A new extraction system containing a mixture of Cyanex 272 and caprylic acid is proposed for the extraction and separation of lanthanides(III). It was shown that this system possesses a high level of extraction ability and capacity. The extraction of lanthanides(III) from chloride-acetate and nitrate-acetate media was investigated on an example of La(III). The composition of the extracted species was confirmed, based on the analysis of lanthanum(III) extraction isotherms. In the case of acetic-acetate aqueous solutions, a decrease in lanthanum(III) extraction efficiency was observed, due to the decreasing equilibrium pH of the aqueous phase in accordance with the cation-exchange mechanism. The composition of the synergistic mixture of Cyanex 272-caprylic acid established demonstrates highly efficient separation of rare-earth metal ions.

A study on solvent extraction of a mixture of light rare earths ions (La (III), Nd (III) and Ce (IV)) from nitric and sulphuric acid solutions with di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene as an extractant has been carried out. The influences of D2EHPA and acid concentrations on the extraction efficiency of rare earth metal ions were evaluated. It was found that the extraction percentage of La, Nd and Ce decreased as the acids concentrations increased. On the contrary, the extraction efficiency of these ions increased as D2EHPA concentration increased. The utmost extraction percentage of La, Nd and Ce (99.4%, 99.7% and 100% respectively) was extracted from 0.1 M HNO3using 1.0 M D2EHPA. The order of extraction ability of the studied rare earth elements by D2EHPA decreased in the series of Ce (IV)>Nd (III)>La (III).

:Solvent extraction and separation of Pr, Nd and Dy from a synthetic leach solution of spent NdFeB magnet from wind turbines in the presence of aquo-complexing agent Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied using the nitrate form of Mextral® 336At ([336At][NO3]) as an extractant. The effect of different process parameters such as pH, extractant, nitrate, and EDTA concentrations on the extraction of Pr, Nd and Dy was studied. The extraction of these rare earths elements follows the order Pr > Nd > Dy, whereas EDTA forms stable complexes in the order Dy > Nd > Pr. The synergy of these two effects improved the selectivity among these elements as compared to when no aquo-complexing agent was used. The mechanism of extraction of rare earth elements was established by slope analysis method. The Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra of [336At][NO3] and extracted Nd complex were recorded to understand the interaction of extractant with rare earth metal ions in the organic phase.

Three commercially available extractants (tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) and Aliquat 336 (a mixture of quaternary ammonium bases)) were tested for separation of Pr(III) and Nd(III) in both static and dynamic modes. In the case of HDEHP, phase stability and influence of nitric acid were considered. Extraction isotherms were constructed, and influence of water-soluble complexing agents on the separation factor was investigated for Aliquat 336. In the case of TBP, influence of calcium nitrate in aqueous phase on the extraction efficiency was investigated. Model countercurrent experiments were conducted for TBP and Aliquat 336. It was shown that TBP is the best choice due to its high capacity and cation extraction order (Nd > Pr).
