Damage significantly influences response of a strain sensor only if it occurs in the proximity of the sensor. Thus, two-dimensional (2D) sensing sheets covering large areas offer reliable early-stage damage detection for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. This paper presents a scalable sensing sheet design consisting of a dense array of thin-film resistive strain sensors. The sensing sheet is fabricated using flexible printed circuit board (Flex-PCB) manufacturing process which enables low-cost and high-volume sensors that can cover large areas. The lab tests on an aluminum beam showed the sheet has a gauge factor of 2.1 and has a low drift of 1.5 μ ϵ / d a y . The field test on a pedestrian bridge showed the sheet is sensitive enough to track strain induced by the bridge’s temperature variations. The strain measured by the sheet had a root-mean-square (RMS) error of 7 μ ϵ r m s compared to a reference strain on the surface, extrapolated from fiber-optic sensors embedded within the bridge structure. The field tests on an existing crack showed that the sensing sheet can track the early-stage damage growth, where it sensed 600 μ ϵ peak strain, whereas the nearby sensors on a damage-free surface did not observe significant strain change.

This paper presents ongoing work by the authors to implement real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for operational research-scale wind turbine blades. The authors have been investigating and assessing the performance of several techniques for SHM of wind turbine blades using piezoelectric active sensors. Following a series of laboratory vibration and fatigue tests, these techniques are being implemented using embedded systems developed by the authors. These embedded systems are being deployed on operating wind turbine platforms, including a 20-meter rotor diameter turbine, located in Bushland, TX, and a 4.5-meter rotor diameter turbine, located in Los Alamos, NM. The SHM approach includes measurements over multiple frequency ranges, in which diffuse ultrasonic waves are excited and recorded using an active sensing system, and the blades global ambient vibration response is recorded using a passive sensing system. These dual measurement types provide a means of correlating the effect of potential damage to changes in the global structural behavior of the blade. In order to provide a backdrop for the sensors and systems currently installed in the field, recent damage detection results for laboratory-based wind turbine blade experiments are reviewed. Our recent and ongoing experimental platforms for field tests are described, and experimental results from these field tests are presented. LA-UR-12-24691.

Cracking is a common type of failure in machines and structures. Cracks must be detected at an early stage before catastrophic failure. In structural health monitoring, changes in the vibration characteristics of the structure can be utilized in damage detection. A fatigue crack with alternating contact and non-contact phases results in a non-linear behaviour. This type of damage was simulated with a finite element model of a simply supported beam. The structure was monitored with a sensor array measuring transverse accelerations under random excitation. The objective was to determine the smallest crack length that can be detected. The effect of the sensor locations was also studied. Damage detection was performed using the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) in time domain followed by principal component analysis (PCA). Extreme value statistics (EVS) were used for novelty detection. It was found that a crack in the bottom of the midspan could be detected once the crack length exceeded 10% of the beam height. The crack was correctly localized using the monitoring data.

Aging of buildings during their service life has attracted the attention of researchers on structural health monitoring (SHM). This paper is related with detecting damage in building structures at the earliest possible stage during seismic activity to facilitate decision-making on evacuation before physical inspection is possible. For this, a simple method for damage assessment is introduced to identify the damage story of multistory buildings from acceleration measurements under a wave propagation approach. In this work, damage is assumed as reduction in shear wave velocities and changes in damping ratios that are directly related with stiffness loss. Most damage detection methods are off-line processes; this is not the case with this method. First, a real-time identification system is introduced to estimate the current parameters to be compared with nominal values to detect any changes in the characteristics that may indicate damage in the building. In addition, this identification system is robust to constant disturbances and measurement noise. The time needed to complete parameter identification is shorter compared to the typically wave method, and the damage assessment can keep up with the data flow in real time. Finally, using a robust threshold, postprocess of the compared signal is performed to find the location of the possible damage. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated through experiments on a reduced-scale five-story building, showing the ability of the proposed method to improve early stage structural health monitoring.

ABSTRACTStructural Health Monitoring (SHM) takes advantage of the recent advances in nanotechnology and sensing in order to monitor the behavior of a structure, assess its performance and identify damage at an early stage. Monitoring the state of strain throughout an entire structure is essential to determine its state of stress, detect potential residual stresses after fabrication, and also to help to establish its integrity. The Carbon nanotube thread was integrated into three-dimensional braiding materials and used for the first time as a sensor to monitor strain and also to detect damage in the three-dimensional braided composite material.In this paper a literature review about the application of carbon nanotubes thread for sensors and smart materials used for SHM of braiding structures is presented. The test data show the braided angle is important parameter for structural health monitoring of three-dimensional. The research will provide a new integrated and distributed technologies for the built-in carbon nanotube sensor to detect the health of composite. The subject will provide the new idea and method for the development of smart composite materials research and application.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, which are also considered as online nondestructive testing methods, are significant in modern structural engineering due to their ability to guarantee structure safety while reducing maintenance cost. It is often necessary to combine different SHM methods to achieve a more reliable damage detection result. However, the hardware of the SHM systems is usually expensive, bulky, and heavy when they are designed separately. Therefore, this paper proposes a three-layer architecture for designing an integrated multi-function SHM system to achieve a small, lightweight, and low power consumption SHM system. Based on the architecture, an integrated SHM system with impact monitoring and electromechanical impedance measurement is developed. In addition, a scheduling module is developed to manage the two functions of the system. Furthermore, an integrated interface is developed to transfer the data and the command. Then, an integrated printed circuit board is designed and manufactured to achieve the aforementioned functions. The designed system is applied for impact monitoring and damage detection for a supporting structure of a sailplane.

A variety of sensor systems have been developed to monitor the structural health status of buildings and infrastructures. However, most sensor systems for structural health monitoring (SHM) are difficult to use in extreme conditions, such as a fire situation, because of their vulnerability to high temperature and physical shocks, as well as time-consuming installation process. Here, we present a smart ball sensor (SBS) that can be immediately installed on surfaces of structures, stably measure vital SHM data in real time and wirelessly transmit the data in a high-temperature fire situation. The smart ball sensor mainly consists of sensor and data transmission module, heat insulator and adhesive module. With the integrated device configuration, the SBS can be strongly attached to the target surface with maximum adhesion force of 233.7-N and stably detect acceleration and temperature of the structure without damaging the key modules of the systems even at high temperatures of up to 500 °C while ensuring wireless transmission of the data. Field tests for a model pre-engineered building (PEB) structure demonstrate the validity of the smart ball sensor as an instantly deployable, high-temperature SHM system. This SBS can be used for SHM of a wider variety of structures and buildings beyond PEB structures.

In this study a structural health monitoring (SHM) fastener, with built-in eddy current sensors for in-situ monitoring of fatigue cracks at hole locations in layered metallic joints was developed. This presents an optimal method of sensor integration for early stage detection of these cracks, which are among of the most common forms of damage in airframes. Thin, conformable eddy current sensors optimized for in-hole flaw detection [1] and a method of mechanical integration and complete data acquisition and software system are discussed. Results from fatigue tests of single layer and multi-layer specimens are presented in addition to results from bench-top flaw detection tests as a means of experimental validation of the system.
