Video-monitoring can be exploited as a valuable tool to acquire continuous, high-quality information on the evolution of beach morphology at a low cost and, on such basis, perform beach resilience analyses. This manuscript presents preliminary results of an ongoing, long-term monitoring programme of five sandy Italian beaches along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian sea. The project aims at analyzing nearshore morphologic variabilities on a time period of several years, to link them to resilience indicators. The observations indicate that most of the beach width variations can be linked to discrete variations of sandbar systems, and most of all to an offshore migration and decay of the outermost bars. Further, the largest net shoreline displacements across the observation period are experienced by beaches with a clear NOM (Net Offshore Migration)-type evolution of the seabed.

Stock companies play a key role in the economy of any country and the success of these companies depends to a great degree on investors and creditors’ interest who invest in them. Auditors’ reports assume a special position in the decisions taken by investors and creditors. Therefore, the importance of offering high quality information with a view on recent events in the firms (bankruptcy and dissolution, financial scandals, loses suffered by creditors, etc.) becomes clear; moreover, audit reports can prevent these events by creating certain signals. To this end, modern heuristic methods for the prediction of the type of auditor’s opinion are offered in this paper. The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of probabilistic neural network method and to compare it with artificial neural network in order to identify and predict the type of independent auditor’s opinion in Iran in the time period of 2009 to 2013. The patterns used to predict the type of independent auditor’s opinion can be divided into different categories-these categories are becoming more complex and more advanced: single-variable models, multi discriminant analysis, regression function, neural networks, etc. neural networks are getting increasing popularity among researchers for their non-linear and non-parametric properties. Therefore, modern approaches are used in this study to predict the type of auditor’s opinion.

AbstractResort development and coastal beach erosion have led to declines in beach breeding habitat for the near-threatened Malaysian Plover (Charadrius peronii) in the Gulf of Thailand. Semi-natural saltflats may provide supplementary nesting areas. We compared the environmental conditions, incubation behaviour and nesting success of plovers breeding on sandy beaches and saltflats in Thailand. In total we monitored 21 and nine nesting attempts in 2004 (beaches and saltflats, respectively) and 26 and 22 nesting attempts in 2005. Despite higher air temperatures in the saltflats (P < 0.0001), we detected no significant differences in nest attendance (P = 0.542 and P = 0.885 for 2004 and 2005, respectively), number of incubator changes between parents (P = 0.776 and P = 0.823) or number of parental nest departures (P = 0.087 and P = 0.712) during 120 incubation observations on 55 nests. There was also no difference in hatching success between beaches in 2004 (beach = 0.65, saltflat = 0.55; P = 0.692, n = 26) and 2005 (beach = 0.46, saltflat = 0.35; P = 0.539, n = 41). These results suggest that saltflats may provide nesting habitat for Malaysian Plovers and could help enhance overall hatching success rates by reducing nesting densities on beaches. Although there are few remaining intact saltflats in coastal Thailand, there are currently vast areas of abandoned tiger prawn aquaculture ponds that could be rehabilitated into saltflats at relatively low cost. Given the large area of disused aquaculture ponds throughout Thailand and South-East Asia and the substantial human pressure on coastal habitats, there could be considerable conservation benefits to the restoration of aquaculture ponds.

AbstractIn the present study, the enrichment and isolation of textile effluent decolorizing bacteria were carried out in wheat bran (WB) medium. The isolated bacterium Providencia rettgeri strain HSL1 was then tested for decolorization of textile effluent in consortium with a dyestuff degrading fungus Aspergillus ochraceus NCIM 1146. Decolorization study suggests that A. ochraceus NCIM 1146 and P. rettgeri strain HSL1 alone re moves only 6 and 32% of textile effluent American Dye Manufacturing Institute respectively in 30 h at 30 ±0.2°C of microaerophilic incubation, while the fungal-bacterial consortium does 92% ADMI removal within the same time period. The fungal-bacterial consortium exhibited enhanced decolorization rate due to the induction in activities of catalytic enzymes laccase (196%), lignin peroxidase (77%), azoreductase (80%) and NADH-DCIP reductase (84%). The HPLC analysis confirmed the biodegradation of textile effluent into various metabolites. Detoxification studies of textile effluent before and after treatment with fungal-bacterial consortium revealed reduced toxicity of degradation metabolites. The efficient degradation and detoxification by fungal-bacterial consortium pre-grown in agricultural based medium thus suggest a promising approach in designing low-cost treatment technologies for textile effluent.

The purpose of the present work was to study the corrosion protection that relatively low-cost magnesium hydroxide coatings offer to concrete by stabilizing the surface pH. To facilitate the material’s adhesive ability, methyl-cellulose and carboxymethyl-cellulose were used as environmentally friendly additives in three different concentrations, 1, 0.4 and 0.1 wt.% of solids, respectively. The coatings were applied on the surface of concrete blocks, in two different coating thicknesses. A sulfuric acid solution was used to simulate the biologically produced acid in sewer pipes. Sulfuric acid was sprayed on the specimens, while the total amount of acid sprayed was calculated, in order to correspond to a specific reaction’s stoichiometry daily. The surface pH of coated specimens was monitored daily with a surface pH meter. The gypsum production was studied with X-ray diffraction, to evaluate the coatings’ protection. The experimental time period that coatings were consumed was compared with the theoretically consumption time.

Background. Between 2005 and 2012, annual sales of E-bikes in Switzerland increased from 1,792 to 52,941. This continuous and rapid transition from human-powered bicycles to an electric bicycle technology may indicate the increasing demand for low-cost transportation technology in combination with a healthy lifestyle.Material and Methods. In the present study, from April 2012 to September 2013, we retrospectively analysed E-bike accidents treated in the Emergency Department of our hospital by focusing on the following parameters: age, gender, time, period, and cause of the accident, as well as injury and outcome.Results. Patients were predominantly male. The mean age of injured E-cyclists was 47.5 years. The main causes of injury were self-accident. Most injuries were to the head/neck. The mean ISS was 8.48. The outcome showed that 9 patients were treated as outpatients, 9 were inpatients, and 5 patients were kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Only six patients underwent surgery (S).Discussion. This is the first attempt to evaluate E-bike injuries in Switzerland in an acute hospital setting. Since there is increasing popular preference for E-bikes as means of transportation and injuries to the head or neck are prevalent among E-cyclists, the hazard should not to be underestimated.

ABSTRACTThe kinetic performance of metallocene type catalysts as well as their instantaneous activity is determined on line by two independent methods in the semi-batch polymerization of ethylene via metallocenes. On the basis of first-principles, both methods are described and guidelines for their implementation at a laboratory scale reactor are offered. Polymerization tests were conducted with two heterogenized metallocene catalysts showing that the direct method (based on ethylene flow measurement) and also the calorimetric method (based on energy balances) reported equivalent high quality information. The calorimetric method here developed can be readily used by the chemical practitioner as the notions and tools required for its implantation are easily grasped. It is noted that the calorimetric method has the advantage of requiring a low cost instrumentation (only thermocouples) whereas the direct method needs a relatively more sophisticated equipment (mass flow meter).

In a business-to-consumer (B2C) context, customers order more frequently and in smaller quantities, resulting in a high number of consignments. Moreover, online shoppers expect a fast and accurate delivery at low cost or even free. To survive in such a market, companies can no longer optimise individual supply chain processes, but need to integrate several activities. In this article, the integrated order picking-vehicle routing problem is analysed in an e-commerce environment. In previous research, a mathematical programming formulation has been formulated in literature but only small-size instances can be solved to optimality. Two picking policies are studied: discrete order picking and batch order picking. The influence of various problem contexts on the value of integration is investigated: a small picking time period, outsourcing to 3PL service providers, and a dynamic environment context.

The aim of this study is technical and statistical evaluation of wastewater treatment plants existing at the holiday resorts in areas surrounding Izmir City. The study was carried out in the time period from August to September 2018. Within the scope of the study, 150 holiday resorts were investigated and listed. The necessary permissions were obtained and the treatment plants were visited at their current locations. Most of the wastewater treatment plants are embedded in the ground and are referred to as package treatment systems. They are used at holiday resorts for many reasons, such as smell and noise control. Many parameters have been considered within the scope of the study, such as installed power of the plant, influent wastewater flow and pollutant concentration, the properties of the sludge, sludge disposal methods, effluent wastewater parameters, the method and location of effluent water discharge, operation period of the wastewater treatment plant. As a result of this study, it has been found that the low cost package treatment systems were generally preferred. The systems that required most energy were the blowers. In order to provide clean and smooth environment, the use of central wastewater treatment plants is more suitable than the use of package treatment systems

The feasibility of mass marking western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, beetles with fluorescent powder was studied in field cages and with release-recapture. In field cage studies, no significant (P > 0.05) relationship was found between beetles marked with red or green fluorescent powder and beetle mortality. Red marks on beetles were visible with the unaided eye for at least 10 days after marking; however, a binocular microscope was needed to detect green marks on 50% of the individuals after only 4 days. Marking females with flourescent powder did not significantly affect ovarian development. From two releases of red-marked beetles made in the center of a 16 × 40.5-m cornfield, 6.5% of 3,909 and 8.4% of 1,873 adults were recaptured during trapping periods of 10 to 13 days by semiochemical-treated and blank sticky traps placed around the perimeter or within the field. Ovarian development of the marked females recaptured with the traps was not significantly different from that of unmarked beetles caught on the same traps during the same time period.
