Education for sustainable development has been addressed by professionals, authorities, and a number of research studies in the last decades, and yet the results are not clearly visible. Teachers as agents of a new mindset do not seem to understand the ways of approaching raising awareness of the issues of global challenges. This study investigated the possibility of raising the extent of applying critical thinking to the problem-solving issues of a group of student teachers in their initial training. The sample consisted of 48 student teachers. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used: namely, a questionnaire, content analysis, and focus group interviews. An archive of the students’ materials was also used for content analysis. In the data analysis, inter-rater reliability, as well as parametric (t-test) and non-parametric tests (Mann–Whitney U test) were applied. The results of the study provide evidence of the positive impact of the use of case studies in teaching pre-service teachers on the development of their critical thinking skills. It can be concluded that it should not be taken for granted that teachers automatically know how to develop the competencies that are necessary for sustainable development (SD). Instead, teacher education institutions need to incorporate thorough training that focusses on education for sustainable development (ESD) into the entire teacher programme in order to make sure that the teachers leave their initial training well prepared for guaranteeing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The aim of this study is to examine the mathematical creativity of individuals who think they have creative thinking skills. Forty-four teachers who work in private schools participated in this study and they have their pedagogical formation training from a public university in order to be a public teacher. Also participants have at least one year of experience. Mixed method research is defined as combining qualitative and quantitative methods, approaches and concepts in successive studies (Creswell, 2003). This study was determined as a mixed method research since data first analyzed by content analysis (qualitative) and then relationship and comparison analysis (quantitative). In order to analyse problem situation of the study, two testing instruments one of which is ready to use were utilized. Problem solving and problem posing test as two items was developed by the researcher. On item was given to participants as a geometry problem in the testing instrument and they were asked to solve this problem by using as many different methods as they can. The other item was given to participants as a semi-structured geometry situation. They were asked to pose as many problems as they can by using this situation. Data obtained from solving draft were divided into categories in terms of flexibility, fluency and originality according to content analysis from qualitative data analyses for each participants. As a result of the study, according to the teachers’ creativity that they stated, we can talk about their mathematical creativity only if they can pose an authentic problem.

Developing critical and collaborative thinking skills among learners was of significant importance in the 21st-century era. In this study, the researcher applied teaching and learning based on Research-Based Learning (RBL) to know the level of students critical thinking skill. The number of research samples was 30 students. This study used a triangulation research method, namely a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The quantitative method was obtained by using a learning outcome test and the qualitative method is obtained using a questionnaire and interview. Then the data that has been collected was analyzed using a t-test. Four students were chosen to represent critical thinking level 4, 13 students were chosen to represent Critical Thinking level 3, and 6 students were chosen to represent critical thinking level 2, 4 students were chosen to represent critical thinking level 1, and 3 students were chosen to represent critical thinking level 0. More subjects would be involved until the data was saturated. Students on low critical thinking were at Level 0. Based on the interpretation result of the t-test value, there was a significant difference between the control class and the experimental class, proved by the 0.000 figure in the statistical analysis. Therefore, it proved a significant difference in learning outcomes. However, the data that we obtained present a significant difference between the control class and the experimental class below 0.05. After we interpreted t-tabel = 2.04 on degrees of freedom 0.025, t-count of 0.000 was evident. Thus, a hypothesis was accepted since it was below 0.025. Qualitative methods show the results of interviews with 2 students.

Early childhood education for sustainable development roots on environmental, socio-cultural and economic ground for encouraging lifelong learning and improving values and behaviors that support sustainable development such as use of natural resources, cultural awareness, gender equality, and democracy. Educational drama contributes to the development of skills necessary for sustainable development such as communication, cooperation and decision-making. This study has two main objectives: the former is to raise awareness and to develop these skills of pre-service teachers by organizing drama activities in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD); the later objective is to implement and to evaluate the activities based on the data collected from pre-service teachers and from one specific pre-school teacher, in whose classroom these activities were carried out. Phenomenographic approach was adapted for the current study and the data was collected through interviews, photos, and field notes. The study shows that the drama activities increase awareness and improve skills for ESD within pre-service teachers. Furthermore, opinions and experiences of the pre-service teachers and the preschool teacher state that drama has positive impact on learning of pre-school children about sustainable development.

This study originated from the lack of utilization of learning media during the learning process. Teaching methods used by teachers are less varied so that learners are only trained in cognitive abilities only while for high-level thinking skills such as critical thinking ability is still low. One alternative that can be done to improve the skills of critical thinking is to utilize the Software Tracker media. This study aims to determine the improvement of critical thinking skills of learners through the use of Software Tracker media on the material impulse and momentum. The research method used is Pre-Experiment with design One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample of this research using Purposive Sampling technique. The research instrument used in this research is the critical thinking skills of the students of impulse material and momentum to measure the critical thinking ability of learners. The data analysis technique uses normality test, and t test to normalized n-gain value from pretest and posttest value of learners using Microsoft Excel. The results showed that the critical thinking skills of learners increased after utilizing the Software Tracker media during learning. The result of this research is proved from the significant value of ttable test of 1.691 while t count is 24.53 which means H0 is rejected and Ha accepted. The results of this study indicate that the use of Software Tracker media on the material impulse and momentum have a positive impact on improving the critical thinking skills of learners.

Abstract This article introduces and discusses a study that aims at illuminating discursive representations of education for sustainable development (henceforth – ESD) by means of compiling and analysing a corpus of policy documents written by English medium instruction (EMI) secondary schools in Estonia and Norway, respectively. Informed by the constructivist approach (Foucault, 1981), discursive representations of ESD in the study were operationalised as discursive strategies that were employed in naming, referring to, and providing an evaluative perspective to ESD-related topics. In this study, the corpus of policy documents published by EMI secondary schools in Estonia and Norway was collected in order to analyse discursive representations of ESD by means of applying a qualitative content analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that the discursive representations of ESD were similarly construed in policy documents written and communicated by EMI secondary schools in Estonia and Norway. Those findings were further discussed in the article in conjunction with their didactic implications.
