Statistical features extraction from bearing fault signals requires a substantial level of knowledge and domain expertise. Furthermore, existing feature extraction techniques are mostly confined to selective feature extraction methods namely, time-domain, frequency-domain, or time-frequency domain statistical parameters. Vibration signals of bearing fault are highly non-linear and non-stationary making it cumbersome to extract relevant information for existing methodologies. This process even became more complicated when the bearing operates at variable speeds and load conditions. To address these challenges, this study develops an autonomous diagnostic system that combines signal-to-image transformation techniques for multi-domain information with convolutional neural network (CNN)-aided multitask learning (MTL). To address variable operating conditions, a composite color image is created by fusing information from multi-domains, such as the raw time-domain signal, the spectrum of the time-domain signal, and the envelope spectrum of the time-frequency analysis. This 2-D composite image, named multi-domain fusion-based vibration imaging (MDFVI), is highly effective in generating a unique pattern even with variable speeds and loads. Following that, these MDFVI images are fed to the proposed MTL-based CNN architecture to identify faults in variable speed and health conditions concurrently. The proposed method is tested on two benchmark datasets from the bearing experiment. The experimental results suggested that the proposed method outperformed state-of-the-arts in both datasets.

Rolling bearings are present ubiquitously in industrial fields; timely fault diagnosis is of crucial significance in avoiding serious catastrophe. The extraction of ideal fault feature is a challenging task in vibration-based bearing fault detection. In this article, a novel method called class-information–incorporated kernel entropy component analysis is proposed for bearing fault diagnosis. The method is developed based on the Hebbian learning theory of neural network and the kernel entropy component analysis which attempts to compress the most Renyi quadratic entropy of input dataset after dimension reduction and presents a good performance for nonlinear feature extraction. Class-information–incorporated kernel entropy component analysis can take advantage of the label information of training samples to guide dimensional reduction and still follow the same simple mathematical formulation as kernel entropy component analysis. The high-dimensional feature dataset including time-domain, frequency-domain, and time–frequency domain characteristic parameters is first derived from the vibration signals. Then, the intrinsic geometric features are extracted by class-information–incorporated kernel entropy component analysis, and a classification strategy based on fusion information is applied to recognize different operating conditions of bearings. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract This paper provides an example of the application of the acoustic emission (AE) method for the diagnosis of technical conditions of a three-phase on-load tap-changer (OLTC) GIII type. The measurements were performed for an amount of 10 items of OLTCs, installed in power transformers with a capacity of 250 MVA. The study was conducted in two different OLTC operating conditions during the tapping process: under load and free running conditions. The analysis of the measurement results was made in both time domain and time-frequency domain. The description of the AE signals generated by the OLTC in the time domain was performed using the analysis of waveforms and determined characteristic times. Within the time-frequency domain the measured signals were described by short-time Fourier transform spectrograms.

Due to the difficulty that excessive feature dimension in fault diagnosis of rolling bearing will lead to the decrease of classification accuracy, a fault diagnosis method based on Xgboost algorithm feature extraction is proposed. When the Xgboost algorithm classifies features, it generates an order of importance of the input features. The time domain features were extracted from the vibration signal of the rolling bearing, the time-frequency features were formed by the singular value of the modal components that were decomposed by the variational mode decomposition. Firstly, the extracted time domain and time-frequency domain features were input into the support vector machine respectively to observe the fault diagnosis accuracy. Then, Xgboost algorithm was used to rank the importance of features and got the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Finally, important features were extracted and the extracted features were input into the support vector machine to observe the fault diagnosis accuracy. The result shows that the fault diagnosis accuracy of rolling bearing is improved after important feature extraction in time domain and time-frequency domain by Xgboost.

The path of tire pattern’s impact on interior noise and vibration was analyzed. The same type tires with six kinds of different tread pattern were selected as the investigating subjects, and the interior measuring points’ vibration and noise signals of different tires were measured under full load condition. The basic theory of Wavelet Transform (WT) and its signal reconstruction principle were researched, and 1/3 octave Morlet wavelet was induced and analyzed. The vibration and noise signals of measuring points were transformed by using 1/3 octave Morlet wavelet, distribution features of vibration and noise signals of six tires with different tread pattern were made a comparison in time domain and frequency domain, and the distinct results of different tires were achieved. The advantage of WT in the aspect of time-frequency analysis for time domain signal is revealed.

Inherent in the construction of many experimental apparatus designed to measure the hydro/aerodynamic forces of rotating machinery are features that contribute undesirable parasitic forces to the measured or test forces. Typically, these parasitic forces are due to seals, drive couplings, and hydraulic and/or inertial unbalance. To obtain accurate and sensitive measurement of the hydro/aerodynamic forces in these situations, it is necessary to subtract the parasitic forces from the test forces. In general, both the test forces and the parasitic forces will be dependent on the system operating conditions including the specific motion of the rotor. Therefore, to properly remove the parasitic forces the vibration orbits and operating conditions must be the same in tests for determining the hydro/aerodynamic forces and tests for determining the parasitic forces. This, in turn, necessitates a means by which the test rotor’s motion can be accurately controlled to an arbitrarily defined trajectory. Here in, an interrupt-driven multiple harmonic open-loop controller was developed and implemented on a laboratory centrifugal pump rotor supported in magnetic bearings (active load cells) for this purpose. This allowed the simultaneous control of subharmonic, synchronous, and superharmonic rotor vibration frequencies with each frequency independently forced to some user defined orbital path. The open-loop controller was implemented on a standard PC using commercially available analog input and output cards. All analog input and output functions, transformation of the position signals from the time domain to the frequency domain, and transformation of the open-loop control signals from the frequency domain to the time domain were performed in an interrupt service routine. Rotor vibration was attenuated to the noise floor, vibration amplitude ≈0.2 μm, or forced to a user specified orbital trajectory. Between the whirl frequencies of 14 and 2 times running speed, the orbit semi-major and semi-minor axis magnitudes were controlled to within 0.5% of the requested axis magnitudes. The ellipse angles and amplitude phase angles of the imposed orbits were within 0.3 deg and 1.0 deg, respectively, of their requested counterparts.

Aiming at the local fault diagnosis of planetary gearbox gears, a feature extraction method based on improved dynamic time warping (IDTW) is proposed. As a calibration matching algorithm, the dynamic time warping method can detect the differences between a set of time-domain signals. This paper applies the method to fault diagnosis. The method is simpler and more intuitive than feature extraction methods in the frequency domain and the time-frequency domain, avoiding their limitations and disadvantages. Due to the shortcomings of complex calculation, singularity and poor robustness, the paper proposes an improved method. Finally, the method is verified by envelope spectral feature analysis and the local fault diagnosis of gears is realised.

To detect and recognize any type of events over the perimeter security system, this article proposes a fiber-optic vibration pattern recognition method based on the combination of time-domain features and time-frequency domain features. The performance parameters (event recognition, event location, and event classification) are very important and describe the validity of this article. The pattern recognition method is precisely based on the empirical mode decomposition of time-frequency entropy and center-of-gravity frequency. It implements the function of identifying and classifying the event (intrusions or non-intrusion) over the perimeter to secure. To achieve this method, the first-level prejudgment is performed according to the time-domain features of the vibration signal, and the second-level prediction is carried out through time-frequency analysis. The time-frequency distribution of the signal is obtained by empirical mode decomposition and Hilbert transform and then the time-frequency entropy and center-of-gravity frequency are used to form the time-frequency domain features, that is, combined with the time-domain features to form feature vectors. Multiple types of probabilistic neural networks are identified to determine whether there are intrusions and the intrusion types. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and reliable in identifying and classifying the type of event.

Feature extraction is one of the most difficult aspects of mechanical fault diagnosis, and it is directly related to the accuracy of bearing fault diagnosis. In this study, improved permutation entropy (IPE) is defined as the feature for bearing fault diagnosis. In this method, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), a self-adaptive time-frequency analysis method, is used to process the vibration signals, and a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can thus be obtained. A feature extraction strategy based on statistical analysis is then presented for IPE, where the so-called optimal number of permutation entropy (PE) values used for an IPE is adaptively selected. The obtained IPE-based samples are then input to a support vector machine (SVM) model. Subsequently, a trained SVM can be constructed as the classifier for bearing fault diagnosis. Finally, experimental vibration signals are applied to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed method can effectively and accurately diagnose bearing faults, such as inner race faults, outer race faults, and ball faults.
