glycerol were analyzed (error < 3.4%). The method was successfully applied for the determination of glycerol in biodiesels from different raw materials. Recoveries were from 92.9 ± 0.4 to 111 ± 3%. Semi-micro extraction was done, providing a fast procedure for determining free glycerol in biodiesel (< 10 min).

Abstract A twin-core photonic crystal fiber sensor is proposed for measuring liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature simultaneously. The air holes of the sensor are arranged in a hexagonal pattern, and two planes are introduced by polishing in the cladding. On one side of the plane, the gold film is deposited for RI measurement, and on the other side, the gold film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are deposited for temperature measurement. We analyzed its sensing characteristics by using finite element method. The numerical results show that the two channels for measuring RI and temperature have no mutual interference. It reduces the complexity of the sensing measurement. The maximum spectral sensitivity of the sensor is 20000 nm/RIU and 9.2 nm/℃, respectively, when the liquid RI is in the range of 1.36-1.42 and the temperature is in the range of 0-50 ℃. The results also show the sensing accuracy was not very sensitive to the change of structural parameters. It hence makes the sensor be easy to fabricate. Our work is very helpful for implementation of a high sensitivity, easy fabrication and real-time multi-parameter SPR sensor.

In this paper, we study the dynamic of the predator–prey model based on mutual interference and its effects on searching efficiency. The parametric conditions, existence, and stability for trivial and boundary equilibrium points are studied. Also, it has shown that by applying the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory, system undergoes Neimark–Sacker bifurcation across the neighborhood of a positive fixed point. Moreover, due to the bifurcation and chaos which objectively exist in a system, three chaos control strategies are designed and used. Moreover, to validate our theoretical and analytical discussions, numerical simulations are applied to show complex and chaotic behavior. Finally, theoretical discussions are validated with experimental field data.

The pH of tree bark is affected by many factors, amongst them epiphytic bryophytes changing in their active state environment. Thus, we hypothesized that bryophytes can change bark acidity, dependently of the inclination of the branches, as inclination affect the water regime and particle deposition. We measured the pH under bryophyte cushions and compared it to nearby naked bark. Additionally, we compared results with experimental bark covering with neutral cover. We found that the pH of naked bark declines with decreasing inclination of trunks. Although bryophyte cover did not generally change the pH of the bark, there was a significant interaction with inclination: with higher inclination, bryophytes decrease the pH reaction of bark, while with lower inclination they increase it. One possible explanation may lie in changes to alkaline particle deposition, or conversely in the acidification of the bark by leaching. In addition, an experiment with a neutral cover showed that naked bark covering would substantially increase pH. As, on average, bryophytes do not change the pH of bark, there can be mutual interference between the alkalizing effect of the bark cover itself and the acidifying biological effect of bryophytes.

The internal intensity monitoring in soccer has been used more in recent years in men’s football; however, in women’s soccer, the existing literature is still scarce. The aims of this study were threefold: (a) to describe the weekly variations of training monotony, training strain and acute: chronic workload ratio through session Rated Perceived Exertion (s-RPE); (b) to describe weekly variations of Hooper Index [stress, fatigue, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and sleep]; and (c) to compare those variations between playing positions and player status. Nineteen players (24.1 ± 2.7 years) from a Portuguese BPI League professional team participated in this study. All variables were collected in a 10-week in-season period with three training sessions and one match per week during the 2019/20 season. Considering the overall team, the results showed that there were some associations between Hooper Index categories and s-RPE like stress or fatigue (0.693, p < 0.01), stress or DOMS (0.593, p < 0.01), stress or s-RPE (−0.516, p < 0.05) and fatigue or DOMS (0.688, p < 0.01). There were no differences between all parameters in playing positions or player status. In conclusion, the study revealed that higher levels of fatigue and DOMS occur concurrently with better nights of sleep. Moreover, any in-season variations concerning internal load and perceived wellness seems independent of position or status in outfield players. The data also showed that the higher the players’ reported stress, the lower the observed s-RPE, thus possibly indicating a mutual interference of experienced stress levels on the assimilation of training intensity by elite women soccer players.

Abstract In the recent years, all-dielectric nanophotonics has been showing promising potential for biotechnology, with important progress in the development of efficient all-optical, all-dielectric nanosensing devices overcoming the ohmic losses inherently present in their plasmonic counterparts. In the quest to achieve single molecule sensitivities, a judicious design of the optical response of the nanoantennas is required. Here, we approach this problem from the perspective of non-Hermitian physics and investigate the interaction of two finite nanorods supporting Mie resonances, with the aim of maximizing the frequency detuning induced by a perturbation of the structure. We develop a simple semi-analytical technique to efficiently investigate the coupled system, and we find that Coulomb interactions, together with mutual interference induced by breaking the dimer symmetry, can effectively bring the structure towards a non-Hermitian singularity, an exceptional point, that can potentially increase the sensitivity. The results of this work are expected to lead to novel developments in all-optical single molecule detection, and merge for the first time all-dielectric nanophotonics with exceptional point physics.

This paper considers the problem of beam alignment in a cell-free massive MIMO deployment with multiple access points (APs) and multiple user equipments (UEs) simultaneously operating in the same millimeter wave frequency band. Assuming the availability of a control channel at sub-6 GHz frequencies, a protocol is developed that permits estimating, for each UE, the strongest propagation path from each of the surrounding APs, and to perform user-centric association between the UEs and the APs. Estimation of the strongest paths from nearby APs is realized at the UE in a one-phase procedure, during which all the APs simultaneously transmit on pseudo-randomly selected channels with pseudo-random transmit beamformers. An algorithm for orthogonal channels assignment to the APs is also proposed, with the aim of minimizing the mutual interference between APs that transmit on the same channels. The performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated both in terms of probability of correct detection of the directions of arrival and of departure associated to the strongest beam from nearby APs, and in terms of downlink and uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed approach is effective and capable of efficiently realizing beam alignment in a multi-UE multi-AP wireless scenario.
