Electrospinning was successfully used for the one-step fabrication of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers loaded with an inorganic photocatalyst—titanium oxide (TiO2). By tuning the PMMA/TiO2 ratio and the electrospinning conditions (applied voltage, needle tip-to-collector distance, and flow rates), PMMA/TiO2 composites with selected organic/inorganic ratios, tailored designs, and targeted properties were obtained. The morphology of the electrospun composites was affected by the amount of TiO2 incorporated into the PMMA fibers. In addition, the inorganic photocatalyst had an impact on the wettability, thermal stability, and optical properties of the electrospun composites. In particular, the surface wettability of the composites was strongly influenced by UV light irradiation and from hydrophobic became superhydrophilic. Moreover, PMMA/TiO2 composites had enhanced tensile strength in comparison with those of bare PMMA mats. The electrospun PMMA/TiO2 composites showed excellent photocatalytic efficiency against the model organic pollutant—methylene blue—which is very promising for the future development of membranes that are highly efficacious for photocatalytic water treatment.

AbstractIn this article small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is used to characterize the structural parameters of semi-crystalline blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate). Different blend compositions from 100 to 50 wt.-% of PVDF were investigated. The samples were considered to be isotropic. As two-dimensional SAXS patterns with cylindrical symmetry were examined, a single direction in the SAXS pattern plane was chosen to collect and plot absolute intensities versus the scattering vector. Using the one-dimensional (linear) electron density correlation and interface distribution functions obtained, respectively, from the Fourier-transformed Lorentz-corrected experimental scattering intensity and from the interference function, structural parameters such as the minimal value and the most probable value of the long period, the average lamellar thickness, and the volume crystallinity were determined.

Geopolymer-TiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by two different techniques, namely the two-step acidification calcination treatment and one-step adding method. The potential photocatalytic activities of geopolymer-TiO2 nanocomposites prepared by the two different methods were tested and compared. Nanocomposites prepared via the one-step process showed better photocatalytic activity. The amount of TiO2 particles loaded on the surface of the foaming materials was investigated by XRD and SEM-Mapping. By comparing with the sample obtained from two-step treatment, the TiO2 particles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the foaming materials for the sample obtained from the one-step method in this study. Results showed that the specific surface area of the geopolymer-TiO2 prepared by the one-step treatment process (28.67 m2/g) was significantly lower than the two-step acidification calcination process (215.04 m2/g), while the photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue trihydrate (MB) was better. This is due to the more stable structure of geopolymer-TiO2 nanocomposites, the better dispersion and more loading of TiO2 particles on the foaming materials surfaces, leading to the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

In this study, we developed polymer gate insulator-based organic phototransistors (p-OPTs) with improved optical switching properties by using a hybrid gate insulator configuration. The hybrid gate insulator of our p-OPT has a photoresponsive layer made of poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVP), which enhances the photoresponse, and an interfacial layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) for reliable optical switching of the device. Our hybrid gate insulator-equipped p-OPT exhibits well-defined optical switching characteristics because no specific type of charge is significantly trapped at an interfacial layer/organic semiconductor (OSC) interface. Moreover, our device is more photoresponsive than the conventional p-OPT (here, an OPT with a single-polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) gate insulator), because the characteristic ultraviolet (UV) absorption of the PVP polymer allows the photoresponsive layer and OSC to contribute to the generation of charge carriers when exposed to UV light.
