Green development is not only important for realizing a sustainable development strategy, but also a key approach for constructing an ecological civilization and transforming economic development. On the basis the development concept of a coordinated human–earth relationship and the paradigm of the process–pattern mechanism, this research adopted the drivers, pressures, state, impact, and response (DPSIR) model to build a green development level indicator system. The established indicator system is then applied to explore the spatial-temporal patterns and obstacles in the green development of 34 prefectural cities in Northeast China from 2008 to 2017 by the use of the entropy weight TOPSIS model, the obstacle model and the GIS spatial visualization method. There are three main findings. First, during the research period, the spatial evolution of the green development level of cities in Northeast China has gradually shifted from a small gap at an overall low level to a large gap at an overall high level; the spatial pattern of the green development level in these cities is characterized by a decrease from north to south and obvious spatial agglomeration effects. Second, specific findings in this research fail to indicate that the correlation between the economic development level and green development level of cities in Northeast China is entirely positive. That is, cities with higher economic development levels do not necessarily have higher green development levels, while some cities with lower economic development levels did present higher green development levels, which may be related to each region’s resources and environmental carrying capacity. Third, the mechanisms influencing spatial-temporal variation in the green development level of cities in Northeast China are not identical. Among them, resource endowment conditions, economic development status and government investment scale are playing a vital role in changes in the regional green development level, and they are also behind the diverse evolutionary characteristics presented in the different stages of regional green development. For the cities in Northeast China, in the process of promoting green development and to consolidate their existing green development level, efforts should be made to overcome inefficiencies in socioeconomic growth and to continuously enhance ecological protection and environmental governance. Moreover, it is essential to promote incremental increases in the green development level on the basis of the local conditions through the ingestion, absorption and combination of each city’s own characteristics with lessons from the successful experience of different types of cities. In the future, our research should fully consider the role of urbanization, industrial structure, population density, institutional mechanisms, environmental protection supervision, scientific and technological progress and other factors on the green development level in Northeast China and seek an important entry point to achieve regional human–earth coordination.

Regional green development can commendably abide by the theory of dissipative structure. The relative dissipative characteristics taken on by regional development are analyzed, in which the energy factors and resources factors are incorporated into the green economic development and green environment support subsystems (2GE system) in line with the definite input characteristics. A more representative indicator system is established, with positive and negative entropy indexes involved. As Brusselator model and information entropy method are employed to calculate the data of 30 China’s provinces from 2008 to 2015, the findings bespeak that green development in China lays particular stress on green economic development assuming higher environment pressure and cost. The development among various regions is getting progressively and evidently different, which is manifested as potent economic base and abundant natural resources in the Eastern China; the backward green economic development and the progress of green environment in Central China; the pursuit of green economic development at the expense of the green environment in Western China and Northeastern China.

How to estimate regional economic development level is important for solving regional inequality problems. Most of previous studies on regional economic development are based on the statistics collected typically in administrative units. This paper has analyzed the defects of traditional studies, and attempted to research regional economic development problems with 10-year DMSP/OLS nighttime light satellite imagery as a new data source. For exploring the relationship between DMSP/OLS nighttime light data and GDP, different types of curve fitting regression models have been tried, the Cubic model has shown the best performance with a coefficient of determination (R2) equal to 0.803. Based on this positive correlation, we have estimated provincial economic development level of China using DMSP/OLS nighttime light data. The research results have indicated that the DMSP/OLS nighttime light data can well reveal provincial economic development levels.

This study aimed to measure the efficiency and change in efficiency over time of township hospitals among Chinese provinces, to decompose the difference in efficiency between districts, and to study the correlations between the difference in efficiency and its determinants. Based on Chinese provincial panel data, the empirical analysis was established using data envelopment analysis (DEA), Malmquist index, Theil index decomposition method and Grey correlation analysis method. First, it was found that the township hospitals in most provinces were operating in an inefficient state, and the township hospitals in most provinces achieved gains in efficiency. Second, from 2003 to 2016 the shrinkage of the difference in provincial efficiency of township hospitals progressed slowly. Intra-regional difference is the main cause of the overall provincial efficiency difference of Chinese township hospitals, while inter-regional difference is the minor cause of the overall difference. Third, the correlation between the difference of overall provincial efficiency and the difference of economic development level is the highest among all the correlations, while other determinants rank second to seventh place in their degree of correlation with respect to the overall difference in provincial efficiency. Furthermore, the correlations between the intra-regional difference of provincial efficiency of Chinese township hospitals and its determinants vary tremendously across regions. Based on our findings, we can conclude, first, that efforts should be made to improve the overall provincial difference in efficiency of Chinese township hospitals, and enhance the utilization level of input resources, and to reduce resource waste. Second, in order to shrink the overall provincial efficiency of Chinese township hospitals, the most important measure that should be taken is to improve the economic development level in relatively backward provinces in order to lay a solid economic foundation for the improvement of efficiency and shrink the differences in efficiency between provinces. Third, more attention should be paid to the shrinkage of intra-regional efficiency differences in Chinese township hospitals, while the narrowing of inter-regional efficiency difference should not be ignored. For each region, it is necessary to recognize the difference in the relative importance of determinants, and to make development strategies according to local conditions so as to make full use of local characteristics and advantages.

The economic growth of Inner Mongolia has ranked first for several years since Western Development. In this paper, we establish a level indicator system for evaluating the level of Regional Economic Development from the following four aspects: economic scale, economic benefit, economic structure and quality of life. Then, we take the data of 2000 as sample data, and apply it to a DEA model based on panel data for evaluating the economic development of the twelve union cities from 2000 to 2009.By the analysis, Inner Mongolia's economic development can be divided into two levels: Erdos , Baotou, Hohhot, Alashan League and Wuhai have a higher level of economic development, Xilinguole League, Hulunbeier, Bayannaoer, Wulanchabu, Chifeng, Tongliao and Xingan League have a poor foundation , the overall development is not ideal.

Abstract In this paper, the definition of Water-energy-food system risk (WEF-R) was firstly defined based on stability, coordination and sustainability. Set pair analysis and risk matrix were applied to assess the spatio-temporal dynamics of WEF-R in China from 2008 to 2017. The research results showed that stability subsystem had the greatest influence on the WEF-R, and sustainability subsystem was an important factor affecting the WEF-R. According to the spatial-temporal analysis, the risk levels of coordination and sustainable subsystems showed a gradual downward trend, while that of stability subsystem showed small fluctuations from 2008 to 2017. In terms of the WEF-R level, it presented a decreasing trend of small fluctuations. In addition, the higher-risk areas of stability subsystem and lower-risk areas of sustainability subsystem, which were mainly centralized in southeast coastal and central regions, were consistent with the areas of good economic development level and high level of urbanization. While the lower-risk areas of stability subsystem and higher-risk areas of sustainability subsystem, which were mainly centralized in the northwest regions, brought into correspondence with the areas of good resource endowment but lower levels of economic development. Therefore, the spatial differences of economic development level and resource endowment were the main factors affecting the spatial pattern of the WEF-R level in China. Therefore, policy makers should focus on WEF-R and implement measures to improve the sustainable development of WEF nexus.

Does green image impact enterprise environmental protection investment? How does the green image affect enterprise environmental protection investment? In order to solve the above problems, this paper uses an empirical analysis to explore the relationship among regional economic development level, green image, and enterprise environmental protection investment based on the empirical data of A-share manufacturing listed companies from 2007 to 2015 in China. The research results show that good green image has a positive role to promote enterprise environmental protection investment, and regional economic development level partially mediates green image and enterprise environmental protection investment. The article confirms that a good green image can send positive signals to stakeholders and increase their loyalty and satisfaction with the enterprise’s products or services. The level of regional economic development provides opportunities for the green development of enterprises. With the improvement in the level of regional economic development, stakeholders’ awareness of environmental protection has increased, and they have become more sensitive to enterprise environmental protection investment behaviors. The research results also show that the environmental awareness of corporate stakeholders plays an important role in actively fulfilling, and it provides new ideas for companies to conduct production and management in a green-oriented model.

The street network is considered the skeleton of the city structure; it determines the efficiency and productivity of the city in that it acts like blood vessels transporting people, goods, and information. The relationship between street networks and economic development is an important research topic in urban geography. In recent years, complex network theory has been successfully used for understanding the characteristics of street network structure. However, researchers lack an analytical framework and methods for studying the relationship between the morphological structure of urban streets and the economic development level of cities. Accordingly, this paper proposes a methodological framework for first, quantitatively characterizing the urban morphological structure based on open street network data, and second, exploring the relationship between the morphological structure of the urban street and the urban economic development level. The proposed methodology was applied to 31 provincial capital cities in China. The results indicate that urban morphological structure can be quantitatively described by betweenness and closeness centrality extracted from street networks. Cities with similar structures have similar levels of economic development. Moreover, the results suggest a significant positive correlation between street network betweenness centrality Gini coefficients and cities’ economic development levels, indicating that the street network may affect city productivity. This study makes two major contributions to the scholarly literature. Methodologically, the proposed framework provides technical and methodological support for a better understanding of the relationship between cities’ economic development and urban street structure. Empirically, the demonstrated case study may guide decision-making involving regional development and the optimization of urban space.

Through the use of 30 provincial panel datasets covering the years from 2013 to 2017, on the basis of constructing the regional green development indicator system, this paper used the fixed-base range entropy weight method to measure the regional green development level. The difference-in-differences model was used to test the policy effect, the mechanism of the establishment of the green financial reform, and the innovation pilot zone on green development. The results showed that: (1) the establishment of the pilot zone promotes regional green development and shows regional differences; (2) under the guidance of policies, the provinces that set up the pilot zone affect the level of regional green development mainly through the upgrading of industrial structure and technological innovation; further research has found (3) a high level of financial investment in environmental protection and marketization, which will help the pilot zone to further play a positive role in promoting the green development of the region. The results of this article indicated that China should continue to expand the scope of green finance reform and innovation pilot zones and make reasonable arrangements among regions according to local conditions to explore new ways of promoting green development. At the same time, the government should actively play the role of green finance in the pilot zone to promote industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation and guide market players to establish green development concepts to gradually build an environmentally friendly, circular model economy to enhance the overall green development capacity of the region.

In order to study the spatial pattern of the urbanization level and economic development and their relationships in Shandong peninsula urban agglomeration, principal component analysis (PCA) were used to calculate the comprehensive development level of urbanization and economic development, and GIS were used to analyze their spatial pattern. The research results showed that the urbanization and economic development levels have high correlation in Shandong peninsula urban agglomeration; the urbanization levels of all cities in Shandong peninsula urban agglomerations will continue to improve, but the urbanization speed is becoming slow. We get two enlightenments from the results: The current advance of urbanization in some areas of Shandong peninsula urban agglomeration phenomenon is worth of attention and vigilance; and the cause of the low level of urbanization is a relatively low level of economic development.
