Tugas Akhir ini berjudul Perancangan Typeface Berdasarkan Motif Ukiran Minangkabau Pucuak Rabuang. Perancangan ini dilatar belakangi karena kurangnya pengetahuan masyarakat terhadap motif ukiran yang ada di Minangkabau salah satunya adalah motif pucuak rabuang. Data yang digunakan pada perancangan ini adalah data verbal, data visual, data yang diperoleh melaluiobservasi, dokumentasi motif ukiran pucuak rabuang yang kemudian dianilisa dengan teori SWOT. Data diproduksi melalui proses manual dan digital dengan studi ikonik demi menampilkan citra motif ukiran pucuak rabuang. Berlandaskan ide dan pandangan kreatif, perancangan ini mencoba menggugah masyarakat agar tidak melupakan warisan budaya Minangkabau salah satunya motif ukiran pucuak rabuang. Melalui tipografi para desainer muda berpeluang menemukan celah baru dalam dunia desain dan tipografi. Melalui motif pucuak rabuang masyarakat diharapkan bisa menjaga warisan budaya serta mengambilnilai-nilai dan pesan yang terkandung didalamnya. Perancangan ini diharapkan dapat menambah khazanah keilmuan DesainKomunikasi Visual khususnya tipografi dan menegaskan kemampuan ilmu DKV sebagai media yang melestarikan warisan budaya nusantara khususnya motif pucuak rabuan.

The problem addressed in this case study stemmed from recognition of qualitative researchers’ desire to triangulate findings with two or more data sources. In this study, I describe the process of using visual data to verify, contradict, or enhance verbal data using a soft systems methodology tool called rich pictures. To date, the process of comparing verbal data and visual data has not been well explored. I use secondary data from a Ph.D. study about faculty members’ perceptions of academic quality to compare two data sources: participants’ verbal definitions of academic quality and participants’ verbal descriptions of rich pictures representing their visual conceptions of academic quality. Three rich picture examples illustrate the varying degrees to which rich picture descriptions may align with verbal definitions. Some participants’ rich picture descriptions were partially or completely consistent with their initial definitions of the phenomenon under study. However, in most cases, participants’ descriptions of their rich pictures added new data to their initial definitions of academic quality, thus generating new insights. I recommend asking participants to describe their rich pictures in their own words, thereby facilitating a direct comparison of participants’ verbal and visual data.


The existence of decorative elements in traditional Malay houses represents the integration between functionalism and aesthetics of architecture. Its ornamentation, form and pattern particularly in woodcarving and bamboo weaving reflect the uniqueness of local craftsmanship and the master carvers. Defined as non-structural and “additional” member of the building there are at least 15 (fifteen) decorative elements of the traditional Malay house that have been identified by previous researcher. There are Tunjuk Langit, Sisik Naga, Sulur Bayung, Ande-Ande, Pemeleh, Kepala Cicak, Tiang Gantung, Lebah Bergantung, Kekisi, Gerbang, Gerbang Pintu Sesiku Keluang, Pagar Musang, Kepala Pintu and Kepala Tingkap. Architecturally in Malaysia traditional houses were categorised based on roof design, spatial organization and geographical setting which finally this categorization were named after the states. Every traditional house in the state of Malaysia signifying particular style and architectural characteristics of that particular state. This article discusses the study of those decorative elements on the traditional Malay houses in the state of Perak known as Rumah Limas Bumbung Perak (RLBP). With the objective is to investigate the type, terms and characteristics of decorative elements site observations were done on selected thirty (30) RLBP houses located along Sungai Perak. Sungai Perak is the second longest river in peninsula Malaysia recognised as the site of early Malay settlement in Perak. The analysis on visual data and verbal data were carried out to established architectural terminology and typology based on form and style of every decorative element. The study found that nine (9) decorative elements come to be the major characteristics of RLBP; some with different name, form and style from other states. These similarity and dissimilarity contributes to the enrichment of the aesthetical theory and philosophy of the Malay traditional house in Malaysia.

This study, entitled Designing a Pop Up Book about the Struggle of the Women's Warrior Siti Manggopoh, discusses the history of a woman's heroism in leading the struggle against Dutch colonialism, which at that time implemented a money tax policy (belasting). The uprising occurred on June 15, 1908. The Manggopoh People's Struggle Movement led by Siti Manggopoh was able to influence other people so that they joined forces against the Dutch and the Manggopoh War broke out which the Dutch East Indies government could not forget. The history of the nation will be lost if it is not preserved. It takes various forms of effort and media design to introduce the history of the female warrior Siti Manggopoh to the people of West Sumatra in particular and Indonesia in general. The author wants to design an effective media in the form of a Pop Up Book, so that the younger generation is now interested in history which at this time is only focused on text books. The data used in this design are verbal data, visual data and data obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation which were analyzed by SWOT analysis.

This study compared individuals with pairs in a scientific problem-solving task. Participants interacted with a virtual psychological laboratory called Virtue to reason about a visual search theory. To this end, they created hypotheses, designed experiments, and analyzed and interpreted the results of their experiments in order to discover which of five possible factors affected the visual search process. Before and after their interaction with Virtue, participants took a test measuring theoretical and methodological knowledge. In addition, process data reflecting participants’ experimental activities and verbal data were collected. The results showed a significant but equal increase in knowledge for both groups. We found differences between individuals and pairs in the evaluation of hypotheses in the process data, and in descriptive and explanatory statements in the verbal data. Interacting with Virtue helped all students improve their domain-specific and domain-general psychological knowledge.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini membahas tubuh dan seksualitas perempuan dalam iklan ResikV dan Sumber Ayu. Iklan yang diteliti adalah Resik V Khasiat Manjakani versi InnekeKhoeserawati dan Sumber Ayu Sabun Daun Sirih versi Dian Nitami. Penelitian inimenggunakan pendekatan semiotika, dengan mengkaji tanda-tanda pada iklan di dalamdata tekstual maupun visual baik secara denotatif dan konotatif. Tujuan penelitian iniadalah untuk memperoleh gambaran mengenai tubuh dan seksualitas perempuan didalam iklan. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa genitalia perempuan ditempatkan sebagairepresentasi keseluruhan diri perempuan. Penggambaran seksualitas perempuan didalam iklan menunjukkan beberapa kecenderungan yaitu perempuan sebagai penjagakeharmonisan rumah tangga, sebagai penjamin terpenuhinya hasrat seksual laki-laki,serta adanya tuntutan bagi perempuan untuk mempertahankan kemudaan tubuh danseksualitasnya. Kedua iklan juga mengerucutkan perempuan pada fungsinya sebagaiistri yang mengurusi suami serta pada fungsi domestik sebagai pengurus rumah tangga.Kata Kunci: iklan, perempuan, seksualitas, semiotika, tubuhABSTRACTThis research discusses body and sexuality of woman in Resik V and Sumber Ayuadvertising. Spesifically, the ads discussed here are Resik V Khasiat Manjakani in InnekeKoesherawati’s version and Sumber Ayu Sabun Daun Sirih in Dian Nitami’s version. This researchapplies semiotic approach in which the signs in textual and visual data are examined in thedennotatif and connotatif order. The aim of this research is that to find out how women’s bodyand sexuality are represented in Resik V and Sumber Ayu. This research shows that woman’sgenital organ is positioned as the representation of the whole woman’s Self. The description ofwomen’s sexuality in both advertisings points out several tendencies which are as follows. Firstly,woman is positioned as a person who is responsible to keep the marriage in harmony. Secondly,woman is pictured as person who guarrantees the fulfilment of man’s sexual desire. Thirdly, theads indicate a demand on woman to keep their body and sexuality young and fresh. It can also besaid that both Resik V and Sumber Ayu narrow the function of woman as wife who is in chargein serving their husband well and focus to highlight the domestic function of woman.Keywords: advertising, body, semiotics, sexuality, woman

The main methods for detecting features and edges associated with these approaches are presented. A brief description of modern edge detection and classification algorithms suitable for isolating and characterizing the type of pathology in the lungs in medical images is also given.
