Numerous Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) products are available from remote sensing, encompassing different spatial, temporal, and radiometric resolutions and retrieval techniques. Notwithstanding this variety, all products should be coherent with water inputs. In this work, we have cross-compared precipitation and irrigation with different SSM products: Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS), Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (ESA-CCI) products, Copernicus SSM1km, and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2). The products have been analyzed over two agricultural sites in Italy (Chiese and Capitanata Irrigation Consortia). A Hydrological Consistency Index (HCI) is proposed as a means to measure the coherency between SSM and precipitation/irrigation. Any time SSM is available, a positive or negative consistency is recorded, according to the rainfall registered since the previous measurement and the increase/decrease of SSM. During the irrigation season, some agreements are labeled as “irrigation-driven”. No SSM dataset stands out for a systematic hydrological coherence with the rainfall. Negative consistencies cluster just below 50% in the non-irrigation period and lose 20–30% in the irrigation period. Hybrid datasets perform better (+15–20%) than single-technology measurements, among which active data provide slightly better results (+5–10%) than passive data.

The prediction of spatial and temporal variation of soil water content brings numerous benefits in the studies of soil. However, it requires a considerable number of covariates to be included in the study, complicating the analysis. Integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA) with stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) methodology is a possible approach that allows the inclusion of covariates in an easy way. The current study has been conducted using INLA-SPDE to study soil moisture in the area of the Valencia Anchor Station (VAS), soil moisture validation site for the European Space Agency SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity). The data used were collected in a typical ecosystem of the semiarid Mediterranean conditions, subdivided into physio-hydrological units (SMOS units) which presents a certain degree of internal uniformity with respect to hydrological parameters and capture the spatial and temporal variation of soil moisture at the local fine scale. The paper advances the knowledge of the influence of hydrodynamic properties on VAS soil moisture (texture, porosity/bulk density and soil organic matter and land use). With the goal of understanding the factors that affect the variability of soil moisture in the SMOS pixel (50 km × 50 km), five states of soil moisture are proposed. We observed that the model with all covariates and spatial effect has the lowest DIC value. In addition, the correlation coefficient was close to 1 for the relationship between observed and predicted values. The methodology applied presents the possibility to analyze the significance of different covariates having spatial and temporal effects. This process is substantially faster and more effective than traditional kriging. The findings of this study demonstrate an advancement in that framework, demonstrating that it is faster than previous methodologies, provides significance of individual covariates, is reproducible, and is easy to compare with models.

Hydrological processes are a key component of land surface models and link to the energy budget and carbon cycle. This study assessed the global hydrological processes of the Atmosphere–Vegetation Interaction Model (AVIM) using multiple datasets, including the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), the University of New Hampshire and Global Runoff Data Centre (UNH-GRDC), the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI), the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), and the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) datasets. The comparisons showed that the AVIM gives a reasonable spatial pattern for surface soil moisture and surface runoff, but a less satisfactory spatial pattern for evapotranspiration. The AVIM clearly underestimates surface runoff worldwide and overestimates the surface soil moisture in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, while yielding moderately higher evapotranspiration in arid areas and lower evapotranspiration in low-latitude areas near the equator. The annual cycle of evapotranspiration in the AVIM shows good agreement with the GLEAM dataset, whereas the surface soil moisture in the AVIM has a poor annual cycle relative to the CCI dataset. The AVIM simulates a late start time for snowmelt, which leads to a two-month delay in the peak surface runoff. These results clearly point out the directions required for improvements in the AVIM, which will support future investigations of water–carbon–atmosphere interactions. In addition, the evapotranspiration in the MERRA-2 dataset had an overall good performance comparable with that of the GLEAM dataset, but its surface soil moisture did not perform well when validated against the CCI dataset.

In this study, we address the variations of bare soil surface microwave brightness temperatures and evaluate the performance of a dielectric mixing model over the desert of Kuwait. We use data collected in a field survey and data obtained from NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), European Space Agency Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I). In situ measurements are collected during two intensive field campaigns over bare, flat, and homogeneous soil terrains in the desert of Kuwait. Despite the prevailing dry desert environment, a large range of soil moisture values was monitored, due to precedent rain events and subsequent dry down. The mean relative difference (MRD) is within the range of ±0.005 m3·m−3 during the two sampling days. This reflects consistency of soil moisture in space and time. As predicted by the model, the higher frequency channels (18 to 19 GHz) demonstrate reduced sensitivity to surface soil moisture even in the absence of vegetation, topography and heterogeneity. In the 6.9 to 10.7 GHz range, only the horizontal polarization is sensitive to surface soil moisture. Instead, at the frequency of 1.4 GHz, both polarizations are sensitive to soil moisture and span a large dynamic range as predicted by the model. The error statistics of the difference between observed satellite brightness temperature (Tb) (excluding SMOS data due to radio frequency interference, RFI) and simulated brightness temperatures (Tbs) show values of Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) of 5.05 K at vertical polarization and 4.88 K at horizontal polarization. Such error could be due to the performance of the dielectric mixing model, soil moisture sampling depth and the impact of parametrization of effective temperature and roughness.

Soil moisture is a critical indicator for climate change and agricultural drought, but its measurement is challenging due to large variability with land cover, soil type, time, space and depth. Satellite estimates of soil moisture are highly desirable and have become more widely available over the past decade. This study investigates and compares the performance of four surface soil moisture satellite datasets over Canada, namely, Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Level 3 (SMOS L3), versions 3.3 and 4.2 of European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) soil moisture product and a recent product called SMOS-INRA-CESBIO (SMOS-IC) that contains corrections designed to reduce several known sources of uncertainty in SMOS L3. These datasets were evaluated against in situ networks located in mostly agricultural regions of Canada for the period 2012 to 2014. Two statistical comparison methods were used, namely, metrics for mean soil moisture and median of metrics. The results suggest that, while both methods show similar comparisons for regional networks, over large networks, the median of metrics method is more representative of the overall correlation and variability and is therefore a more appropriate method for evaluating the performance of satellite products. Overall, the SMOS products have higher daily temporal correlations, but larger biases, against in situ soil moisture than the ESA CCI products, with SMOS-IC having higher correlations and smaller variability than SMOS L3. The SMOS products capture daily wetting and drying events better than the ESA CCI products, with the SMOS products capturing at least 75% of observed drying as compared to 55% for the ESA CCI products. Overall, for periods during which there are sufficient observations, both SMOS products are more suitable for agricultural applications over Canada than the ESA CCI products, even though SMOS-IC is able to capture soil moisture variability more accurately than SMOS L3.

Considering variations in surface soil moisture (SSM) is essential in improving crop yield and irrigation scheduling. Today, most remotely sensed soil moisture products have difficulties in resolving irrigation signals at the plot scale. This study aims to use Sentinel-1 radar backscatter and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to estimate SSM at high spatial (10 m) and temporal resolution (at least 5 days) over an agricultural domain. Three supervised machine learning algorithms, multilayer perceptron (MLP), a convolutional neural network (CNN), and linear regression models, were trained to estimate changes in SSM based on the variation in surface reflectance and backscatter over five different crops. Results showed that CNN is the best algorithm as it understands spatial relations and better represents two-dimensional images. Estimated values for SSM were in agreement with in-situ measurements regardless of the crop type, with RMSE=0.0292 (cm3/cm3) and R2=0.92 for the Sentinel-2 derived SSM and RMSE=0.0317 (cm3/cm3) and R2=0.84 for the Sentinel-1 soil moisture data. Moreover, a time series of estimated SSM based on Sentinel-1 (SSM-S1), Sentinel-2 (SSM-S2), and SSM derived from SMAP-Sentinel1 was compared. The developed SSM data showed a significantly higher mean SSM state over irrigated agriculture relative to the rainfed cropland area during the irrigation season. The multiple comparisons (fisher LSD) were tested and found that these two groups are different (pvalue=0.035 in 95% confidence interval). Therefore, by employing the maximum likelihood classification on the SSM data, we managed to map the irrigated agriculture. The overall accuracy of this unsupervised classification is 77%, with a kappa coefficient of 65%.

Abstract. Measurements of the surface soil moisture (SM) content are important for a wide range of applications. Among them, operational hydrology and numerical weather prediction, for instance, need soil moisture information in near-real-time (NRT), typically not later than 3 hours after sensing. The European Space Agency (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite is the first mission specifically designed to measure soil moisture from space. The ESA level 2 SM retrieval algorithm is based on a detailed geophysical modelling and cannot provide SM in NRT. This paper presents the new ESA SMOS NRT SM product. It uses a neural network (NN) to provide SM in NRT. The NN inputs are SMOS brightness temperatures for horizontal and vertical polarizations and incidence angles from 30º to 45º. In addition, the NN uses surface soil temperature from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecast System (IFS). The NN was trained on SMOS Level 2 SM. The swath of the NRT SM retrieval is somewhat narrower (~ 915 km) than that of the L2 SM dataset (~ 1150 km), which implies a slightly lower revisit time. The new SMOS NRT SM product was compared to the SMOS Level 2 SM product. The NRT SM data shows a standard deviation of the difference with respect to the L2 data of
