This is a literature review about the main etiological factors of non-carious cervical lesions (LCNCs), considering their multifactorial aspects and their increasing prevalence in the population. National and international journals were consulted in the databases (Virtual Health Library, Pubmed and Google Academic), as well as theses and books related to the theme. Articles published from 2010 to 2019 were selected according to the inclusion / exclusion criteria. LCNCs are characterized by dental mineral loss in the cervical region, without bacterial involvement, varying in shape, symmetry and location. These lesions have been growing around 5 to 85%, which highlights the importance of the present study. Biocorrosion, abrasion and abfraction are considered the main etiological factors, and a common patients complaint is dentin hypersensitivity. Curiously, risk groups have been related to LCNCs such as sports athletes, post-orthodontic individuals, and gastroesophageal disease patients. Thus, it is concluded that the knowledge of the etiological factors is essential to guide an adequate diagnosis and then to the correct therapeutic management.

ABSTRACT Dentinal hypersensitivity is a common painful condition of the teeth, associated with the exposure of the dentin to external environment of the mouth. However, little is known about the etiology and predisposing factors, which can compromise management. The aim of this paper is to summarize existing information about epidemiology, mechanisms, etiology, differential diagnosis and treatment. Clinical relevance A better understanding of the etiology and factors involved in dentin hypersensitivity will help the management of the hypersensitivity teeth. In today’s time tooth/teeth whitening has become the most common requested procedure from the clinician. As per the increasing demand by the patient for whiter teeth, there are various home based products are available like gels, tooth pastes and some other products are also available that can be applied by the dentist and it contains high amount of bleaching agent with in it. Some of the aware risk of tooth whitening procedure was also known such as, sensitivity of the tooth, irritation of the gingiva, demineralization of the tooth surface along with roughening of the superficial layer of the tooth.

Aim: The present study aimed to carry out a literature review about biocorrosion as an etiological factor of non-carious lesions and dentin hypersensitivity. Method: The bibliographic search was performed in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL)databases, selecting articles published from 2015 to 2020, available in full text, in Portuguese and English, and related to the proposed theme. Results: In the studies included, it was observed that substances with low pH, high titratable acidity, some lifestyles, and occupational habits are factors that can directly interfere with dental demineralization. As a consequence of this process, non-carious lesions and dental hypersensitivity have increased their incidence. Conclusion: The main sources of acids that attack dental structure are food and beverages and endogenous acids of gastric content. Thus, it must be considered themultifactorial character of this process and the association with other etiological factors, such as tension and friction in the development of non-carious lesions, aiming to restore oral health to the patient.

Objective: The purpose in this study was to analyze in the literature whether toothbrushing with charcoal-based products promotes a whitening effect. Methodology: An integrative literature review was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE database, which had as its guiding question: Does brushing with activated charcoal-based products have a whitening effect on the tooth? The search strategy was performed through the use of terms (charcoal AND “dentifrice OR toothpaste OR toothbrushing” AND “bleaching OR whitening” AND tooth), and only articles published in English in any period were included. Result: From a total of 34 scientific articles identified, 6 articles were included in the study, between the years 2019 and 2021. According to the evidence, three articles did not observe an advantage in performing brushing with activated charcoal-based products and another three observed a slight whitening effect, generally inferior when compared to other whitening agents. In addition, most articles recommend attention to the use of these products for oral hygiene containing charcoal, since many of these studies observed an increase on the roughness of tooth enamel, which is directly related to the inherent abrasiveness of each product and which depends on the source and the methods used to prepare and mill charcoal. Conclusion: From the studies analyzed so far, it is observed that brushing products based on activated charcoal have few effectiveness of tooth whitening, often lower when compared to other abrasive agents present in whitening dentifrices.
