Quality of life and nutritional status of cancer patients on chemotherapy

Background: Cancer is the second cause of disease-related deaths worldwide. Malnutrition among cancer patients is very common, with an estimated incidence of approximately 40 to 80%. While it is already a proven fact that malnutrition is prevalent among cancer patients, its impact on the quality of life of patients has not been adequately studied, particularly in the local setting. Purpose: To assess quality of life, nutrition status and to determine the affects of nutrition status on quality of life of cancer patients treated chemotherapy at Oncology Department, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Methods: A cross sectional study with 70 cancer patients admitted for chemotherapy recruited from at oncology department, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during March to September 2018. The EORTC QLQ-C30 were used to assess quality of life and Subjective Global Assessment scale were used to assess nutrition status. T-test, ANOVA, Mann Whitney, Kruskal Wallis were used to determine the correlation between 2 factors. Pearson and Spearman Coefficient were used to measure the strength of relationship between the factors. Results: Patient’s mean age was 58.93 ± 13.26, males were 61.3%. There were 67.14% patients with SGA A, 14.29% were classified SGA-B (moderately malnourished) and 18.57% were classified SGA C (severely malnourished). The global health scale, the functional scales were in the limit of the EORTC reference value, meanwhile the toxicities -related symptom scales were worse than the EORTC reference value. Patients were statistically different across the Subjective Global Assessment groups according to emotional (p < 0.05), and cognitive functioning (p < 0.05) nausea and vomiting (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that there were the effects of nutrition status on quality of life in patients treated chemotherapy. ABSTRACTCancer is related to a deterioration of nutritional status and quality of life (Qol), but the extent of these conditions in patients with breast cancer has not been studied well. Malnutrition is prevalent among cancer patients and maybe correlated with altered quality of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of QoL and nutritional status after breast cancer diagnosed. Nutritional status was evaluated with Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment and QoL using Short form 36 (SF-36) and also with the specific module for breast cancer patients. A consecutive sampleof twenty two patients diagnosed with breast cancer was evaluated. The associations of QoL with stadium and nutrition status were evaluated using T-test analysis. The mean of body mass index was 21.3 kg/m2. Fifty percent patient have menopause. Most patients were stage II (77.3%), the others stage III (18.2%) and stage I (4.5%). Sixty eight point two percent had risk of malnutrition. The stadium of tumor was significantly related to physical functioning (p < 0.000), physical limitation (p < 0.024), emotional limitation (p < 0.013), well-being (p < 0.020), health changes (p < 0.010). Thestatus of nutrition was significantly related to physical functioning (p < 0.001), loss of energy (p < 0.010) and general health (p <0.005). For Conclusion, the status of nutrition breast cancer patients were related to QoL especially physical functioning, loss of energy and general health after they were diagnosed.ABSTRAKKanker sangat terkait dengan perburukan status nutrisi dan kualitas hidup. Namun demikian, belum banyak studi yang yang melaporkan masalah nutrisi dan kulitas hidup pada kanker payudara. Malnutrisi sering ditemukan pada kanker dan mungkin terkait dengan perubahan kulaitas hidup. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi hubungan antara kualitas hidup dengan status nutrisi setelah kanker payudara terdiagnosis. Evaluasi status nutrisi dilakukan dengan Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment dan kualitas hidup dengan Short form 36 (SF-36) sertakarakteristik pada kanker payudara. Sampel diambil dengan teknik konsekutif terhadap 22 pasien yang terdiagnosis kanker payudara. Hubungan kualitas hidup dengan stadium kanker dan status nutrisi dinilai menggunakan analisis T-test. Indeks massa tubuh rata-rata adalah 21,3 kg/m2. Lima puluh pasien telah menopause. Terbanyak adalah stadium 2 (77,3%), stadium 3 (18,2%), dan stadium 1 (4,5%). Enam puluh dua koma dua persen berisiko malnutrisi. Stadium tumor secara bermakna berhubungan dengan fungsi fisik (p <0,000), keterbatasan fisik (p<0,024), keterbatasan emosi(p<0,013), rasa nyaman (p<0,020), dan perubahan kesehatan (p<0,000). Status nutrisi berhubungan secara bermakna dengan fungsi fisik (p<0,001), kehilangan energi (p<0,010), dan kesehatan secara umum (p<0,005). Simpulan, status nutrisi pasien kanker payudara berhubungan dengan kualitas hidup, terutama fungsi fisik, kehilangan energi, status kesehatan umum setelah mereka terdiagnosis.

e15508 Background: The incidence of gastric cancer is much higher in China than in any other country. Although the overall survival rate of patients with gastric cancer has increased due to the advancements in multimodality management. However, significant morbidity, including loss of appetite, dysphagia, nausea, and vomiting is still associated with gastric cancer patients. These symptoms have a profound impact on nutritional status and quality of life in these patients. The primary objective of the present study was to assess the nutritional status and quality of life in gastric cancer patients. Methods: A preliminary assessment of patients’ nutritional status, quality of life, and medical characteristics was conducted using the Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life (QOL-C30, version 3) questionnaires. The PG-SGA is a clinical nutrition assessment tool used to evaluate oncology patients. The nutritional status of the patients fell into three groups by a score of PG-SGA-A, -B, and C. Abstract Introduction A retrospective clinical study was performed to identify the characteristics of patients with lung cancer treated with integrative cancer treatment in addition to conventional medicine. Materials and Methods We reviewed medical records for lung cancer patients who visited a single integrative setting in Rome, Italy. A total of 57 patients were included, and the majority had advanced-stage cancer. All of them underwent integrative therapy with nutrition and phytotherapy indications. The diet was designed to reduce most of possible factors promoting cancer proliferation, inflammation, and obesity. Foods with anti-inflammatory, prebiotic, antioxidant, and anticancer properties had been chosen. Herbal supplements with known effects on lung cancer were prescribed. In particular, astragal, apigenine, fucosterol, polydatin, epigallocatechin gallate, cannabis, curcumin, and inositol were used. Furthermore, medical mushrooms and other substances were used to improve the immune system and to reduce chemotherapy side effects. Five key parameters have been evaluated for 2 years starting at the first surgery: nutritional status, immune status, discontinuation of therapy, quality of life, and prognosis of the disease. Results A relevant improvement in parameters relative to nutritional status, immune status, and quality of life has been observed after integrative therapy compared with the same parameters at the first medical visit before starting such approach. Conclusion The results suggest that integrative therapy may have benefits in patients with lung cancer. Even though there are limitations, the study suggests that integrative therapy could improve nutritional status and quality of life, with possible positive effect on overall survival.

(1) Background: Malnutrition in cancer patients impacts quality of life (QoL) and performance status (PS). When oral/enteral nutrition is not possible and patients develop intestinal failure, parenteral nutrition (PN) is indicated. Our aim was to assess nutritional status, QoL, and PS in hospitalised cancer patients recently initiated on PN for intestinal failure. (2) Methods: The design was a cross-sectional observational study. The following information was captured: demographic, anthropometric, biochemical and medical information, as well as nutritional screening tool (NST), patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA), functional assessment of cancer therapy-general (FACT-G), and Karnofsky PS (KPS) data. (3) Results: Among 85 PN referrals, 30 oncology patients (56.2 years, 56.7% male) were identified. Mean weight (60.3 ± 16.6 kg) corresponded to normal body mass index values (21.0 ± 5.1 kg/m2). However, weight loss was significant in patients with gastrointestinal tumours (p < 0.01). A high malnutrition risk was present in 53.3–56.7% of patients, depending on the screening tool. Patients had impaired QoL (FACT-G: 26.6 ± 9.8) but PS indicated above average capability with independent daily activities (KPS: 60 ± 10). (4) Conclusions: Future research should assess the impact of impaired NS and QoL on clinical outcomes such as survival, with a view to encompassing nutritional and QoL assessment in the management pathway of this patient group.
