The focus of this paper is on the impact of internal organizational factors on the inappropriate job performance and behaviour of employees. The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) in South Africa has been experiencing inappropriate job behaviour and performance of some of its workers. They include misappropriation of resources, maladministration, mismanagement, lack of service delivery, fraud, and corruption. Since many BCMM workers have various levels of formal education, such practices are not expected, because the structural-functionalist assumption is that formal education is a solution to societal challenges. Since inappropriate job behaviour and performance continue to be reported in spite of the formal education of BCMM workers, this study seeks to investigate how the two phenomena co-exist. It thus seeks to put into perspective the paradoxical co-existence of formal education with inappropriate job behaviour and performance, by focusing on the BCMM as a case-study. For data collection, this study used the mixed method approach; that is, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings revealed structural, systemic, and human impediments to labour productivity in the BCMM. By and large, the unquestioning acceptance of the assumption that the skills shortage is responsible for inappropriate workers job performance and behaviour is discredited by the evidence of skilled personnel who exercise their responsibilities in a manner that undermines their occupational requirements. Therefore, this exploratory study affirms that the narrow conception of skills, that privileges job-specific capabilities, is not enough for cultivating a workforce with appropriate job behaviour and performance practices.

The success of the microfinance movement is beyond doubt. However, as the scope of the sector increased and commercialised, some problems of it became evident. Issue of profitability and sustainability of Microfinance institutions (MFIs) and, use of external capital by them are the two most debatable issues of the microfinance sector. The current study investigates these issues by targeting MFIs and consultants of microfinance sector located in UK. These MFIs and consultants have operations in different poor and developing countries. The study found that believing that MFIs can alone eliminate poverty is a fallacy. Any such belief by the policymakers will make further delay in eradicating poverty. The study also found that financial sustainability of microfinance seems to remain unachievable for most of the MFIs and, that there are fair chances of having trade-off between financial performance and social performance for those MFIs. On this line of thought, the study concludes by arguing that microfinance cannot be treated only as a substitute of the traditional financial services.

This chapter will focus on the prospects of inter-religious dialogue as a means of fostering the Israeli-Palestinian peacebuilding process, both from a theoretical and empirical perspectives. The two authors come from the disciplines of political science and social psychology and employ qualitative and quantitative methods, respectively. Although counter-intuitive as part of an ongoing research project, the authors suggest that, in line with other research, religion can indeed serve as a bridge between Israelis and Palestinians and not merely act as an escalatory influence as is commonly assumed. The authors have drawn on earlier work of these researchers and others, which have provided empirical evidence over time that inter-religious dialogue encounters between Israelis and Palestinians can help nurture perception change based on social psychological dynamics for intergroup relations as both sides discover strong commonalities between their respective faiths. This opportunity also offers a means to mutually explore the basis of the narratives of both sides in a non-confrontational atmosphere. Perception change between groups locked in conflict is an essential element for moderating strife and encouraging dialogue. However, in the case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict clashing narratives––as succinctly analyzed in the Peel Commission Report of 1937––rooted in religious and cultural identity informs the conflict and must be addressed through dialogue with the hope of mutual accommodation. Ideally, the transcendent elements of religion can also serve as positive points of meeting. Research data collected primarily from the work of the Interfaith Encounter Association (IEA) will be presented to demonstrate the advantages of the inter-religious approach. In addition, the authors also refer to the case study of a special annual inter-religious dialogue by mid-level leadership in the “spirit of social partnership” in the Jewish-Arab City of Akko (in Northern Israel) in the context of an annual graduate seminar organized by the first author.

The rapid population growth and the ongoing globalization of the economies result in increased competitiveness. Customers now prefer organizations’ that do not just meet but also exceed their needs. Vertical Integration (VI) has been used as a vital tool to increase competitiveness by aligning organizational functions and promoting new opportunities through supply chain management. Though, there has been ambiguity in findings on the impact of vertical integration on financial performance worldwide. Hence, the purpose of this study is to provide empirical evidence regarding the impact of vertical integration on financial performance in African emerging economies, a case study of Olam Nigeria Limited. The secondary data was obtained from Olam's cross-sectional financial record between 2010-2018, and the primary data was from 175 respondents out of the 183 questionnaires administered to the employee sample frame. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings indicate a positive impact between the components of vertical integration and financial performance measures in Olam Nigeria Limited. This study is one of the first studies conducted in emerging economies after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) upgraded 9 African countries, including Nigeria. These findings can serve as a strategic, operational guide for business managers who may be considering vertical integration to improve their financial performance. This study also adds to the secondary source on the subject matter in the Nigerian Agribusiness sector, and it reiterates the three theories: transaction cost theory, resource-based theory, and property rights theory. However, the financial performance measurement metrics are limited to Olam's recommended parameters to gauge its progress, and the study did not cover the moderating variables.

Corporate governance structures are expected to help a firm have better financial performance through giving proper decision-making (Shivani, Jain, & Yadav, 2017). In recent years, along with the completing process of the business environment, the corporate governance framework in Vietnam has also been gradually built and implemented. However, corporate governance in Vietnam still has some limitations. This study is conducted to investigate the impact level of corporate governance on the financial performance of warehouse transportation firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) of Vietnam. We employ both qualitative and quantitative methods for processing data collected from twenty-two listed firms. The results reveal that determinant of corporate governance including the nationality of the board (NB), board composition (BC) has a negative relationship with financial performance; the remaining determinants, such as board size (BS), professional qualifications of the board (BE), the proportion of women (PW), the average age of the board (AA), general director concurrently of the board chairman (PO), do not influence financial performance. However, this impact level changes when we put some controlled variables in the model. In addition, the controlled variable of enterprise continuous uptime (COT) also has a negative impact on financial performance. Based on the findings, some recommendations are proposed relating to corporate governance for enhancing the financial performance of listed warehouse transportation firms in Vietnam

The agenda of researchers and practitioners within the hospitality and tourism sector has focused on the need and demand for sustainable practice. Following this situation, the Cipaku Garden Hotel, as a small-to-medium-sized hotel operating in Indonesia, follows the trend that has taken place and conducts sustainable practice as part of its business activities. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are to examine the sustainable practice conducted by the Cipaku Garden Hotel, uncover the management’s perception concerning the benefits of the applied sustainable practice, and analyze the outcome and influence generated by the implemented sustainable practice on the hotel’s financial performance. Through a case study approach, it is found that the Cipaku Garden Hotel applies its sustainable practice within the form of waste management activities. Within those activities, the hotel recycles organic waste into catfish food and compost. As a result, the hotel’s waste management activities have improved its cost-saving capabilities, and it is marked by the reduction of cost on catfish care up to 49% and garden maintenance around 50%. Profit-wise, the hotel’s sustainable practice has also increased its gross profit margin and net profit margin by 8% and 4%, respectively, compared to its previous year. Thus, the sustainable practice conducted by the Cipaku Garden Hotel brings a positive impact to its financial performance.
