For the global ordinary users, the broadcast ephemeris plays important roles in positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services. With the construction of a new generation of the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS), the development of BDS has entered the era of globalization. It is meaningful for global users to analyze and assess the BDS-2 and BDS-3 broadcast ephemeris. Therefore, the satellite orbits and clock offsets calculated by broadcast ephemeris are compared with the precise orbit and clock offset products provided by three analysis centers (i.e., Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), Wuhan University (WHU) and Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHA)), and the corresponding signal-in-space range error (SISRE) and the orbit-only SISRE are analyzed to assess the accuracy of BDS broadcast ephemeris. Due to the upgrade of BDS-3 satellite hardware technology and inter-satellite links payload and the development of satellite orbit determination algorithm, the accuracy of broadcast orbit and clock offsets has been greatly improved. The root mean square (RMS) of BDS-3 broadcast orbit errors is improved by 86.30%, 89.47% and 76.86%, and the standard deviation (STD) is improved by 79.41%, 77.00% and 76.78% compared with BDS-2 in the radial, along-track and cross-track directions. The corresponding RMS and STD of all BDS-3 satellite clock offsets are improved by 40.34% and 52.49% than that of BDS-2, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean RMS and STD are 1.78 m and 0.40 m for BDS-2 SISRE, 1.72 m and 0.34 m for BDS-2 orbit-only SISRE, 0.50 m and 0.14 m for BDS-3 SISRE, and 0.17 m and 0.04 m for BDS-3 orbit-only SISRE. It is noteworthy that the average broadcast-minus-precise (BMP) clock values of BDS-2 and BDS-3 are inconsistent, which can indirectly prove that the datum of broadcast clock offsets for BDS-2 and BDS-3 are inconsistent. The inconsistency of the datum of satellite clock offsets and receiver hardware delay bias between BDS-2 and BDS-3 will result in the inter-system bias (ISB) on the receiver segment. For JAVAD TRE_3 receivers, the ISB is relatively small and thus can be ignored. However, for the TRIMBLE ALLOY, SEPT POLARX5, CETC-54-GMR-4016, CETC-54-GMR-4011, GNSS-GGR and UB4B0-13478 receivers, estimating ISB can improve the positioning accuracy of single point positioning (SPP) by 20.15%, 19.81% and 12.76% in north, east and up directions, respectively.

Code Single Point Positioning Using Nominal Gnss Constellations (Future Perception) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have an endless number of applications in industry, science, military, transportation and recreation & sports. Two systems are currently in operation namely GPS (the USA Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (the Russian GLObal NAvigation Satellite System), and a third is planned, the European satellite navigation system GALILEO. The potential performance improvements achievable through combining these systems could be significant and expectations are high. The need is inevitable to explore the future of positioning from different nominal constellations. In this research paper, Bernese 5.0 software could be modified to simulate and process GNSS observations from three different constellations (GPS, Glonass and Galileo) using different combinations. This study presents results of code single point positioning for five stations using the three constellations and different combinations.

On August 2016, the Milena (E14) and Doresa (E18) satellites started to broadcast ephemeris in navigation message for testing purposes. As the Galileo constellation is not yet complete. It is very important to have two more satellites available since the position accuracy increases as the number of visible satellites increases. In this article, we examine how the inclusion of the Milena (E14) and Doresa (E18) satellites impacts the position accuracy. The analysis was carried out on 20 days of 1-Hz observations collected by a receiver placed in YEL2IGS (International GNSS service) station. Two different scenarios are considered: the first excludes the measurements coming from the analyzed satellites, while the second one includes them. The analysis was conducted by using a suitable software tool developed in the MATLAB® environment able to compute satellites position from both the broadcast and precise ephemerides, to assess DOP (Dilution Of Precision) parameters and to compute single-point positioning for all Galileo frequencies. The analyses are conducted by using both broadcast and precise ephemeris. The inclusion of the two satellites improves the system availability, varying it from 94.1–97.94%, the DOP parameters, and the percentages of achieved positioning solutions by about 5% regardless of the frequency used. Nevertheless, in the positioning domain, when the broadcast ephemerides are used, the inclusion of the satellites worsens both the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the solution. The deterioration of the horizontal accuracy goes from 0.17 m with E5a frequency measurements to 0.74 m with E1 measurements. The reduction of vertical accuracy goes from 0.68 m for E5a to 1.2 m for E1 measurements. However, if precise ephemerides are used, both the horizontal and the vertical accuracy remain stable, actually for the E5b frequency, the DRMS (Distance Root Mean Squared) improves by almost 0.5 m. The results achieved show that the real drawback to overcome is related to the quality of broadcast ephemeris as, when precise ephemeris are used, the number of solutions achieved is increased by about 5% with an accuracy similar to that obtained when the satellites are excluded.

The BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS) has been providing a regional service in the Asia–Pacific area since 27 December 2012, and a new Inclined Geosynchronous Satellite Orbit (IGSO) satellite IGSO-6 joined the 14-satellite constellation in operation on 29 March 2016. In this paper, the signal and positioning performance of IGSO-6 are assessed. Compared with other IGSOs, the carrier-to-noise-density ratios of IGSO-6 show comparable performance for the B3 signal and a lower power level for the B2 signal, while the B1 signal is more powerful and has the lowest noise and multipath errors. The satellite-induced code bias of IGSO-6 was investigated and indicates that IGSO-6 has similar characteristics to other IGSOs. The different inter-frequency bias variations among IGSOs with daily periodicity are demonstrated. The BDS positioning performances with IGSO-6 were investigated in Single Point Positioning (SPP) and Precise Point Positioning (PPP) modes at the 95% confidence level. For SPP, there was an improvement of about 4·9% and 3·6% in the horizontal and vertical components, respectively. The convergence time was improved by about 18·3% and 17·8% in the horizontal and vertical components for positioning accuracy to be better than 50 cm, respectively.

For multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, the Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) is an important parameter utilised for the selection of satellites. This paper has derived new formulae to describe the change of GDOP. The result shows that, for GNSS single point positioning solutions, if one more satellite belonging to the existing tracked multi-GNSS constellation used in the single point positioning solution is added, the GDOP always decreases with the number of the added satellites. On the other hand, when the constellation of the added satellite is not from the tracked existing constellations, the different numbers of the added satellites have different influences on the change of GDOP. Generally, adding one satellite from another constellation into the existing multi-GNSS constellations will increase the GDOP, but adding two satellites will decrease the GDOP compared with adding one from another constellation. Additionally, the GDOP also increases in the cases of adding two satellites from two different constellations into the tracked existing constellations.

AbstractSmartphones typically compute position using duty-cycled Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 code measurements and Single Point Positioning (SPP) processing with the aid of cellular and other measurements. This internal positioning solution has an accuracy of several tens to hundreds of meters in realistic environments (handheld, vehicle dashboard, suburban, urban forested, etc.). With the advent of multi-constellation, dual-frequency GNSS chips in smartphones, along with the ability to extract raw code and carrier-phase measurements, it is possible to use Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to improve positioning without any additional equipment. This research analyses GNSS measurement quality parameters from a Xiaomi MI 8 dual-frequency smartphone in varied, realistic environments. In such environments, the system suffers from frequent phase loss-of-lock leading to data gaps. The smartphone measurements have low and irregular carrier-to-noise (C/N0) density ratio and high multipath, which leads to poor or no positioning solution. These problems are addressed by implementing a prediction technique for data gaps and a C/N0-based stochastic model for assigning realistic a priori weights to the observables in the PPP processing engine. Using these conditioning techniques, there is a 64% decrease in the horizontal positioning Root Mean Square (RMS) error and 100% positioning solution availability in sub-urban environments tested. The horizontal and 3D RMS were 20 cm and 30 cm respectively in a static open-sky environment and the horizontal RMS for the realistic kinematic scenario was 7 m with the phone on the dashboard of the car, using the SwiftNav Piksi Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) solution as reference. The PPP solution, computed using the YorkU PPP engine, also had a 5–10% percentage point more availability than the RTK solution, computed using RTKLIB software, since missing measurements in the logged file cause epoch rejection and a non-continuous solution, a problem which is solved by prediction for the PPP solution. The internal unaided positioning solution of the phone obtained from the logged NMEA (The National Marine Electronics Association) file was computed using point positioning with the aid of measurements from internal sensors. The PPP solution was 80% more accurate than the internal solution which had periodic drifts due to non-continuous computation of solution.

AbstractTo resolve undifferenced GNSS phase ambiguities, dedicated satellite products are needed, such as satellite orbits, clock offsets and biases. The International GNSS Service CNES/CLS analysis center provides satellite (HMW) Hatch-Melbourne-Wübbena bias and dedicated satellite clock products (including satellite phase bias), while the CODE analysis center provides satellite OSB (observable-specific-bias) and integer clock products. The CNES/CLS GPS satellite HMW bias products are determined by the Hatch-Melbourne-Wübbena (HMW) linear combination and aggregate both code (C1W, C2W) and phase (L1W, L2W) biases. By forming the HMW linear combination of CODE OSB corrections on the same signals, we compare CODE satellite HMW biases to those from CNES/CLS. The fractional part of GPS satellite HMW biases from both analysis centers are very close to each other, with a mean Root-Mean-Square (RMS) of differences of 0.01 wide-lane cycles. A direct comparison of satellite narrow-lane biases is not easily possible since satellite narrow-lane biases are correlated with satellite orbit and clock products, as well as with integer wide-lane ambiguities. Moreover, CNES/CLS provides no satellite narrow-lane biases but incorporates them into satellite clock offsets. Therefore, we compute differences of GPS satellite orbits, clock offsets, integer wide-lane ambiguities and narrow-lane biases (only for CODE products) between CODE and CNES/CLS products. The total difference of these terms for each satellite represents the difference of the narrow-lane bias by subtracting certain integer narrow-lane cycles. We call this total difference “narrow-lane” bias difference. We find that 3% of the narrow-lane biases from these two analysis centers during the experimental time period have differences larger than 0.05 narrow-lane cycles. In fact, this is mainly caused by one Block IIA satellite since satellite clock offsets of the IIA satellite cannot be well determined during eclipsing seasons. To show the application of both types of GPS products, we apply them for Sentinel-3 satellite orbit determination. The wide-lane fixing rates using both products are more than 98%, while the narrow-lane fixing rates are more than 95%. Ambiguity-fixed Sentinel-3 satellite orbits show clear improvement over float solutions. RMS of 6-h orbit overlaps improves by about a factor of two. Also, we observe similar improvements by comparing our Sentinel-3 orbit solutions to the external combined products. Standard deviation value of Satellite Laser Ranging residuals is reduced by more than 10% for Sentinel-3A and more than 15% for Sentinel-3B satellite by fixing ambiguities to integer values.

On 27 December 2012 it was announced officially that the Chinese Navigation Satellite System BeiDou (BDS) was able to provide operational services over the Asia-Pacific region. The quality of BDS observations was confirmed as comparable with those of GPS, and relative positioning in static and kinematic modes were also demonstrated to be very promising. As Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technology is widely recognized as a method of precise positioning service, especially in real-time, in this contribution we concentrate on the PPP performance using BDS data only. BDS PPP in static, kinematic and simulated real-time kinematic mode is carried out for a regional network with six stations equipped with GPS- and BDS-capable receivers, using precise satellite orbits and clocks estimated from a global BDS tracking network. To validate the derived positions and trajectories, they are compared to the daily PPP solution using GPS data. The assessment confirms that the performance of BDS PPP is very comparable with GPS in terms of both convergence time and accuracy.
