Traffic barriers represent one of the basic road safety features. There are several types of traffic barriers based on the material from which they are made of and their location. Bridge structures are usually fitted with steel barriers. A steel barrier is, in fact, a relatively complex system linking individual steel elements, which, as a whole, has to meet the requirements given by normative regulations. In order for the steel barriers to fulfill their function and prevent the catastrophic consequences of traffic accidents, it is absolutely necessary to ensure their correct installation on the bridge structure. It seemed until recently that carrying out quality inspections of steel barriers installation, i.e., their anchoring into the concrete ledges, was a relatively complicated time- and money-consuming process, and that is why inspections of the correct anchoring installation in new or existing barriers were not carried out as standard. This paper thoroughly describes in detail the non-destructive ultrasonic pulse method, with which the anchoring of steel barriers on selected bridge structures is being checked. From the measurements and statistical evaluation of the results, it is apparent that carrying out inspections of the anchoring of these road safety features should be considered routine, and at the same time, the inspection of anchoring quality should be required by law in order to ensure the safety of road traffic.

Ultrasonic pulse method is a non-destructive testing method used for testing materials. For concrete, it is used mostly for determination of dynamic elasticity modulus, compressive strength, homogeneity, to determine depth of cracks or as a supportive method for testing frost resistance. Applicability of using ultrasonic pulse method for evaluation of degradation of concrete exposed to high temperature was proved. This method is unambiguously utilizable for rationalization of experimental work focused on optimization of composition of concrete resistant to high temperatures. Ultrasonic pulse method can be also used for mapping the degree of degradation of concrete elements and structures, which can be measured by means of direct sounding. Appropriateness of the use of ultrasonic pulse method for evaluation of degradation of concrete exposed to high temperature was proved. This method is unambiguously applicable for rationalization of experimental work focused on optimization of composition of concrete resistant to high temperatures. Present paper is focused on the experimental assessment of three sandstones from different quarries. Mechanical testing was carried out besides water absorption test and determination of frost resistance what is the crucial material parameter for all types of porous rocks. Gradual deterioration due to action of frost was monitored using non-destructive testing – ultrasonic pulse method. Obtained results well describe failure mechanism of studied sandstones of different basic physical properties. It was conducted that main part of deterioration was performed at the beginning of the freeze-thaw cycling.

Metallic corrosion is a big challenge affecting many sectors in a nation’s economy. Necessary corrosion prevention actions have to be taken in order to maintain the integrity of engineering assets susceptible to corrosion. This paper proposes a holistic framework to support the management of corrosion in metallic structures. It is a fully automation corrosion assessment process, with risk updated by Bayesian theory. Through analyzing the thickness data measured by non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, the influence of corrosion on the component can be estimated using statistical methods, which will enable users to make decisions on maintenance based on quantitative information. A case study using corrosion data from a steel bridge is included to demonstrate the proposed framework. It improved the conventional corrosion analysis method by the proposed statistical approach using representative thickness data, which aims to take full use of the remaining life. This model can be adapted to a wide range of metallic structure suffering from corrosion damage.

The results of lengthy thorough investigations into traffic safety situation show that the percentage of pedestrians getting involved in road traffic accidents on Lithuanian roads is significantly higher (more than 33 % of the total number of injury and fatal accidents) than that compared to the other European Union member-states. The article studies traffic safety problems and their factors causing the largest influence on the occurrence of these accidents. Considering valuable experience gained by foreign countries, investigation was carried out to establish general and main factors causing insufficient road safety conditions and significance of these factors to road safety. The article also shows the main activity improving road safety in Lithuania and discusses the effectiveness of strategic and local (temporary and long term) measures to improve conditions for pedestrian road safety.

Introduction: Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the eighth leading cause of death globally, and the leading cause of death in Bangladesh. The road safety situation in Bangladesh has been deteriorating with increasing number of road accident deaths, largely as direct consequences of rapid growth in population, motorization, urbanization and lack of investment in road safety. Objectives: To describe the injury characteristics of road traffic accidents cases that reported at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional hospital based study was conducted on all the RTA cases reported to medical inspection room CMH, Dhaka from 01 March to 30 June 2010. A total of 126 RTA victims irrespective of age and sex were included, data were collected by face to face interview using a pre-tested questionnaire. Results: A total of 126 road traffic accident victims both sexes were studied. The majority of the study subjects were men 103 (81.7%) and most of them were in 31-40 years group (27%), Muslims (98.41%) were the majority. In our study regarding educational qualification of RTA victims most of them were SSC qualified (44’4%) and primary level (15.1%). Military services holder (45.2%) was the majority of road traffic crash victims. Bus/Minibus (32.5%) was responsible for the majority of road traffic crashes and motor vehicle passengers (42.9%) were main victims. Laceration & cut injury were (38.1%) and multiple injury (18.3%) were the most common injury. Main roads (49.2%) were the commonest site of the accidents.  Regarding place of occurrence main roads 62 (49.2%) was the most common site and noon 41 (32.5%) was the most common time of occurrence of accidents. Conclusion: Road traffic crashes constitute a major public health problem in our setting and contribute significantly to unacceptably high morbidity and mortality. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of road traffic crashes is necessary to reduce the morbidity and mortality resulting from these injuries. Each year more than three thousand people die and get serious injuries in traffic accidents. Count data model provide more precise tools for planners and decision makers to conduct proactive road safety planning.We analyzed the exploratory research of Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) and furthermore explores the factors affecting the RTAs frequency in 36 districts of the Punjab over a time period of three years (July 1, 2013 June 30, 2016) with monthly data using panel count data models. Among the models considered, the random parameters Poisson panel count data model is found to fit the data best. The exploratory analysis shows that highly dense populated districts with large number of registered vehicles causes more accidents as compared to low density populated districts. It is found that, most of the variables used to control the variation in the frequency of RTAs counts play vital role with higher significance levels. The application of regression analysis and modeling of RTAs at district level in Punjab will help to identification of districts with high RTAs rates and this could help more efficient road safety management in the Punjab.

Every year we lose many young road users in road traffic accidents. Based on traffic accident data issued by the Indonesian National Police in 2017, the number of casualties was highest in the age group 15-19, with 3,496 minor injuries, 400 seriously injured and 535 deaths. This condition is very alarming considering that student as the nation's next generation lose their future due to the accidents. This figure does not include other traffic violations, not having a driver license, not wearing a helmet, driving opposite the direction, those given ticket and verbal reprimand. To reduce traffic accident for young road user, road safety campaigns were organized in many schools in Jakarta. This activity aims to socialize the road safety program to increase road safety awareness among young road users/students including the dissemination of Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation. Another purpose of this program is to accompany school administrators to set up a School Safe Zone (ZoSS), a location on particular roads in the school environment that are time-based speed zone to set the speed of the vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to promote the road safety campaigns strategies by considering various campaign tools.

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a technique to determine the integrity of a material, component or structure. The commonly NDT methods used for the concrete are dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity. The dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete is related to the structural stiffness and deformation process of concrete structures, and is highly sensitive to the cracking. The velocity of ultrasonic pulses travelling in a solid material depends on the density and elastic properties of that material. Non-destructive testing namely, dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity was measured for high strength concrete incorporating cementitious composites. Results of dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity are reported and their relationships with compressive strength are presented. It has been found that NDT is reasonably good and reliable tool to measure the property of concrete which also gives the fair indication of the compressive strength development.

В статье анализируется информативность основных показателей аварийности, возможные неверные представления о повышении безопасности дорожного движения при снижении количества ДТП, необходимость учета степени безопасности дорожной сети при выборе мер, направленных на повышение безопасности дорожного движения, а также комплесная оценка этих мер и степени безопасности дорожной сети. The article analyzes the informativeness of the main indicators of accidents, possible misconceptions about improving road safety while reducing the number of accidents, as well as the need to take into account the degree of road safety when choosing measures aimed at improving road safety, assessing such measures in combination with the degree of road network safety.
