Over the past 30 years, both banks of the Strait of Malacca have experienced rapid economic growth and urbanization. Because of the difficulties in obtaining multi-phase urban land information over a large tropical area, spatial-temporal evolution analysis of the urban land areas in this region has been restricted. In this study, we developed an object-oriented retro-updating method for the rapid extraction of multi-phase urban land information to conduct a comprehensive study of the urban land area changes and to investigate the regional differentiation of both banks of the Strait of Malacca from 1990 to 2018, using grid analysis, zoning statistics, and gradient-direction analysis. The results revealed that from 1990 to 2018, the urban land areas on the eastern and western banks of the Strait of Malacca had increased by 1.51 times and 1.76 times, respectively, and in 2018, the urban land areas on the eastern bank were approximately four times greater than those on the western bank. The urban land areas on the eastern bank exhibit clusters centered around large cities and small strips along roads. Furthermore, the development of the urban land on the western bank was slow. As of 2018, the low development intensity areas on the western bank accounted for 98.73% of the total area, with only Medan achieving a higher development intensity. The development speeds of both banks followed the same zonal law (i.e., decreasing with increasing distance from the coastline). In addition, the urban land areas on both banks were mainly distributed within 60 km of the coast. Over the past 30 years, in decreasing order of their expansion scales, the major ports on both banks of the strait are Port Kelang, the Port of Singapore, Malacca Port, Penang Port, Belawan Port, and Dumai Port. In addition to the Port of Singapore and Dumai Port, which are in leapfrog expansion mode, the other ports exhibit edge-expansion patterns. Finally, investigation of the factors influencing the intensity of the urban land development revealed that natural resource conditions, economic and industrial structures, port development, and government policies all have caused the development of the western bank to lag behind that of the eastern bank.

With the rapid economic growth and expansion of urban area in the past over thirty years in China, the land value increased rapidly in the process of land use conversion, which has aroused great social conflicts. Model of land value increment allocation is established based on the concept of land development right and applied in a case study about Guangzhou. It is concluded that according with the new approach of land value increment distribution based on LDR, special consideration for the function of social security of farmland, providing an new approach for the reform of land property right system and land compensation system reform. The article is aimed at determining trends in urbanization and globalization to take into account their influence in the process of managing the development of regions of Ukraine. It is defined that the level of urbanization in Ukraine over the past 30 years is high, while the regions of the country are significantly differentiated by the level of urbanization. The most urbanized are Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. The only region of Ukraine where the level of urbanization is being reduced is Zakarpattya region. Three regions of Ukraine - Ternopil, Chernihiv and Khmelnytsky are characterized by the most intensive urbanization processes, where the growth of urbanization is now almost ten times higher than the national average over the past 30 years. The research identified the main urbanization challenges, in particular: deepening the economic gap between cities and villages and between large cities and cities of region significance; economic development of the region determines the ability to unite and concentrate the creative capital; increase in inequality and segregation of the population; growth of the suburb crisis; unreasonable increase in house prices in cities to a level that is inaccessible to the majority of the population. The most significant globalization challenges include: increased global competition, growing regional differentiation and specialization; degradation of the real sector of the economy; significant increase in energy consumption; restricting access of a large part of the population to high-quality goods and services at reasonable prices; change of natural and climatic conditions for people’s life, strengthening ecological problems. The unreasonability of the widespread statement on the ineffectiveness of agglomerations and excessive absorption of resources is proven. Prospects for further research in this direction are the development of theoretical principles and the development of practical recommendations for improving the adoption of managerial decisions at the level of regional governance bodies, taking into account the challenges of globalization and urbanization.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the structure and changes of China’s land system. To achieve this aim, the paper is divided into four parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to the structural characteristics of the Chinese land institutional arrangements; the second part analyzes the reform process of the land system in the past 40 years and its path of change; the third part engages the discussion about the historic contribution made by the land institutional change to rapid economic growth and structural changes; and the final part is conclusion and some policy implications. Design/methodology/approach After 40 years of reforms and opening up, China has not only created a growth miracle unparalleled for any major country in human history, but also transformed itself from a rural to an urban society. Behind this great transformation is a systemic reform in land institutions. Rural land institutions went from collectively owned to household responsibility system, thereby protecting farmers’ land rights. This process resulted in long-term sustainable growth in China’s agriculture, a massive rural-urban migration and a historical agricultural transformation. The conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural uses and the introduction of market mechanisms made land a policy tool in driving high economic growth, industrialization and urbanization. Findings Research shows that the role of land and its relationship with the economy will inevitably change as China’s economy enters a new stage of medium-to-high speed growth. With economic restructuring, low-cost industrial land will be less effective. Urbanization is also shifting from rapid expansion to endogenous growth so that returns on land capitalization will decrease and risks will increase. Therefore, China must abandon land-dependent growth model through deepening land reforms and adapt a new pattern of economic development. Originality/value This paper gives a brief introduction to the structural characteristics of the Chinese land institutional arrangements, analyzes the reform process of the land system in the past 40 years and its path of change, and evaluates the historic contribution made by the land institutional change to rapid economic growth and structural changes.

En este artículo se analiza la evolución reciente de la segregación socioespacial y la de la conformación urbana en la ciudad de Salvador, a la luz del debate sobre las transformaciones de las metrópolis dentro del capital globalizado. Si bien se reconoce que todas las grandes ciudades terminan siendo alcanzadas por la globalización, en el texto se resalta, sin embargo, que los efectos de ese proceso no son uniformes ni convergen en un modelo único de ciudad. Es necesario considerar la conformación histórica de cada una de ellas, sus instituciones, actores y decisiones políticas locales dentro de una dinámica definida por la continuidad/transformación, donde lo que ya existía condiciona la irrupción de lo nuevo, que en muchos casos ya había comenzado a delinearse en el pasado. Mediante la demostración de la conformación de una metrópoli extremadamente desigual y segregada y la medida en que las transformaciones han agravado tales alteraciones al paso de los últimos años, esta revisión del caso de Salvador se propone exponer algunas reflexiones para entender mejor los efectos del proceso de globalización sobre las grandes ciudades de América Latina. AbstractThis article analyzes the recent evolution of the socio-spatial segregation and urban configuration of the city of Salvador, in light of the debate on the transformations of metropolises within globalized capital. Although it is a well-known fact that large cities end up being absorbed by globalization, the text stresses the fact that the effects of this process are not uniform nor do they converge in a single model of a city. It is essential to  consider the historical moment of each of them, their institutions, actors and local political decisions within a dynamic defined by continuity/transformation, in which what already existed conditions the emergence of what is new, which in many cases, had already begun to be shaped in the past. Through the demonstration of the configuration of an extremely unequal, segregated metropolis, and the extent to which the transformations have aggravated these alterations over the years, this review of the case of Salvador proposes offering some reflections to provide a better understanding of the effects of globalization on major Latin American cities.

As Korea's economic leeway has increased through rapid economic growth, the past simple consumption patterns for food, clothing, and shelter have changed from consumption patterns that invest for quality of life. This change in consumption has also affected the beauty industry, and competition in the beauty salon industry is getting fiercer day by day. Accordingly, it is judged that it is necessary to study the consumption propensity and behavior of customers visiting beauty salons in the current situation. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out whether consumption propensity affects consumption behavior by filling out a questionnaire targeting people in their 20s and 40s who have visited beauty salons. We want to provide the necessary basic data.

Services that link buyer and seller across nations and continents have long been a part of city and port development, but have not attracted much research interest, perhaps because they remain (like their statistical record) ‘invisible’. Technical and structural change in the organisation of shipping, reflected largely in containerisation, have changed the context for these services and they have responded in a variety of ways. Data in this paper trace the location of a selection of these services in the USA and Australia, indicating a separation between services and negotiations on aspects of trade services, and new patterns of physical activity in trade. It is suggested that this separation may be facilitated by the standardisation that has come with containerisation, the importance of intercorporate linkages, the role of official markets, and the application of modern communication technology. These aspects account for the clustering of services in large cities and their separation from day-to-day trade business, and could provide insights for producer-service location in general. The paper indicates the need for survey work to test these ideas.
